Hello. I've always loved mermaids and I made my first lycra mermaid tail when I was 8. I've always wanted to be a real mermaid and wanted a silicone mermaid tail. Finally I've decided to actually make one myself, and it's been an exciting process so far! I'm not secretive, so if I find any tips on tricks I will definitely share them or try to answer as many questions as possible. I will also be most likely asking many questions myself:) Anyways, I wanted to share what I've completed so far.
This is my H20 style fluke. I used monster maker's clay. And behind that is my scale sheet which I may redo due to the craft foam (1mm) not rising enough to allow that awesome scale effect.
12285
Here is a test of my scales. They came out pretty good, but my scales won't be thick enough. I used Shell Shock liquid plastic. My suggestion is to use a coat of acrylic spray, and then apply Mann's Ease Release 200. Let that dry for about 20-30 minutes, and then right before you add your Shell Shock apply a layer of Vaseline. I've seen many people have trouble because the foam sticks to the Shell Shock. To avoid that, I took my Shell Shock of the foam scales before it fully cured. Be careful doing this though, and wait until it's in a hard enough stage. You don't have to do this, but it definitely worked for me. For example, in this pic, the scales aren't fully cured yet.
12286
This is a miniature fluke mold I tested with Shell Shock. I applied Ease Release 200 and Vaseline as release agents. I haven't cleaned it yet so there is still Monster Maker's Clay in the detail.
12288
That's basically all my process so far. I have just ordered a trial size of Dragon Skin 10 Medium to test out my molds. As for my new scale sheet, instead of punching out thousands of circles, I just bought 20 packs of 1 1/2 inch. diameter sticky back soccer balls. http://www.craftsuppliesforless.com/...ckerpacks.html (http://www.craftsuppliesforless.com/kidscraftsupplies_foamiesstickerpacks.html) this is the page I ordered them from. I will keep everyone updated on my process. As for the design, I'm not completely copying the H2o style. Only for the fluke will I be using the same format. As for the colors, I plan on using a yellow, green, sea foam, aqua, Ice blue, and sea blue. I find this experience to be a lot of fun, and even though I am only 12 years old, I know I have the determination and passion to push myself until I accomplish my goal. :) :) :) I'll update as much as I can.

It might not change Jazz ;) I am 27 and only recently, my own dad stopped saying, "you know mermaids aren't real, right?" hehe. But once I got my baby sister into the business (she's just a little older than you) he started to understand and now he brags that his daughters are mermaids!

Daily Update: Poured the first layer of ShellShock on my fluke and I'm waiting for it to dry until I add my second. I coated the whole thing in Vaseline, then sprayed Mann's Ease Release 200. When adding layers, you want to add the second, third, and so on layer any time between the pot life (working time) and the full cure time at least for ShellShock and DragonSkin. Here's a picture of what it looks like at the moment.

Hi jazz!!
This is just amazing!! I'm so impressed that you're so young and so talented. Your fluke sculpture is incredible and looks just like the H2o fluke.
I didn't do a dirty casting with silicone and I don't think it's necessary. I just cleaned out my mold with a blow dryer and q tips (I used monster makers clay too). I cleaned it this morning and poured silicone in this afternoon. I used manns ease release on the mold before pouring the silicone.
I can't wait to see how your tail turns out! If I can help you in any way let me know!
What paint are you using? I'm using pearl ex by jacquard but I'm wondering what else would work well.
jazz2453
07-06-2013, 07:52 PM
Thanks Jessica!!! As for the paints I found these cheap pigments on a site called mouldlife which I may consider and then Ill mix that with transclucent silicone. The paints you used sound much better though and have more color choices. As for the silicone to mix the paint with, are u just using dragon skin or something more transclucent?
Jessica
07-06-2013, 10:11 PM
I mixed my paint with dragonskin and it worked fine. I seem to remember someone posting to mix the powdered paint with part b first and the mix with part a. I just had some left over after I poured my fluke so I just threw paint in after it was already mixed. It cured just fine and I didn't have any issues.

Daily Update: I have a mold box for the scales. I'm using cardboard which I'm pretty sure will work if I coat the sides and whole thing in Vaseline. I also think I'm going to use Ultracal 30 like Mermaid Star for my mold. If anyone has a better option then please help. Thanks:)
Jessica
07-07-2013, 06:39 PM
Hi Jazz,
cardboard can work well for a base for your scale sheet as long as it is pretty flat. I couldn't find a piece big enough so I just used 3 sheets of posterboard taped together for mine.
Ive never used ultracal 30 before, but Star's tail turned out amazing.
Have you seen Mermaid Claire's mold? It's flexible and it looks perfect! I might try her method next time I make a scale sheet. For now I'm still trying to salvage the one I have but it's a tedious process!

