Hahaha, love the Wedding Crashers one! I didn't read the books, so I did sit there going "whaaaa? No. Wait. No! NOOOO!"

well even when I read the books I screamed. Though, in the books they make you think Arya dies from an axe to the head and you dont realize she's alive til a few chapters later. So I thought they were ALL gone. Brutal.

I've been waiting for the red wedding forever!!! I'm keep thinking, "the next episode, or the next one....oh HURRY UP ALREADY!!!" It was very well done. Now I want to see the aftermath and how well it follows the book.....

(I don't like how the characters have the wrong names, or the wrong people die tho....that's irritating)

GAHHHHHHHH

I'm not a book reader. So I was NOT prepared. Not in the slightest!! God that whole ending made Ned's death look like a fucking birthday party!

And Jon's just like "Lolololol crows before hos!"

GAHDAMNIT.

I haven't been watching the show, but I read the books. Based on peoples reactions, it sounds like the red wedding might have worked better on the show, since it didn't have much effect on me when I read it. Mostly I was just annoyed since it felt so random. My brother has suggested to me that in Song of Ice and Fire there isn't a lot of causality, and the decisions people make often don't impact the outcome of a scenario, and the red wedding definitely made it feel like that was true of everything Caitlin and Robb had done since the end of book one. Plus with so many character deaths it was kinda desensitizing and made their deaths affect me less. Fortunately I enjoyed book four way more than book three, and in retrospect I appreciate that he reduced the number of freaking characters that the story has to follow.

I think the thing that surprised the book readers was that they actually killed Talisa (Jeyne in the books) since in the books his wife wasn't even there.

How true does the picture of Martin snoozing in front of the computer seem to those who have been reading the books for more than a decade now?

I never felt that there was anything in the books that undermined the idea of causality as far as the actions of the characters and their plans were concerned, more that Martin was trying to get away from the kind of fantasy series in which the characters are the absolute centre of the universe and events happen to further their goals rather than them being swept along with the flow of larger events that they can't either see coming or have known about. Some would argue that the Red Wedding was a direct result of the path that Rob Stark had been on since calling the banners and then deciding that he wanted to marry his lover over Walder Frey's daughter, the same being true of Caitlyn using Jaime Lannister as a bargaining chip for her own daughters' freedom rather than executing him at the behest of men like Rickard Karstark and Roose Bolton. In addition Martin has said that he based a lot of the family feuding and wars on the English Wars of the Roses, and believe me when I say that those saw a lot of bloodshed between noble houses and many occasions on which well-laid plans were frustrated and members of the royal family butchered when they thought that they were in a position of power and safety.

Never read the books, haven't watched the series. I did learn something very disturbing on this thread, however. I looked in a mirror and realized that I look a lot like George R R Martin. Oh God, I even have a hat like that!

I did my masters thesis on the Wars of the Roses, I wonder if I would find the books worth reading?

I'll give it serious consideration. You, of course, know how I react when I disagree with the way an author kills off characters; this guy's homicide rate sounds positively Shakespearean!

I was thinking about that too, because what if in the later books the unborn child becomes important, or Jeyne?

You and I are total opposites. Book 3 was my fav and I almost gave up on reading book 4. Book 4 and 5 go together but they were too big as a vollume so they broke them up and you miss out on some characters in each one, and have to re-read the same story line, and then it takes forever to figure out who Reek is and why the hell you're reading POV of a "new" character.... I got bored with 4. But at the end of 5 I threw the book across the room. If you didn't like the red wedding, you probably wont like the ending of book 5.

I think the whole point it to narrow down the list of characters. When you think about it, we're due the royal wedding yet and all the events that unroll after that. And therefore the introduction of some more new characters and old characters.
R'hllor is basically a main character now (I know you can't see him, but don't go dissing on the Lord of Light) maybe they'll write in some more stuff if they need to cover their asses :)

All I have to say to that is remember the example of Berric Dondarrion and Thoros of Myr, and then remember where Melisandre has been hanging around and showing an interest in throughout ADWD.

Which is amusing when you consider that Martin looks rather like the Fast Show character "Johnny Nice Painter".

He wrote the screenplay for one episode every season.

"The Pointy End" ep08 s01
"Blackwater" ep09 s02
"The Bear and The Fair Maiden" ep07 s03

Simple, Jeyne wasn't pregnant, her mother was in with the Lannisters and was giving her potions to keep her from conceiving because the Lannisters helped plan the red wedding and did not want an heir for Robb. She is later pardoned by them, and married off to nobility.

is she? or is that your theory? I can't remember that. I remember the Jeyne was it from winterfell who they pretended was Arya

I remember the Jeyne was it from winterfell who they pretended was Arya Robbs wife in the books name is Jeyne Westerling, I think there might have been two. But yeah, it was written in that her mother was in with the Lannisters and was feeding her potions to stop her from conceiving so Robb wouldn't have an heir, but was telling her it was fertility potions. Later the Lannisters marry her to nobility after pardoning her.

The one you are thinking of is Jeyne Pool, whom they disguised as Arya.

I don't recall her getting married off....?
But yes, because there isn't a child in the books, because she was never able to fall pregnant, she really isn't that much of an important character.

The tv series made her pregnant (as well as changing her name and origin; Jeyne from The Crag to Talisa from somewhere is Essos) so that you become more involved in the show as you form an attachment to the character....
