Well, this was last summer, my sister was bored and she has a pixie cut so she wanted to play with my hair. She ended up doing 37 small braids in my long hair. We watched the whole movie of Troy before she was done. Lol

And this is my hair now. I want to still do something style wise with it, like a perm of something different (I've had straight hair my whole life haha) this is the very first time we have ever done anything chemically with it. We colored it blue! It isn't as bright as it should be because we didn't bleach my hair first (on purpose). But I love it. Maybe we will bleach next time. Idk. Idk if I even want to do that. But ya the pictures don't really do anything justice, you know lighting, my hair, my face lol. But... Lookie! :D

I have Hawaiian hair, dark brown, mid-thigh and very straight. I bleached some of it once and put in a royal purple that looked amazing! HOWEVER, bleaching killed my hair and it took forever to grow it out! So if you're going to bleach then color, have a pro do at least the bleaching part.

JustCOS and PearlieMae I'm SO jealous of your length!!! Trying to grow out my hair and it's taking so long lol.. actually it's growing sort of fast considering 3 1/2 years ago it was chin length and now it's just passing my boobs lol! But it want it to be to my butt!! It needs to grow faster😂😂😂😮

Be careful about getting a perm! I did that when I was younger and the curls were so so tight and I had chosen one of the bigger size curlers. It took forever to grow out and the growing part looked strange because the bottom was curler than the top part.

PearlieMae
07-14-2015, 11:17 AM
Be super careful! Hairdresser burned off ALL MY FREAKING HAIR because she forgot about me! Remember, this was before self-timing perms, but the perm process damages your hair to get it to curl around the rods.

Sorry if this is huge, just took the photo.
I have naturally curly hair that is growing out from a buzz cut I got two years ago, when my grandmother was first diagnosed with cancer. (She's in remission, now)

So I just got my first trim, which took off a lot of hair because it had to even everything out. :(

But, here is my hair.

Mine felt like it took FOREVER to get to my waist, then it seemed like a month later it was at my hips, then I kind of forgot about it until I started sitting on it all the time. If you can distract yourself from checking the length, it'll feel like less time. :) I devoted the obsessive length-checking energy to learning all kinds of crazy braids.

I plan on keeping it simple. I have natural red hair I brighten with henna. It's naturally wavy and goes down to a couple inches below my bra strap. I have it cut about 2 inches and thinned every 6 weeks or so. Unfortunately the amazing colors you guys have (like that beautiful blue up there!!) don't last on my hair unless I use koolaid. I'm going to rely on braids and plants and such details for that mer look.

I've pretty much got the same hair as Ariel Starfish :) Thin, straight, but beautifully red from Henna ^^ My hair is so much stronger and healthier now that I've been using Henna other then chemical hair dye. But my hair still is very fragile. If I use conditioner, it's very soft and shiny, but it's also pretty useless because then I can't do ánything with it. So I usually don't use any conditioner. I give my hair a coconut oil mask every now and then.

I decided to just make a singular image of multiple little images. I felt it'd be easier. x.x These are mostly collected from my personal and mermaid tumblr. They're timelined (new -> old). In April I was challenged by a friend of mine to grow my hair longer (details (http://mermaid-aysel.tumblr.com/post/129993270898/mermaid-aysel-challenged-i-happened-to-get)). The first picture was taken today to update that challenge. I try to take advantage of the length I've achieved with my hair. I throw it into various, not-at-all consistent styles. I like braids quite a bit so my "casual" styles tend to include them. Crimps and curls are more common (because they take far less time than straightening my hair). The streaks are consistent with my tail's color.

♥ YUP! That's my hair. ♥

OK so I've got a couple of different hair things going on right now I wanted to update on:

Right now I've got a bob. it has grown out multiple times, but on the advice of my master stylist I have been getting 2 inches cut off it everytime I go in. Because my hair was just so dead, you can't fix totally dead hair! I have noticed a huge improvement in it since we started this routine, even though it's really sad to cut it off.

https://scontent-lga3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xpt1/v/t1.0-9/12144962_1136565663044842_1770192653412758461_n.jp g?oh=aa521c4f4c9559589473c75609aa95bc&oe=56C5E1D7

I still keep my hair short in the pool so far. I just tried to pretty it up with my head dress. It's sad to have gone from the long, but it was breaking off in giant patches everytime I swam. Even falling out at gigs.

https://scontent-lga3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xpa1/v/t1.0-9/12112303_1134959436538798_2282633507200404932_n.jp g?oh=0314eabb5c4dbb3eeb3f06e29dd3b5c4&oe=56B5D26F