I'm loving the H2O style fluke! I turn on that show all the time when I'm doing different cleaning chores and stuff like that to have some background noise and of course to just admire those beautiful tails! Your sculpting skills are way awesome! Keep up the good work! I hope all of my stuff comes out that great!
Hey Jazz, thank you for the inspiration <3
Is the base you sculpted your fluke on cardboard as well? If so, the shell shock didn't have issues releasing from it (with appropriate mold release of course)?
jazz2453
07-08-2013, 10:55 AM
Thanks guys:) @Taz, I applied vaseline around the fluke so the shell shock would easily release, and I slightly removed the edges before it fully cured just to make sure. I then flipped over the mold, and peeled the clay out.
Also....I ordered my DRAGONSKIN! I'm so excited:):) I'm also just going to test out ultracal 30 for the scale mold, because Star's tail came out great! I also got it for really cheap, and I think fiberglass resin would eat up the foam. @Jessica- I checked out the Urethane rubber she used and it seemed great, but was just a little expensive.

wear a mask for the dust with the ultracal 30 and do not let it touch your skin at all. Maybe get someone who is really strong to help you mix it up. You are doing a great job!

I can't wait to see how your mold turns out! I spent about $130 on shell shock with shipping. How much did the ultra cal cost? I'd love to make more fluke molds but don't want to spend a ton considering how much the dragonskin costs.
golden pearl is right about protecting your skin. I've never worked with ultra cal, but you do not want to get shell shock or uncured silicone on your skin. I learned this the hard way and now I wear an old lab coat and vinyl gloves(not latex) every time. Just a tip....if you get uncured dragonskin on your hands use paper towels to remove it. Soap and water won't take it off ( the water just beads on top of the silicone) but you can rub it off with paper towels. You also can just peel it off after it cures....but I didn't want to sit around with gooey hands for a few hours!
Just a few questions if you don't mind....
what monofin are you using?
how big is your fluke?
Good luck!! This is so much fun watching your progress!
jazz2453
07-08-2013, 12:43 PM
@Jessica- Ultracal 30 only cost me $27.00! Yea I use vinyl gloves too.
I'm using a finis foil, and my fluke is about 45in across and 30in up and down. My ends will have a flowing effect.

How much were they, Ms Jazz?
jazz2453
07-08-2013, 05:32 PM
Well I ordered 20 packs which is 1,100 scales, but it's looking as if that was too much (I'm pretty short). It cost $60. My first scale sheet cost around $80 because I got 2 punches, 2 packs of 2mm craft foam, and 2 packs of 1mm craft foam. It's all trial and error though, so I'm not worried. And I'm really happy with the way the scales are now.

Daily Update- Scale sheet is done! It looks really good, and the scales really give that rising effect. I only used 12 of the 20 packs I ordered, but I'm also short. I highly suggest buying foam soccer balls if you are lazy like me:p Also, the silicone and paint and other stuff is on the way:)

Are you going to put walls around your scale sheet so you can pour a solid piece of silicone, or are you going to brush on one layer at a time?
jazz2453
07-09-2013, 03:35 PM
@Memaid Dottie- I have a box with walls in which I will place the sheet of cardboard where the foam is attached to inside the box. The box I got from BJ's had holes in the bottom so this was my other option.

Nice idea with the pre cut soccer ball shapes!
I noticed that you have at least one place where the shapes overlap. You may want to go back in and fill any gaps with something so that the mold material won't get in between the scales and get messy. I used cardboard ovals for my scales, so I just filled in my gaps with more glue. I also sealed my scales to make sure nothing could get in.
You look to be doing great so far, keep it up!
Mermaid Dottie
07-09-2013, 07:06 PM
I actually think she'll be okay. You mean that spot in the middle of the first picture, right? Where one soccer ball is overlapping the other? It doesn't look like there's much of a hole there, so I think maybe the most she'll get is a 'mole' in her scales.
Paint it brown, like a freckle!

