My grandmother came from the Caribbean. She grew up in Haiti and moved from there to Jamaica then to Florida. She grew up in a world where even to this day people still believed in voodoo and the powers of magic spells and curses and potions. Growing up she told me many stories from her homeland. Stories of spirits and curses and the wraths of Haitian voodoo gods, but my favorite story and the one she told most often was the story of the sailor and the fish wife.
She always said the story was a part of our history, our heritage.

The story told of my grandmother, great, great, grandfather who upon escaping enslavement became a whaler on a large vessel where he was well liked and the pay was good. The ship sailed for nearly a year, hardly ever making port or seeing land. After a year the ship turned it sails towards home. The closer and closer the ship drew to home the odder my ancestor began to act. He spent all night on deck and could often be heard speaking to someone but when spied he was merely leaning over the side of the ship talking to the water. If disturbed in his nightly ritual he became very defensive. Finally the ship arrived home and as all the men left to greet their waiting families. My ancestor walked off the ship hand in hand with a beautiful woman. No one knew who she was or where she had come from and she spoke not one word. My ancestor married her and they had three children just as beautiful as their mother with the same long wavy black hair and bright expressive eyes and fair dark skin.
Then one day she vanished leaving my great, great, grandfather with his three eerily beautiful children.
Grandmother told me we were the offspring of those three children and that they had been the children of a water woman, a mermaid. She said the sea was in our blood and the sea always claims its own.
I would 16 the day the sea laid its claim on me and 16 forever more.