To help me cope with cutting off my hair, she made me a hair extension halo. It's all one piece, and sits on your head and comes out underneath your real hair. You can add accent pieces if you like (which I do for a fuller look) It's REAL human hair, just dyed to match my own. I think you could use it underwater but because I added extra colours in mine- I don't. As repeated water use will drain the colour. it also took quite a bit to get it to match my natural hair, so this halo was more a learning experience and it's a bit fried lol

https://scontent-lga3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xpt1/v/t1.0-9/12122401_1136077159760359_6506018781452861283_n.jp g?oh=8150f181222ef9a8a3fca706474622ed&oe=56AFB0F7

So moving on, the halo is great for photoshoots and dry gigs but I wanted something I could wear in the water so I started researching lace front wigs and they seemed the best option. I picked up a cheap one on the advice of a friend and after watching a bunch of online videos about people using lacefront wigs for underwater filming. The general consensus is that it's good to own multiple ones, and they take a lot of work to maintain, and it takes a lot of practice to get the wig on just right. I figured since my wig was cheap it would be great to try out.

The wig got here... I was not expecting it to look... so gosh darn real and beautiful. This is me wearing it without even having glued it on yet

I have yet to try it in water. I love this damn wig so much I just want to wear it forever. I have been reading lots of tutorials out of how to make synthetic lacefront wigs last a long time and wear them everyday. THIS IS MY DREAM HAIR. What I've always wanted. SO I BOUGHT A SECOND ONE. Haha. The second one is on it's way. I will test one in the water and if I like it, use it for water gigs OR at the very least, photoshoots and videoshoots. And keep one for everyday use and dry gigs.

*haven't tested it underwater yet, will soon, will keep you posted**

My master stylist just made me a second, stronger, longer halo just in time for my trip to Florida. She sent me a WIP pic of it, here's how it's going to look:

33825

I decided to go with blue and purple as a homage to the blue and purple hair I had as a teenager.

So now, I have multiple options to hold me over while we keep cutting my real hair and growing it back healthier.

if you haven't seen it yet I did a whole interview with my master stylist about my damaged hair, mermaid hair in general, halos, and her talking a lot of science about hair!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eydMz_gMhh4

If you're curious how halos work, it shows you there. My halos are custom made by my stylist.

Raina, those hair pieces are amazing! And your hair is looking so much healthier and shinier! I know how hard it is to go short to get it back to healthy, but just keep cutting off the fried bits and babying the new stuff, and you will have long, healthy hair again. :) The color of that wig is perfect on you!

Here is my hair! I just got a couple inches cut off because they were dead ends really bad! Love seeing all the tips for hair growth! I have one of my own. I use GNC vitamins for hair, skin, nails they are chews and are AMAZING!! They have a lot of bioten that you hair needs to grow! Also I let my hair always air dry and brush my hair bottom to top. I use mane-n-tail shampoo & conditioner. I have a friend that has told me how she got her hair to grow is by not getting it cut except trimming her own dead ends and she makes her own hair masks. She has told me that she uses coconut oil, avocado sometimes and actually leaves it in her hair overnight in a cap. Hope some of those things help! You are all super beautiful and I'm so jelly of your hair! I have really fine hair but thankfully there is lots of it! :)

Yay mermaid hair thread!
But first.. how do you get your hair to grow and stay so long?! Before I started mermaiding I had loooong locks like most of you do. But mermaiding regularly has kinda destroyed my hair even though you try everything to protect it and keep it healthy. To compare here is my hair before and now:

34274

34275

It just dies :D and you have no choice but to cut it. Though there's nothing funny about it and it's a small personal tragedy, because I do prefer longer hair on myself, but shorter one is SO much easier to keep healthy and good looking! No more tons of oils and conditioners after each swim lol :D When practicing it's also much easier to stuff under swimcap. There's also the plus of using extensions, clip ons and wigs with short hair. You can switch your style easily (I use different looks with each tail). Here's some neat hair stuff I use :)

34276

34277

Half wigs. Suuuper easy! Protects most of your hair. Sometimes little hard to get to stay on, but looks authentic. People always think this is my real hair. Nope, fooled you!

34278

Full wigs. Bit rarely use these, because you have to take your time and properly adjust, glue etc to make them stay on and usually I don't have the patience to do that. I use lace fronts for shoots and "normal" wigs for kids parties etc where the wig needs to be able to take a little beating. With lace fronts you have to be careful or your hairline will come loose..

