My name is Glenda and I'm pretty new to the mermaid community, but not at all new to the love of water and scales.
I am from rural Tennessee, and grew up riding horses, growing tobacco and corn and swimming in the lakes and rivers where we went camping. My parents used to joke about how they'd barely get an anchor in the water before I was over the side and swimming. They finally tied a longe line to the boat and clipped it to my lifejacket to keep me from swimming off.
I'm a child of the 80s and have a serious love for 80s cartoons that I grew up with; everything from GI Joe, to Jem and from He-man to My Little Pony, bring it on. I attend sci-fi and anime conventions regularly in the south east and give panels on them as well as costume from many of them. I actually met my husband while he was selling for a convention, and married him in November 2012, so we are still newlyweds trying to figure it all out. :-)
I learned about mermaiding as a hobby and skill a few years ago when a friend of mine and I started talking new versions of costumes to try out, and how fun would it be to see some superhero fins? After a little research I found videos of Mermaid Linden and Hannah and learned more about the community.
When choosing between two houses, my husband and I compromised that we would get the house closer to his work, if I could start fin-swimming since that particular house has a pool. After saving a bit of money, I've gotten my first monofin and have learned to swim in it fairly well. (we both agreed it would be best to learn with just my feet encased, before going full fish) i've bought supplies and have started researching how to construct my first tail.
I'm looking forward to learning more and being an active member as my work schedule allows me. This seems like a friendly place!
