IT'S FINALLY HAPPENINGGGGG

So, I've always needed braces. Big time. I had two sets of baby teeth (apparently I am a shark) so I had mostly all of them pulled out, and them some adult teeth. My teeth overlap big time, and some of my teeth are above others. I am super self-concious about them, so I've trained my lips to cover most of them except for the two front teeth when I talk. Most people don't notice, but I notice. They're so jam packed in there, it's hard to eat, it's hard to talk, and they are super hard to clean! I am 27 and went my whole life without cavities and just found out I had 3. I literally spent my first book check today on paying for a cleaning, and 3 fillings.

So, while I was at the dentist, I told her I didn't see me being able to get dental insurance any time soon, and I asked her if we could have a serious talk about braces and a payment plan. I also mentioned I knew more teeth would probably have to come out, and I mentioned I wanted to go to the hospital and get them all yanked at once. She took a look and told me she could fix my teeth without taking any out (which seriously blew my mind, I've always been told by other dentists that at least 3 had to come out, granted, that was over 10 years ago and dentistry has made huge leaps in the past decade) and then... she said... she could give me braces... PROBONO.

I bawled like a baby in the office. lol. I can't even believe this is happening. I have needed braces my whole life, but we were so poor growing up. She has done such amazing work on my sisters when they needed their braces, and Ama was actually much worse than I am and anyone who has seen Ama knows she has the best smile going. I just can't believe this is finally going to happen.

Naturally, I am going to ask for ones to match my tail hahaha. Seriously though, I know it kinda sucks being an adult with braces... but THEY'RE FREE BRACES. I am so stoked to start being able to do open mouth smiles! And not have to worry so much about how my teeth show up in videos and photos, and really, to just feel good about myself.

A lot of people don't think my teeth are bad, cuz they've never seen more than what I show. Trust me, they're bad. LOL

Oh my gosh, that's wonderful news!! I do have to say I've never noticed you have teeth problems, but it's always good to get things like that addressed if they bother you instead of feeling like you have to hide them :)

My teeth are a bit crooked (they un-straightened a bit a few years after losing braces :( ), but my mother and sister both have perfect teeth :mad:

Oh my gosh, I am so happy for you. I'm in the same boat- without the two sets... I had too many, though, and it changed my jaw shape and caused all sorts of problems. I've wanted braces my whole life and and as an adult, it's never been possible. Braces as an adult? No problem! And free, that is a heck of a dentist! :D Congratulations!!

I have a hole in one tooth because one of the dentists who did a filling when I was younger didn't fill it all the way.

I'm so happy for you! We're the same age and I had horrible teeth my whole life too. My sister had buck teeth and they fixed her teeth as a teenager, but they couldn't afford to do mine. I did the six month smiles braces last year and only had to wear them for 5 months and 2 days. I love the results and love my teeth now. I was in constant pain though because of the way they do the six month smiles. They filed between my teeth to make more room and used tooth colored titanium wire. From what I've heard I don't think regular braces are as painful as the six month smiles.

I know how much bad teeth can hurt your self-esteem and your confidence. I also was very careful about how I smiled before I had braces and didn't laugh much because I didn't want to show my teeth. It's amazing how much straight teeth can change your life. I never felt pretty before I fixed my teeth. I always was aware of my teeth and didn't smile much. I smile so much more now and love being able to show how I feel with a big smile!

I know it's going to be tough at first but try not to be self conscious about your braces! I was so self conscious when I had them and I shouldn't have been. I had clear braces and they weren't as noticeable as I thought they were. My own sister didn't notice I had them until I finally told her and my kids never even realized I had them! Even metal braces aren't as noticeable as you think and you get pretty rubber bands. Think of them as jewelry for your teeth!

Its absolutely amazing that your dentist is doing this for free. You are so blessed! When you do parties you can always tell the kids that you accidentally bit into a lobster/clam shell and the dentist had to fix your teeth....

I am so, so happy for you! I know how it is to be an adult with jacked teeth, and trust me, this is one of the best things that will happen to you. It was one of the best things that happened to me! I got a 25% discount from my orthodontist, and bawled all over his desk; I can't imagine having everything done pro bono. ROCK IT BABY!

