Hi everyone, I'm hoping some of you can help me. I'm trying to decide on what name to go by so that I can make my own mer Fb page once I finally get my silicone tail (!!!). I'm actually still debating whether or not to just use my real name, or pick an alias. I like my real name (Caitlin), even though it's not very mermaidy, and I've never really been a fan of nicknames so it would feel weird learning to answer to anything other than Caitlin. But I don't know if it's the best thing to use as a mermaid name, so I've been thinking up alternatives to see if I like anything enough to use it. I don't want it to sound cheesy....and I tend to like Greek mythology names as I've always loved Greek mythology, but it doesn't have to be derived from that.

First, I thought maybe Catalina, because it's similar enough to my real name and it's what I used to go by in Spanish class. But then I thought maybe everyone would think I was from California (Catalina Island).

I also thought of Athena, because she was always my favorite Greek goddess and I really like the name. But I'm still not sure.

Also, my preferred online handle, Theobromine....is my favorite molecule but doesn't sound very mermaidly :P

Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks :)

Oh, and my other idea was to maybe find something science-related, such as the genus or species name of a cool fish, because I am a nerd like that :P

You have the same name as me. :) Sometimes my sister called me Catalina. I am actually thinking of changing my name to Sirenessa instead of mermaid serinessa, because I like singing. Anyways, I think you should chose the genus or name of a fish, because it's unique. Athena also sounds really pretty. Anything you want really. :)

Thanks everyone! A couple other Greek names I just remembered I always really liked are Ariadne and Andromeda (which is cool cuz it's also a galaxy). However, I remember that my younger self definitely had a flair for the dramatic, so I don't know if those names would be a little....too much?

Fish names I thought of off the top of my head were Auriga (i.e. Chaetodon auriga, threadfin butterfly) and Loreto (Gramma loreto, royal gramma). Thanks for that link thought, Comatose Angel. I also was flipping through my tropical fish ID book a little.

So hard to narrow it down! What does everyone think sounds best? I'm just curious which one stands out to the most people...

Ariadne

I chose Ariadne just because I liked the sound, and it starts with the same letter as my real name...although in mythology, it has nothing to do with the sea and everything to do with the earth! lol...so I think anything you think sounds beautiful and flowy (whether or not it has a "fishy" sound to it) will work for you. What do you respond to inside when you say it out loud?

Curses! I guess I can't use Ariadne then. Oh well, there are plenty of other good ones, and I have time to ponder.

You can check out babynamesworld.com, and put whatever search parameters you like... That's how I came up with Salina

I've been struggling to choose a name for months myself, haha! I've looked at hundreds of websites, played around with letters like crazy. I think I've just got too many specifications for them. :P

Name should be unique and important which you can easily use in future. choose the best one which you can easily remember.

Yes, it will have to be something I can easily.identify with. I've been conferring with my best friend about names ans especially fish-related ones. She's been looking up some for me as I only have my phone at the moment. I told her I tend to identify most with names that start with C, so she suggested Carcharias because she knows I love sharks. I like it and I suggested modifying it to Carcharia to sound more like a name, but my husband thought it might be too hard to pronounce. Sadly I think he might be right. Then I thought maybe Cyanea, which just means blue. My tail is blue so I thought it would fit, and it's pretty. What do all you mers think?

Cyanea sounds like a really pretty name! You could even play with the letters and make something new from it if you're not totally satisfied.

Thanks! I do really like Cyanea, and it's also a fish name (Chrysiptera cyanea). I will have to try it on for size but so far I really like it.
