Hey everyone! I've been getting into mermaids for the past few months, looking for all the info I could find on making my own mer-tail, and eventually I ended up here! My name is Christiee, I guess you could say my mer-name is Sharkie, and Squeaky Chewtoy is what I go by on most of the Internet. I'm a visual artist who has done some costume work, but never a mermaid tail before, so here I am working on my first one. I even made my own monofin, which I will talk more about in the Monofin section at some point. :D I just took my first test swim in it today, and omg it's so great! I don't think I ever want to swim without one again. ;) I really feel like a mermaid with it on and I can't wait to finish the rest of this tail! My mermaid self is part tiger shark(hence Sharkie), and probably a little radioactive. I found some neon green spandex that glows under blacklight that I think I want to use for it!
As for some history behind my mermaiding journey, I was first drawn to mermaids at a very young age. Splash was my favorite movie for most of my young life. After a while my interest in mermaids faded, I'm not sure why. Probably something to do with being bullied, also from a young age. :/ I took swimming lessons when I was a wee one too, and always loved swimming, but when I hit high school swimming class, that changed for a while. Being on the heavy side, I ended up with some body-shame issues and didn't want to be seen in a swimsuit for a very long time.... Now, at 29, I think I can put all that negative crap behind me and start swimming on a regular basis again. I'm still on the heavy side, but I think if I swim a few hours every couple days, I may just drop some of that. I started going to open swims at the local college pool. I've wanted to be a mermaid since I was tiny. I'm finally going to live the dream! WOOHOO! :D
Gotta say, I had felt for a while like I had something missing in my life. Must've been mermaids, because now I feel great. :D