ShyMer
07-09-2013, 11:24 PM
It's more for the mold itself that I would want to fill any loose bits in, because you don't want any undercuts. It would end up being a piece that would stick up off the mold and maybe have to be snapped off. I might also expect to see it snap off while you're pulling your first cast from the mold, depending on how fragile it is, and potentially make casting a little harder. Of course that may not happen at all. It's just something I know from making molds.
Mermaid Caspiana
07-09-2013, 11:25 PM
Can you please explain the whole process thoroughly about making a whole mold casting thing to be able to pour the silicone in the mold. Thanks! :)
jazz2453
07-09-2013, 11:37 PM
Yea @shymer I'm fully aware of undercuts based on different tests an stuff that I read, and I rearranged my scales a bit and I filled in the little gaps with tiny balls of clay.
ShyMer
07-09-2013, 11:46 PM
Oh, that oil based clay, right? That might work nicely. I'm just trying to make sure you understand what I mean, by the way. Sorry if I pester too much :p
I'm impressed with the amount of research you've done for this project. Have you done anything like this before?
jazz2453
07-09-2013, 11:53 PM
No I fully support it, and I hope you can continue to give me as many tips as possible along the way. I've never done anything like this. I've read many of these forums and that's basically it. I've also asked many questions to Smooth-on, Monster Makers, and other SPFX sites.
jazz2453
07-10-2013, 09:57 AM
@Mermaid Nerin
Making a mold of your fluke-(This is what I did) Honestly when it comes to making molds it's different for everyone depending on what material you use. In this case, I made a sculpt out of Monster Maker's clay. The hardest part was smoothing out the clay. I bought some clay tools (which you can find at any art store) and I used a paint scraper razor. I melted the clay with a blowdryer then lightly used the razor and tools to level and smooth the clay. Once that was done I added the detail. Once your satisfied with your sculpt, you make a mold wall. More clay is the best option, but I ran out of clay so a cardboard box was fine. You will need vinyl gloves for this process (*DO NOT GET SHELL SHOCK ON YOUR SKIN, IT WILL BURN.) I applied Vaseline (You don't need it, but it's a nice if you want an easy release) all over the clay and around the side of the clay (so the edges would release). I then sprayed Mann's Ease Release 200. I waited 30 minutes for it to dry, the applied my first layer of Shell Shock. The mix ratio is 1a:4b by volume, so I applied 1/2 cup of part A (Shell shock has 2 parts) and 2 cups of part B. Shell shock has an 8 minute pot life, if you get slow, so you need to work FAST! Mix the parts together for 30 seconds or until one solid color. Pour it on and use a paintbrush to paint the detail. Apply all over your surface. Let that dry for about 30 minutes. Begin mixing another batch. This time I used 1/4 cup A and 1 cup B. Same process of applying. Let it dry for 30 minutes. Apply another layer of your desired amount. And continue this process until your mold is thick enough. I applied about 5 layers. *WAIT for it to dry for 5 hours until you demold. For the the edges on the cardboard, I used a putty knife to scrape underneath so they wouldn't stick to the cardboard. I waited 2 hours until I did this. DO NOT release anymore of the Shell Shock until it's fully cured.
Why not to lift it too early-This is where I got stupid…-_- I become too anxious, and lifted a small piece of the Shell Shock about 2 hours and 30 minutes into drying. The corner piece of the fluke snapped off the the rest of the mold. My heart stopped, and I thought it was over. Once it was 5 hours, I flipped the fluke over and peeled the clay out CAREFULLY. It easily came out and I was just left with tiny pieces of clay stuck to the detail. I rearranged the broken pieces into there place and glued them together. I then filled in the crack with clay. It now looks fine and you can't tell that it cracked because the clay is leveled with the mold, but it was just a scary experience. If I told have any peculiar marks I'm pretty sure they will be so faint that the paint with easily cover them. Anyways so once it's fully cured it's simple to release it. You can carefully use your finger to release the edges and then lift, or flip the mold over and peel the clay out. Anyway is fine, it's pretty easy. You can then scrub with a tooth brush and let it sit in hot water, or use a blowdryer and a q-tip/ dental pick/ tooth pick/ other and just try to get out as much clay as possible. And YAY! You have a fluke mold that is ready for silicone casting.
I haven't molded my scales yet but I write a detailed process/tutorial once I'm finished. I'm pretty sure you know that it starts out by making a model with any material (clay, seeds, craft foam) and then applying your material over them.
There are many different ways with different materials but this is one option.

Did you try mixing the pigments together to see what effects you could get? You might be able to mix that one green to make a nice olive under color, for example.
Also I guess you could experiment with different concentrations of pigment in the silicone, right? It should be interesting to know how much pigment you could put in before it weakened the material.
From your tests it looks like it make for some interesting effects!

Yes its a few inches longer then the length of my belly button to my toes (when I'm on my tippy toes).
Awesome, that was another question I had.
Do you have any thoughts on how you want to do your seams? I also was going to suggest that you not cast the whole scale sheet, but just for your measurements, that way you won't have a whole bunch of wasted scales ( and expensive silicone) that you cut off. When I cast my latex, I did the whole sheet, and ended up with a lot wasted when I got off the excess. Does that make sense? I can draw you an image if you like.
jazz2453
07-10-2013, 09:02 PM
No I understand. I may consider that. It's just that I was planning on making a mold of the whole box. Not just the sheet.

