They start at 8 pm EST on Animal Planet tonight, I believe. :D

So they're talking about this on HLN right now. They're even taking calls with someone from Weeki Wachee. I don't understand though why people keep calling it a 'hoax' though, because Animal Planet seemed to make it pretty clear it was a mockumentary. People calling in seem to be somewhat upset that it wasn't real.

link to the complete thing:

I didn't really like it btw.
There was nothing new to add, just more "shaky handcamera footage".
They seem intent on pretending it's real, and yet they again have nothing but cgi and their faked Bloop signature. :/

I had a girl at last night's event tell me about the mermaid stuff she heard from this and she thought it was real till she saw me and i told her .I'm fairly upset at how they don't tell you enough that its fake. They make it sound like its a real one in the commercials. As far as im concerned, we are the real mermaids. This show definitely doesn't do performing mermaids any good.

Nope, I don't believe ppl do, which is why all the silly questions about it. I didn't watch the first one, and certainly won't watch the second one. It just seems to put us Mers in a bad light, having to defend what we do and why, and how misrepresented the show is, and try to change ppl's minds. Geez!

the science community was REALLLY pissed about this. Well known scientists all over the world spoke out on the news and twitter etc. I had a "fan" take a bit of a fit because I pointed out it's a mockumentary. Somehow my saying it's a mockumentary= I don't are about the ocean in her mind -_-.

interesting article that I think points out all the issues I have with it: http://tv.yahoo.com/news/mermaids--nonsense-or-nuisance--192009947.html

Lol I'm sorry I keep posting, but I finally got around to watching the second one. I love how the "Dr" is a so called expert and yet all these lay people are showing him mermaid stuff he's never seen before. :p I believe the last time this aired I was able to look up the actor who plays him and show him without his beard. I think it's on an old thread around here somewhere. Ah yes, here they are: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1816585/ lol

ok i thought i was going crazy. was i the only one who saw the disclaimer? because no one was talking about it. then i saw this:

http://www.theweathernetwork.com/news/articles/do-mermaids-exist-a-new-animal-planet-documentary-had-some-believing-so/7156/

skip to this part of the article: A brief disclaimer in the end credits did say the show was not factual but many did not seem to notice.

good to know i wasnt crazy ;__; i thought i was seeing things...

I'm floored to see how many people take offense to this show being uncovered a second time as fictional! People should focus on what is really harming the oceans creatures, like those seismic blasts, and sonar testing from the navy, over fishing, shark finning, seal standing ect... than a fictional show. We as ambassadors, and mascots, of the seas and oceans, need to promote this way of thinking.

Winged Mermaid

I agree with Spotted. One of the huge things they wanted to get people to pay attention to via this was the sonar testing. Sonar testing harmed marine life and beached whales in different places all over the world for over TEN YEARS! It was recently halted and denied in SoCal, but that doesn't mean it's going to stop!

"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it."

As long as there is more than one person out there saying this was real, people will be inclined to believe it.

I bet you that the mermaid on the rocks clip will end up on Fact or Faked this summer, if it hasn't already.

My wife thought I would be really into these documentaries until I explained that not only were mermaids not real, but that I didn't want them to be. It would be like finding out Santa is real "So you mean there really is a large guy in a red suit breaking into my house through my chimney to give gifts to my children?" Part of the fun of mermaids is their magic, leaving them always stuck somewhere between the sea and the land. If they were real the magic would be gone, replaced by biology and physiology, now a quantifiable phenomenon. I want the imagination and fantasy. I want to hear Ariel sing and watch Madison break televisions at Bloomingdale's before flopping on the ground in front of a New York hotel. I want to see Raina swim in a pool while children stand in awe around her because -even if only for the blink of an eye- she made them believe in the impossible.

If they wanted to start a discussion on the effects of sonar testing on seagoing mammals, I think talking about the real story would have been far more interesting.

Merfolk are real because they are magical.

This sums up how I feel about both these mock documentaries: http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2012/05/mermaids-embodies-the-rotting-carcass-of-science-tv/

I don't care if someone loves these mock documentaries, and I don't care if anyone believes mermaids exist or not, but staking beliefs on these two pieces of fiction doesn't reflect well on anyone.

I love mockumentary things, though I think this one could have been way better done. Grew up with parents who can't get enough of paranormal, supernatural, and unexplained shows. Unfortunately that kinda did ruin my enjoyment of some things like this, have seen so many things on how to debunk footage that I just can't see anything but how fake this was.

Even if a form of real mermaids exist in the ocean, they should stay hidden in my opinion. Somethings were just not meant to be found. If they are real and are discovered then poachers will go after them as well and if they are as intelligent as we are, it'd be even more horrible.

I enjoyed the first part.
Well, most of it.

The second...should never have surfaced. Ugh.

if they are as intelligent as we are
...
Sanity and rationality are important for intelligence, and look what humans do:
they always look for ways to kill each other, poison their own food and environment, and seldom overcome their instincts for reason.

I wonder how long the species can make it :/

In terms of missing the disclaimer, it isn't present if someone watches a leaked part on youtube. And in that light, I have a confession. I thought that my mother was a somewhat rational human being, but I laughingly showed her one of the videos of "real mermaids" (because those are now the most searched mermaid videos on youtube and show up in the queue first). Then we had a little argument. She had "heard" about this and thought that the video was real. It was the one with the "scientists" in the submarine.

I seriously wanted to cry. :( It's not real!!!!

Brine

I would like to think that they are out there, hiding from humans and their destructive ways. Whether they are real or not, it doesn't matter. They need to stay in mythology and obscurity. Let's face it, Whenever we humans discover something new, we poke it and prod it and cut it open. We stick it in a box and monitor it's every move. We kill more than we save because we have to prove that we are the dominant species on this planet. And if there's anything that challenges that, it has to be destroyed. So it's better that we never find out the truth. Especially if it's some mythical being that's smart enough to keep hidden for thousands of years.

@ Brine,

So true, so true! Embarrassing for a so called advanced species, all the destruction of habitat, and the population explosion that presses on the environment. Sad.
