View Full Version : Tail at the Craft Store

So, while I was buying my new cloth tail material (yes, a new tail this year for my new fin), I saw that hte craft store had a mermaid tail handing up above their active wear department. Was very simple cloth tail, no fins or paint job, and it was fashioned with a finis monofin that had been cut into a fluke shape. (Child size, why didn't they just use the already mermaid-shaped one?)
It was neat to see but I had mixed feelings over it. Anyone can, and should be, a mermaid or merman, but I was a little of-fin-ded (bad pun) when I was asked if I was making a tail like they one they had. Pardon my hispter moment, but I was like "I have made several tails, this is my 5th cloth one, see?" and proceeded to whip out my photos of my tails from my wallet... I didn't know what felt worse.
Oh well, that aside... YES! Starting a new tail! Purple!
And if I have to return some paint, which I might, I will get a pic of the tail.

hehe.
You should've said,
"Pffft. A MUCH better one!
I'm making pro tails. Yours isn't even painted, lol."

Here is a picture of it at the store. I had to return some paint that was not needed for the new tail.

So I guess it was a wave and not child sized, but I am used to Rapids being adult size since I has large feet. ;)

Doesn't look bad!
A few painted scales would enhance it considerably, though.

It's not bad looking, but it's really bland and the monofin cut is a little odd looking to me. It's probably just because I prefer a longer monofin, and extended my own rather than cutting the fin into shape.
If I would have been in your place, I would have been completely flabbergasted! Then when the lady asks about making a tail, I would probably get a wee bit cocky. "Yes I am making a tail, and no not like that. I'm going for a realistic looking tail, rather than just shiny. I love the fabric though." Then I would probably ask who made it, and then give a couple of business cards to the lady for herself and whoever else was the mermaid or tail maker. ^_^

By any chance was this a Fabric Depot? I just notice that you're also North Pacific, and I know I've seen one at the Fabric Depot I've been to outside of Portland.

Haha I knew it :3 It would have been really weird/cool if there was more than one craft store with tails!

I know that tail! Rebecca MacKay of he Rouge Mermaids made a tutorial on how to make a tail and the people in her local store loved it so much they made some to hang for display! :)

Don't feel bad that the store had a mermaid. It doesn't matter whether they know you knew about mermaiding first. You know. And its exciting to see it growing in popularity.

Hi Ponytales! Call them first before you waste your gas and time. I've found that all our fabric stores in Mass (the JoAnns Fabric dominates here, has bought out all the smaller stores, and a couple bigger ones, too) does not carry neoprene. You will probably have to order it ::::sigh:::: , if not, you are really lucky, but I would call first!

Well I'm already headed there for unrelated things. Just was wondering if I should be keeping an eye out for neoprene too. As it is my bf will be hating me for how long I'll be wandering around (thank goodness they have their 'husband room' with tvs!)
Interesting, kinda cool! I wonder who pitched the idea to showcase a tail. Who knows, a mer could be working there! :)
