OK so I have started sheathing my Finis Foil Monofin and am waiting for the rubber to dry. I am working on a revolutionary new scale pattern. Will set that in silicone in about a week or 2 after I finish the fin and my airbrush arrives to paint it.

Hi Golden Pearl! Thanks for sharing the wig and source to purchase! My hair is long enuf for dry events,

but for wet work, I would like to save my hair from as much chlorine exposure as possible and these wigs are a great choice. I also found that my length hair is about all I want, as it does have drag thru the water, and its harder to photograph to get it to flow in the right direction... you need more patience and breath control to get it to be where you want it.

What color did you get?

When they come in I would love to see a pix of the "scalp" to see how much "hair" they put per square inch, does it look fairly realistic?

Oh, yes ariel. They have loads of colors. Some of the brighter ones aren't as heat resistant (or soft and hair-feely) as the others but they do have an Ariel Red!

You CAN dye synthetic fiber wigs! There are many, many, MANY tutorials on how to on cosplay.com! I know that cracking open a sharpie and putting the ink thing into rubbing alcohol then using it to spray onto the wig works. That's your cheapest method. There are also people out there in the cosplay community who make special dyes for wigs of particular fibers. Just because it isn't human hair doesn't mean you can't dye it. We dye our wigs all the time in the cosplay world. Just look up some stuff on Cosplay.com and you should be good. Unfortunately, I don't remember the specific makers of the speciality dyes, but I do hope the marker method can help you!

Thank you. I tried it in my above ground pool before I painted it and it was REALLY hard to push the water and move my legs with how wide the fluke is. I think I may narrow it a bit at the top to make it more streamline and easier to use. I was looking at mertailor's and raven's and they arent quite this wide except for mertailor's beta fluke

I can't get over how shiny it is!
The shape is so beautiful, I hope you won't have to cut much away for better mobility.

^^I think such flukes, like some of the performance mertailor ones, are more designed to look good in a tank or for photoshoots,
and not swimming distances fast.
Fast swimmers look elegant but plain.

Guess the aspiring mer has to find some middle ground here.

I will leave it this shape for a while and see how it goes. It looks matte pearl inside the house but the sparkles in the metalic pigment come to life outside in the sunlight. Thanks ladies.
I will start a scale sheet next. I was hoping to make shell shaped scales but I don't feel like doing all that sculpting out of clay. So I think I will go with those foam soccer ball stickers.

Does anyone know where I can get a lot of little shell shapes instead? :D

That would be a great idea! But I think that the whole bat/shell part of the foam would be covered by the overlapping scales. Unless if you wanted to make them upside down.

This looks great golden pearl! Just be careful when you use dragonskin....it wont cure around latex so you can't use the same molds. (I wouldnt even keep it all in the same room) I love the colors you used! I can't wait to see you finish this! It's going to be a beautiful tail.

I am going about this whole project at snail pace but hopefully I will love it ultimately regardless.

Rushing things usually isn't beneficial for the project ;)
But I know the feeling when everything drags endlessly.
I'm currently re-working (painting) ALL my tails.

The krait tail was by far the most time consuming.
Two members of my synchro swim team have already asked whether I couldn't make one for them,
and while I'd love to do that (I had at once an idea for a wonderful choreography, "Dance of the Snakes", lots of mers all wearing krait tails...) the thought of doing it all over again is just too much lol.

I'll definitely put up pics of all tails once I finish, hopefully some nice videos as well.

Ah, so you'll make the scales in different sizes, with the biggest at the belly front?
I bet that looks more realistic than all being the same size.

I'm going for this with my painting pattern too, but only once it's finished I'll be able to see how it looks overall.

Well, incidentally, scales tend to be largest on the belly!
With snakes, the whole belly front is covered by a single huge scale, which results in the typical snake-belly look.

I considered a similar pattern for my tails, but it just doesn't look right somehow, so I went with really large scales in the middle of the belly, and smaller ones at the sides.
It looks more like a fish then than a snake, but can pass for either.

Wow that's good to know about scales actually being that way in nature on fish and snakes! So I guess my tuning into the still voice of the subconscious to visualize my project is paying off. Its turning out in sync with nature.

Oh, hey, Pearl.
Be careful taking the whole tail up to the underbust. I had stevi do that for me, and I couldn't get my tail on. I had to cut it way, way down. Do a muslin of fabric that stretches the same amount as your silicone scale sheet, and try it on. Then you'll know if you can do that, with those bodacious curves of yours.

Ugh!!! My bustier just came in the mail and the waist is too big! I got a 38G. The boob part fits but the waist is too loose. It does not pull me in at all. In fact it swims loosely around my tummy with a lot of gap. So I have to take it in :(

well I made my bustier smaller in the waist with no problem. Now I am just waiting on the sequin to come and I will make a mold of the skin/scales :)

After taking a rest, I am back at my project before classes start. I will continue my artistry in my spare time after I start classes.
I finished the scale sheet as well as the scaling for the merbustier. I will purchase casting medium tomorrow and hopefully finish my casting of both tomorrow as well.

If I didn't know how difficult it is, I'd be tempted to try something myself (been dissatisfied with the performance of my cloth tails lately).

Will you eventually put a monofin inside your flukes?
That would make it much easier to swim.

Thanks Caltuna! Yes I am making a custom monofin similar to the Competitor for the flukes but made to fit the shape of the fluke. I am keeping them streamline and taking advice from Raina and making the monofin cover most of the fluke except the thin strips on the ends. This way the majority of it will be rigid and swimmable.