34279

And last, my fav, the pony tail clip on! It is so _ridiculously_ easy to put on and it STAYS! I've had kids pulling my pony tail (teasing, playing) and it has never come off. You get cool hairdos when you add flowers, shells, braids etc to it. Headdresses, tiaras and so on stay put wonderfully since your own hair is tucked tight under the hair clip.
And I love it since it reminds me of Megara's hair. Period. :D

Riia, those hair pieces are amazing! Rocking the Meg look

I don't swim a whole lot (because I'm lazy and way too paranoid about being out in the sun too long) so my hair is spared from the typical mermaid problems. Before I saw this topic I thought it was long (reaches my upper thighs), but wow, there's some crazy long hair on here! Here's a picture with no styling or blow-drying, after just having sat out in the sun and wind for a little while — 'bout as natural as it gets!

I actually just got my hair trimmed, it's now just below shoulder-length. I had grown it out for a while but was tired of how easily long hair gets tangled. When it comes to maintenance, I'm very lazy, so I try to find a length that's long enough to look feminine but short enough to not be high-maintenance

What I would suggest is conditioning it right after, and doing Hot oil treatments in between bleaching...It will give your hair the nutrients you burned out...Theres youtube videos on how to do it, you can make it out of stuff people usually have at home, it works like a dream! you can also just dye it right after you bleach it!

I love all the rainbow colored hair! PearlieMae, the bleaching/dyeing will make your hair more prone to breakage even after it's "recovered." If you keep up with oiling your hair regularly and not just right after, you can keep it healthy. I grew my bleached/dyed/dyed again ends out from my roots to my butt with minimal trims this way, and they look healthy and thick.

Yeah, I've murdered my hair way too many times and have since learned my lesson there.

My hair goes to the backs of my knees now, and is in great shape. I've 'harvested' a ponytail's-worth of hair from my hairbrush and am using it to create my own colored extensions.

I just wanted to know the best way to remove the natural color to prep it for dying.

I'm going blond again so I'll post a photo of that.
I'm a very dark blond but my hair has either been red or almost black for the most part of my life.

If you watch Hetalia you'll know who is my favourite character when I post the photo. Plus I really really like his hair style.

Calizaire, where did you get yours from?
I got it at http://www.wigisfashion.com/
I was super jazzed about Iona's thread on wigs and hairpieces because I'd been wanting a wig but hadn't gotten around to taking the plunge. I looked at several sites but I liked the ones on this site best, many styles I think would appeal to mermaids. I used it two weekends ago for the first time and it was kind of lame because the glue I wanted wasn't in stock at the beauty supply store so I used wig tape instead and it wasn't great. Now I have my wig glue, remover, and scalp protectant on it's way via Amazon so I'm eager to give it another shot.
The wig is super comfortable, I'd totally recommend it. I picked one my own haircolor and liked this style because it's what my own hair does at the beach; the blown away ringlets.

Yay, I'm glad you found my thread helpful/encouraging! ^_^ The wig looks great on you! I also bought some wig tape from Sally's and it fizzled. I have had people swear by wig tape though, so I guess not all tape is created equal. I'mma try some tape and glue from amazon (some ones with good reviews) and see which I like best! Good luck with the glue, hope it works well!

Thank you! And for doing all that research!
The tape held well, (I got it at Sally's as well) I just was not to adept at using it and some stuck out and looked janky. I had wanted to buy the glue there but they only had black and I wanted the clear drying kind so it was a last minute decision.
I got these three products together, they all had good reviews and I watched a few tutorials on YouTube that recommended them

Guys, how do wigs and extensions do underwater?

I have clip in human hair extensions I've worn underwater and they were fine. Prepped them the same as I do my own hair before getting in a pool and then rinsed them out/conditioned them after use. They were hella tangled in my own hair though, takes a buncha conditioner in the shower to remove them.

Just happy to help! It's why I do what I do ^_^ Yeah I think my wig tape was just too thin, my husband picked it up for me (I was in a rush to get to a con) and it was super thin/tiny and I didn't do well with it. I gave up after one piece cause I couldn't get the backing off the other pieces! :P The piece I did get off wouldn't stick well. I think it was maybe meant for a different purpose, like applying small wefts of hair extensions instead of a full wig.

Please yes, do a review! I'm sure myself and others would find that very helpful :)

I don't perform with this hair style, but I LOVE the new look! I got it cut and colored. I would have rather not cut it but my last cut had a lot of weird layers and I'm trying to grow them out. The purple will eventually fade to lilac, which was the color I was going for. :)

I am one of the few mers out there with a pixie cut (any other pixie mers? Id live to see photos!)
When I started mermaiding, I had hair down past my chest. I cut my hair off about 5 years ago and never looked back (decision was unrelated to mermaiding at the time. I just wanted something different)

I LOVE short hair as a mermaid. It's so easy and hassle free. Dries fast with minimal styling needed

I am currently a brunette. Neither color in the photos are my natural color. I ADORED my dusty blonde color, but chlorine would destroy it and make it go yellow (and at $150/mo to maintain, that was a little crazy). So I'm now a brunette. The chlorine still messes with the color (it tends to have red undertones) but I spend $10 and touch it up myself whenever I need to.