Nothing for dental care is provided by the government UNTIL THIS YEAR. cleanings and cavities for kids under 14 are now covered. But prior to that, no free dental. We have health care, but we pay for it through taxes and the wait times are insane. (I waited 3 years for a surgery, that turned out to be the wrong one, and it's not uncommon to wait a whole day in the emergency room)

My orthodontist told me that my teeth were like three cars trying to be put into a two car garage :) My braces took three years from start to finish. I had four teeth removed (not counting wisdom teeth) and had some seriously crazy appliances. I made an album of the whole process here: http://imgur.com/a/kUKd2

Your teeth are going to be so beautiful when they're done, and you'll feel worlds better about yourself! People will tell you that they never noticed your teeth were crooked, etc. but if you're at all like me, they've bothered you and embarrassed you forever. Braces are one of the best things that happened to me.

Also. I'm gonna tell you right now a few things that no one told me, and I wished they had so I could have been prepared for it. They'll tell you things will ache sometimes. This is true; sometimes it's gonna do a lot more than ache. Take a bunch of advil and grab an ice pack and go to bed. Your teeth take about a full day to adjust to adjustments, and some adjustments are more intense than others.

The thing that hurt the worst for me was actually when I had the braces taken off. They pressure wash away all the glue with cold water. It takes about a half an hour and I have sensitive teeth, so that was the absolute worst. Your teeth will be sensitive as hell for about two months after you have your braces taken off- the general rule of thumb seems to be that the more movement there is, the more sensitivity there is. I had an issue where I thought a filling was falling out, since I got a nerve pain any time I took a step. This was on the tooth that moved the farthest, and the filling was fine- but the ligaments and nerve were so inflamed because of being moved so much that the tooth couldn't take any jolting. This took about a month to resolve, but the inflammation went down and I'm fine now :) All the same, I wish someone had told me that your ligaments and nerves will be inflamed for a bit because they're being moved in ways they don't want to go. It would have saved me some panic. So don't be scared, but be prepared that something along these lines might happen for you, too.

thanks! I have a very sensitive mouth. As part of one of my illnesses, I get regular bouts of cancor sores. I'm talking like 12-20 at a time. It makes it impossible to talk, eat, clean my mouth, breathe etc. When I don't have cancor sores, my mouth in general gets a lot of inflammation. I don't have gum disease or gingivitis, but with the way this illness attacks my body I might as well for the damage it does to my mouth. I did just get my very first filling- and my doc was so pro- I didn't feel a thing and was thankful. I had all my teeth extracted as a kid and that dentist put me through hell and I am convinced now that they never gave me enough freezing because I always felt everything painfully. Everytime I do this dentist, even when it's for simple stuff, she offers freezing cuz she knows how painful my mouth is on a regular basis. I am hoping straighter teeth will also lead to less abrasions in my mouth from my teeth scraping cheeks etc (though the cancor sores just show up, regardless of whatever preventative stuff I try)

I think the biggest thing I am worried about, is not being able to eat some stuff, because my diet is already so restrictive due to my illness that I don't eat a lot to begin with!

I found that it was easy to eat pretty much anything, as long as you're mindful of chewing while you're doing it. I didn't stop eating nuts or popcorn, for example, which they say is a no no. Also I ate hard candy whenever I wanted, just didn't bite down on it (never did anyway.) I have issues with textures in my mouth, so what gave me the most trouble was food getting stuck in the brackets (it would make me gag.) Peanut butter and jelly sandwich = GIANT MISTAKE!!!!! It took forever to clean out. I can't handle mushy bread so I had to be super careful with sandwiches. I would always run for the bathroom to rinse my mouth out as soon as I was done eating- people thought I was bulimic -_-.

I think they have all the food restrictions that they do because 90% of ortho patients are kids, who don't pay attention all the time when eating, and can pop brackets. The only thing I had trouble with appliance wise was food getting stuck on my bar and making me choke. I have a truly awful story about spaghetti noodles getting caught there and choking me in a restaurant, and a piece of sushi got stuck once there too. Well, and trying to take pain meds after my teeth extractions when I had only had the bar for a week, and hadn't really relearned how to swallow or talk yet- that was a mess. I really hope you get to skip the whole bar thing. But the braces themselves were fine food wise!

