View Full Version : Ways to avoid cutting my monofin?

Well, I've decided I'm going to make myself a new fabric tail for vacation. :) I've made plenty of fabric tails before (I'm considering selling them, too!) so I know what I'm doing there, but I've always cut my monofin in a fluke shape. So, my question for you guys; is there a way for me to avoid cutting my monofin? I need my monofin (using the finis wave) to be the shape of my fluke, but I don't want to cut it.

Anyone have any ideas?

You can add onto it! Look for Jadestone's thread on how she did hers. Many others have done it since.

I added a lovely mother of pearl fringing and cut it to the shape i liked at the edges and concealed it with sequins over the top ! it looks really quite nice and you dont have to cut your fin !

I added to mine. I did mine similar to the way jadestone did hers. I used wide and long zip ties and gorilla tape to make the shape, then cut the tape and ties into the finished shape then gave it another layer of tape to smooth things out. I also went over the tape seams with hot glue. So far it's been through a few swims and it works really well!

I added to mine, too. I used FRP/plastic wall paneling (like Moonflower recommended in her video, but mine was thicker) and Gorilla taped the heck out of it to the monofin as I didn't want to drill holes in mine. I've taken it for 4-5 swims and it's still holding up so far.

Hey :) I see some people beat me to mentioning the method I used, haha. I have a description and pictures of how I extended mine here: http://mernetwork.com/index/showthread.php?2548-First-time-tailmaking-Jade-s-attempt

A couple other people have tried it so far, and it seems like it's holding up pretty well for everyone so far :) Ever now and then some duct tape might have to be replaced or some added, but I haven't had this issue yet. I'm just guessing it'll loose a bit of stick over time and repeated submersion in water :) I've found "Power Tape" duct tape to be the most waterproof as it's made to keep sticking underwater specifically.

Good luck! If you decide to use this method and have any questions, I'd be happy to answer them if I can :)