While I love many things about my short hair (including less of it in my face when swimming and faster drying after swimming), I'm growing it back out. I miss being able to do more stuff with it, and I actually miss having the option to NOT wash it; bed head is a pain! It's still pretty short right now tho.

We cut 11,9 inches of my hair off in January, but we just died it last week. We bleached first this time and we put blue, purple, and pink in. It didn't come out as bright as I thought, cause my hair is so blonde, but I still love it. The blue pops the most and the purple's more lavender and the pink is very light and makes it look almost silver. :) Were gonna leave it on longer next time. ;) <3

Hey Babes, I was wondering, if anyone is henna-ing their hair, how does it 'behave' in clorinated water or salt water?
Aaaand if anyone is using Indigo? Initially it is for darkening/browning/blackening hair along with henna, and I read in eeeevery single natural hair dye forum "do not use indigo alone on blonde hair omg just dont, it COULD turn green/blue/purple" - and Im like :DD why not? I want to switch to natural atleast in dyeing my hair, but before I make a uniform reddish-brown with henna+indigo I wanted to try just indigo on the bottom half of my hair (wich is already almost blonde from the dye, wears-out, dye, wears-out). Made it on a small fringe, it turned out very light silverish-blueish, kinda natural even that its blue :D just wanna know if anyone tought of it already? Or to mix with cassia so it could be a natural green-ish on light hair? Ah am excited to make the rest of my hair then I will put on pic too ^^

Ah am excited to make the rest of my hair then I will put on pic too ^^
I use BAQ henna in my hair. Never fades or bleeds and the Reconstruction aspect of henna keeps my hair thick and Shiny.. Very Ariel...

I don't usually post pictures, but I suppose I shall take the plunge (pun slightly intended) and give it a go!

My hair used to be long and red, but, much to the disgruntlement of a few who knew me, I decided to cut and dye it pink and blue.

Thank you! I'm hoping to get a higher quality tail with this same colour scheme someday. :)

Obligatory bathroom selfie ahoy! Everyone is always confused when I tell them I grow my hair out in the summer and cut it in the winter. I'm in Texas, so most people do the exact opposite.

Wait. Your hair grows that long in the summer????? It would take literal YEARS for my hair to get that long.

Not quite that fast! But I do trim anywhere from 3 to 6 inches in the fall, so technically its always long.

Man, I have some serious hair eny right now. It is almost making me want to grow my hair back out... But I can never seem to get it past my shoulders anymore. If anything, I'm getting shorter and shorter! [emoji38]
I recently had my hair re-dyed back to red and I LOVE it.
It is so shiny in the sunlight.
Oh the feels of freshly coloured hair... <3https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170830/e2facdb743d79521556f24d072011e25.jpg

I have the silliest, more uncoordinated curls. They never sit the same way, all follow their own line, it's a big strange. But I wouldn't change it for anything!!
Except maybe make it longer whenever I want.
And the ability to change the colour instantly too... [emoji14]
I had a buzz cut for a while. It was very easy to do my hair of a morning!! [emoji23]

I don't post alot on here but i thought my multiple colors deserved to be seen! I dye my hair so often, it is a new color every month practically! I first started out with doing just the tips on my super virgin hair😂https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170830/5b6218f0ace5cc8e397ed889cb54e6f3.jpg
And i fell in love with doing it so i did it again and again! https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170830/3e07318722c4b19ebb7d511ac85475ad.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170830/7ca9cf682ae8cf6477d478454f0e7619.jpg
Then i decided to take the plunge and go ALL in!
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170830/d26d5dba7a6d9ab2586ac84b9a0d934d.jpg
Looking at this picture makes me want to do ombre again!
Then i tried something new

That blue and green ended up matching my custom tail perfectly!
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170830/93755e78d4ec24b3e0bcca1f85b933c1.jpgAnd after a few weeks that blue and green turned into.... whatever this is
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170830/9cd7a9ed9cb08962eb81770f7175838e.jpg
But i will be doing something new very soon. Just don't know what yet! Any ideas?

It’s been a minute and my new position doesn’t allow me to do funky colors again. Before https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181219/2c94a78440ab1772bc14b08310e5e3ce.jpg