I'm glad you have a dentist who understands pain management. My oral surgeon didn't and I think it's scarred me for life. It turns out I have my mom's deal with novicaine- it has to be injected and then she goes and sits in the waiting room for the half hour it takes to kick in. I felt that guy pulling my teeth out, and what was worse was that he kept getting angrier and angrier with me about it. It was an awful experience, especially since I got a lingual frenectomy at the same time (I was tongue tied, so they cut it back a bit). Good dentists are worth their weight in gold!

My teeth weren't bad at all. My first dentist said that I probably wouldn't even need braces! I got them anyways-and still have them- and I can say that I am so happy with how it is coming out. My teeth are actually all straightened already they just need to set :D I can't wait to see the final results for you :)
And Ama's smile? Even I'm jealous :p

Hey guys I forgot I made this thread. I thought I might post an update! Back in July I had the crank appliance put in that you turn with a key every day. My pallet was so high and narrow it was effecting my ability to breathe! After getting that out in January, I had 3 adult teeth removed, braces put on, and another appliance in. I wanted to share some parts of my journey that I just posted online:

I had to share this client photo from Michelle. It's got special meaning to it for a few reasons. I have never given toothy smiles because of the issues with my teeth. Since I was about 10 I just stopped smiling with my teeth. If I showed anything it would be my front teeth. Most people didn't know I had teeth issues because I trained my mouth. I've never really seen myself give a sincere smile. Most smiles I give are forced and controlled.

When I was spending time with this little merling, I was just SO HAPPY to be a part of her special day that I kept smiling without even thinking. I was just full of joy and my face was showing it. I forgot about braces, forgot about my teeth, and when the client posted this photo online I honestly cried a little. I couldn't believe I was looking at ME. Those are my teeth! So close to being perfect! I've never seen them like that. (If you wanna see before and after you can see a pic on my instagram HFXmermaid ) I have never seen myself smile like that.

They aren't done yet. IN fact my journey is only just beginning. But I am so thankful to Michelle for capturing this photo... and to her daughter for bringing out so much joy in me that I forgot about my insecurity. And I am super thankful to my dentist for fixing my teeth. I smile now! Full on smiles. I am proud of my braces and the work they're doing and I want everyone to see. So I smile and it's awesome!! It's amazing what we take for granted :)


(Side note: please don't give me the speal about your teeth were fine the way they were before- because they weren't. And it affected my life in many ways. I appreciate the sentiment but those comments actually make me feel bad! I changed my teeth for ME not anyone else)

Wanted to show an update of my teeth cuz whoa whoa cant believe how much better they're getting!!!

I've only had them on since Feb 15th. To recap I've had two different roof of the mouth appliances: the first was that turney one, now I have a molar one. I've had 3 teeth pulled, braces, and on my last adjustment we added this chain thing and elastics.

The shape of my face has changed drastically I think. I've got way more definition and less chubby cheeks haha. The appliances expanded my cheek bones!

one of the big things is that snaggly eye tooth that was up so high came down! realllly fast.

I haven't quite figured out how to smile with my teeth. I always smiled with my mouth closed as long as I can remember. So I'm not great at giving a natural toothy smile haha I look Like I'm going GRRR lol

You can see in this silly selfie with my kitty and I that I've lost a lot of the roundness of the cheeks and now have more angles and lines. My bottom job is being pushed out a bit too so I've lost a bit of the double chin fun that was happening bahaha

still so shocked at that eye tooth. Man, like my eye tooth was on par with my nostril lol it came waaay down. I have a bit of an overbite still, and the bottom are all straight except one because it's not engaged with the wire yet. (they put a spring in it til July) but it wont be long before they're all lined up.

We;re using some fancy newly approved wired I guess they cut the time in half or more.

I've lost a LOT of weight too, Im skinnier than I've been in years. I'm not eating any less but I think I am eating slower and smaller portions more frequently. We also changed up my pain meds and just doing that I dropped 10lbs like instantly.
It's weird I was killing myself working out (like literally because it's so darn hard with chronic pain and illness) and not getting any results, but braces and a med change and I'm better than I've been in years lol. Here's hoping the slower eating and many smaller portions stays a habit.
