I don't have the talent for it, but just had the pretty cool idea of taking a doll, say a barbie doll, taking off her legs and making a sculpt of a tail for her, then casting it in silicone and attaching it to the doll. Would make for a cool little thing for kids, or even custom doll collectors. I know I always wished for a decent mermaid doll when I was a kid. I dunno, just thought I'd throw it out there in case someone has some left over silicone and free time.

He doesn't use silicone, but it's still really cool. I just think when a girl played with it in the water, having a doll with a silicone tail would get better movement. :)

I'd like to see one of those really large dolls turned into a mermaid :0 what are they called.. Ball point dolls?

I began to make reborn baby as an other hobby and for my second baby I want to make a mermaid one. I do not like the 'Barbie' mermaid dolls or other mermaid dolls alike.

Ball-Jointed dalls, MermaidAndrea. :) You thought would be so pretty! There's some people that make mermaid ones, but I like the idea of having one from silicone because of how much I would've liked something like that as a kid. A reborn baby mermaid doll would be super cool. I only said barbie, because I didn't like my barbie mermaid dolls as a kid.

Some ball jointed dolls actually come as mermaids already.
Though I don't think anyone will mod one with a silicone tail because it needs to be able to house joints and hold its pose when posed.

Do you know if there are any dolls with leg joints more suited for a mermaid tail? Like multi segmented trunk that can bend more appropriately?

Here you cans see my BJD's (Ball Joint Dolls) (and commisions) in there (fabric) tails that I made ;)

That's gorgeous <3

Is there a reason none of these dolls have a rubber outer skin to hide the tail joints, like similar to our silicone tails? are the joints considered part of the aesthetic? Not that I dont like them the way they are, I'm just curious if this is a thing that anyone's done.

I didn't get many pics because there were a lot of people there, but here are the good ones:

I don't recommend getting these dolls wet, cause you have to dry them out. The upside is, they look pretty funny when you do:

I plan to do this again, it was fun. There were two little girls talking to me the whole time! They were so cute xD I told them that Melody was a 'mermaid model' and they were so excited. I love children.

It's part of the aesthetic I suppose. The joints are also what give the dolls their ability to pose in so many unique ways that you can't get with, say, and American Girl doll or a barbie, and they hold the poses (mostly) better than fabric dolls like Groovy Girls.

I don't care about posing, all of those dolls are for adults and collectors. I would want something for kids, that could actually be played with. :) I'd totally give one to my neice.

I think you could buy one for a barbie, especially because they have the pointed toes and are all pretty much the same shape. They're also small, so less silicone is required. I bet your niece would love playing 'Ariel' with it, taking off the tail to meet a prince. It's what I would have done!

lol i meant a permantly attached to the doll silicone tail. I always hated when I was and kid and the tail was either jointed plastic, or a cloth one. Maybe I'm just dreaming and there's no real interest in this, but I know if there'd been a doll when I was a kid with a fully non removable silicone style tail, it would've been the only doll I'd played with

My friend has a gorgeous pair of the Asleep Eidolon merdolls (Sachiel and Lorelei, which I am forever jealous of). Honestly they have the best tail engineering of any mermaid bjd I've seen, they pose well and the scales flow very naturally. I've been working on some cloth tails made of snakeskin scaled fabric for some of my dolls, just as a sort of practice in patterning for my own tail.

Does anyone remember the flappy-tail Barbies from about ten years ago? I had one as a teen, she long bright orange hair and a blue silicone tail that flapped when you squeezed her hips. The tails were pretty nice looking if I remember. I think I had every mermaid Barbie made from 1990 up until 2005 or so at one point, haha.

Edit: Oh I found her! It was the Mermaid Fantasy dolls, I had Kayla! http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_WAtV0jklj24/S7Ygu2DdtEI/AAAAAAAABzk/5aDKBRafeDo/s1600/Kayla+Mermaid+Fantasy.JPG Wish I still had her, so pretty!

Oh I love the purple one! Though the yellow one has a really pretty fluke shape. I always liked these more than the normal mermaids because their tails were so realistic. Sounds silly but I used to sneak out to my pool with mine to play with her underwater, even though I was already like 14 when I got her. Used to take my pirate ships out too but they tended to sink, haha.

XD I had no idea this thread was here... I'm going to be producing custom bjd doll tails to raise money for my first full size tail.

I'm making the first one for my friend karla-chan who has a mini-fee(sp?) which is apparently the most popular bjd type, and it's looking like my first commission will be for a huge male bjd. The tails will be simplistic to start - mini versions of my basic designs, with coloured silicone with a paint job. I'll even be offering extra fins for an extra fee. At first obviously the tails will be more readily available for those two dolls as the moulds will be ready and waiting, but I will be able to make tails for any size doll from measurements. They will work just like a tail works on a human - they will be removable so you basically have a mermaid doll and a regular doll depending on your mood and the dolls will be able to be posed in the tails (might need restringing slightly differently, we still need to experiment once we have karla's doll-tail made.

We're also going to experiement with 'doll prosthetics' which can safely (and non-permanently) be attached with pva glue. Such as elven ears, gills, extra fins etc.

It's looking like they will at first be sold via a kickstarter page. I should be making them/selling them by the spring at the latest.

Let me know if you guys would be interested xx

Kat if you need extra measurements for different dolls I can possibly help. My bf and I have around 30 dolls all together including almost all the most popular types, from 70cm down to Puki. I think the only sizes we don't really have yet are the Littlefee and Pukifee.

No problem! Its always good to have someone who knows what measurements you need too so figured I'd help out. I know when I tried to make tails for dolls I needed really funny measurements on the legs to get it well fitted.

I actually didn't really pay attention to this thread until today. My niece knows I have a tail and is now obsessed with mermaids. I don't like any of the existing mermaid dolls, and so I'm modifying an already existing doll by adding a tail. I bought the doll, but I'm still planning out the tail. I'll post a picture when I'm done, since I just love to show people my creations (or in this case, modification). :)

I feel like a mermaid tail for a doll make with the BJD type jointed tail and a thin silicone cover (to hide the joints, I hate joints being visable) would be a great idea.

I was a bit of a doll collector up until last year :) I collected Monster High, Winx Club dolls, and of course a few Barbie Mermaids! :) So mermaid Barbie's are my thing if I'm honest! I still own my collection, they're just in storage for now, as I've run out of room. Ugh I need to move out :P

Anyways, here's a little guide to some of my favourite mermaid Barbie dolls! :)

Mermaid Fantasy dolls:
These three dolls were stunning! They had non-removable tails, but with a press of a button at the hips the tails flapped just like a real tail would! Three mermaids to choose from - Purple tail, Green tail or blue tail.

Fairytopia Original Mermaid dolls:
These dolls were released a few years before the Fairytopia movie was released. These mermaids had moving tails, that were again not removable. They came in Yellow/orangey, Purple/pink, and blue.

Magical Mermaid Barbie & Krissy:
This was my first ever Barbie doll, and on top of that she glows!! :) when in water. This is a stunning set of dolls.

I'm starting my scales and will soon order clay to make the fluke.
I think bjd owners needs tails that are not ball jointed :)

that shouldn't be too hard, BJD owners would pay quite a bit for a good tail for their BJD. Everything for BJD's is expensive.

I would love a monster high one :)

I had a Lady Lovely Locks mermaid as a little girl. She had a sparkly purple tail and really long hair, which got horribly tangled and made me sad, so I didn't play with her much.
