Hi! My name is Moonlight (so I was named at "home" in Black Rock City at Burning Man...), and while I'm new to actually having a tail and such, I've always been a mermaid at heart! I'm currently in the scrounging-together-materials phase of making my first tail - It's not technically going to be a swimmable one, due to the materials at hand (I moved into a house where I inherited HEAPS of vintage crafting supplies, including tons of fabric and an obscene amount of shells). My first tail will be a skirt, but since I'm an experienced crafter/seamstress, It's going to be one heck of a skirt-tail! I happened to find some holographic spandex-type fabric with a lovely gold/copper scale print, and tons of fluke fabric!

About me... I make stuff. No, seriously. Everything I can get my hands on the materials/tools for, I doo eet! Knit, sew, crochet, make jewelery making of all types except metalworking (yet), I design most of my own knit/crochet/sewing patterns, and I'm preparing to start selling my patterns as well as my crafts. Leatherworking (I make some super-realistic animal ears), woodworking, dreadlocking, funky hair dying, spinning/dyeing my own yarn, weaving...

I'm also really into anything Victorian/Renaissance/Tudor/Roccoco/Japanese. And musicals, reading, and I really miss writing but it leaves so little time for being productive (a.k.a. crafting). I also love to sing! My favorite instruments are the carillon (check out Cast in Bronze! He's my good friend.), theramin, violin, and poseidophones and hydraulophones. I don't play any of these instruments, seeing as how I never really learned to read music, despite many years of contest/performance choir. I do miss my Djembe drum Nathaniel, though... That I can "play" (if by "play" you mean make noise in a somewhat pleasing manner, without adhering to any kind of actual beat).

I hoop dance and poi, and of course I make super-awesome custom versions of both! Because until I make enough money to drop on what I really want (what I can't make at home), I take what I have and make the most super-awesome of it!

...Erm, sorry for the long introduction... It's been AGES since I "got serious" with a message board, but after finding the Mernetwork yesterday and realizing what I was missing out on, I made an account and actually put some info in there! I haven't done message boards in a really long time! So be gentle... :P

Welcome, good to have you!

I see you have looots of hobbies and interests :)
I'm similar, and I end up having a hard time deciding which one I should pursue (if writing, no time for painting/singing/playing instruments..., etc)
But it's all good, you can never be possibly bored having many interests :D

Welcome Moonlight!

You are gonna love it here. We are all crafters in some fashion! I am so envious of the stash of fabrics you found, as I am a fabri-holic myself. I also do my own patterns, work in lots of media, but sewing and tailoring are my forté. I've made, swum in, and enjoyed my fabric tails since the early '70's. Have fun here... you WiLL get the bug to sew a tail, and it will be awesome, I'm sure.

Glad you found us!

Well thank you everyone! Mernetwork seems to be full of awesome people :) And I'm so glad to see that there are other people like me who have way too many hobbies!

@Caltuna: Heehee, you're right! I'm rarely bored, because if I'm not making something, I'm either researching how to make things (such as Victorian-era cosmetics that I can make with materials bought with food stamps, or ancient dying arts, or mermaid tails), or researching history or whatever strikes my fancy... I guess you could say I have a case of epistemophilia!

@MerMarla: Wow, I'm so in awe of your experience! I feel like a little guppy in comparison... It must be wonderful to have so many experiences of swimming in a tail! And the stash is wonderful - Fabric, trim, lace, zippers, buttons... Most vintage, all they needed was a good washing! Oh, believe me, I have the bug to make several tails! I've been going through the stash looking for fabrics I can use for "dry" tails - nothing really available for swimmable tails, unfortunately - mostly stretch velvet, some random garment fabric, and some of that weird textured heavy polyester material (which I'm going to test for breathability and such for a tail). My bf laughs when he walks in the room and I'm on the floor doing "mermaid legs" and holding pieces of fabric this way and that way! I have plans to make at least one "skirt" style (but still hopefully fairly realistic) tail, and perhaps three full "dry" tails as well. I really need to get my sewing machine up and running!

@Golden Pearl: Haha, yeah, when I was younger, I would have thought the older me was crazy for getting into so many things... it's a burden sometimes, because I'll make plans for a new craft, maybe start it, then not want to finish it because I learned something new, or my hands are tired of doing the same motions! :P And yes, some of them are pretty exciting, like learning poi means I can finally get into fire poi/fire dancing - which just last year, even after being exposed to it for a few years (and really loving watching others perform), I still wouldn't ever do fire dancing/hooping, especially because as many times as I tried, I just couldn't get poi or contact juggling down. Turns out all I needed was to have someone help me a bit, instead of trying to learn it online (some things, I just need someone to give me some guidance, lol). Then, other things I think are dull but necessary, such as making home remedies...

Poseidon bless the internet, fountain of knowledge!