07-10-2013, 09:08 PM
Wow...this is all so amazing!! For one mer to another im proud of you for sticking through it! Curiousity as to the pigments you chose. Like why not go with siglc pig or ignite? What is it about jacquard that made you chise the powder over the gels?
jazz2453
07-10-2013, 09:13 PM
It was suggested to me by Mermaid Jessica, and the colors were really beautiful:) Also I've read that powder pigments work better for silicone. Silicone pigments are fine too, they are just more expensive.

07-10-2013, 11:17 PM
Lol it's just an idea:) it might help with blending your seams because the edges would be thinner. I don't know if the silicone is thick enough to do this, though. It might be too runny. Good luck in any case!

I applied Vaseline (You don't need it, but it's a nice if you want an easy release) all over the clay and around the side of the clay (so the edges would release).
There are many different ways with different materials but this is one option.
thanks so much! And another question, it may be stupid but I want to make sure I get it before even thinking about making one for myself. So, when you have the fluke done to make the mold you pt it in say a cardboard box and fill the box with shell shock. And when you take the clay out... You Jhabvala your mold?! :) seems easy. Well in making tail standards. Lol

Loving the progress so far! So I read that the Jacquard's Powder Pigments work well in silicone, has anyone ever tested them in latex? I know silicone is clear so it might work much better in silicone, however, a thin thin layer of latex laid down and then the powder worked into that layer might be nice?
jazz2453
07-11-2013, 09:28 AM
@Mermaid Nerin. You should build a wall of clay about 2 in away from the sculpt so you don't waste Shell Shock. I was careful and painted the shell shock on so that it wouldn't run to far on the sides of the sculpt. You don't have to fill the whole box. If you look at the picture on the 1st page of the layer applied, you will see what I mean.

Lol yea:) Everything is here! I tried out my airbrush using dragonskin mixed with pigments and I was not happy. Obviously it's too thick for the airbrush, so I watered it down. It didn't work. I'm not sure why. I then tried mineral spirits (a paint thinner) and it worked in thinning it. But when I sprayed the airbrush it didn't have the right color, and didn't come out well. Does anyone have suggestions?

Can you post pictures of the color of your test and describe how it's different from what you wanted?
jazz2453
07-12-2013, 09:53 PM
When I sprayed aqua/turquoise it came out green. I believe it's because of the yellow color, yellow+blue=green. But I also had a really hard time thinning it, and I'm not sure if mineral spirits work with silicone. Most of the paint cam off. I still need to test it in water.
12472
Also the green didn't come out the way I wanted and when I mixed yellow it came out like slime.

If you have any silicone left, you could pour some on a flat surface and wait for it to cure, After it cures you could glue it it between the gap (with more silicone). But make sure its thick enough.

Wow you're only 12! I'm two years older and I can't sculpt like that lol. I think it would work but make sure the silicone is thick enough and strong enough. After you secure the strip in place you could even put silicone over it to hide the seams and make it stronger. Your tail looks great so far! Good luck! :D
Mermaid Cascada
07-13-2013, 02:26 PM
As for the paints maybe try mixing less silicone in the paint if your going to airbrush or maybe try the paint by itself. I've not painte silicone yet so I'm not really sure if I can help with this lol. I guess it's something to try. Good luck!
Jessica
07-13-2013, 05:09 PM
This is coming along so well and your fluke looks amazing!!!!
If you don't want scales coming down the side of your fluke, I would make a strip like Cascada said. I've been experimenting with painting with silicone(so much fun!) and the silicone smoothes itself out when you paint it on with a paintbrush. I had a test patch of scales that were too thin...I had tiny holes in between them...but when I painted them I just added a little extra where it was thin and now the scales are the perfect thickness.
Basically if you add the strip you shouldn't be able to tell after you paint it. Silicone becomes seamless if you paint over it with a thick enough layer and it looks like it was always one piece.
Good luck!! It's so exciting to see how quickly you're getting this done!

Great job! Your scale test came out perfect! How do you like ultra cal vs shell shock?
Your teeny silicone fluke is so cute...you should make it into a silicone Barbie tail. :) my kids love playing with the leftover silicone scraps...I can only imagine how much they would love a real Barbie tail! I might have to make them one if I have any silicone leftover.

jazz2453
07-14-2013, 11:15 PM
Ultracal 30 was so simple to work with. You simply mix it up with water until the right consistency and pour it on. Within 30 min it heats up and sets as hard as a rock. It also didn't make a mess like the shell shock did. I was also unhappy with my test mold because there are millions of teeny air bubbles. Probably because I didn't seal the test model and foam is porous. Also are you using an airbrush to paint your tail? If so, what kind, and how do you get the color to actually process through the airbrush, it's always so thick. And do you know if the fluke takes up more silicone, or the scales?
Jessica
07-14-2013, 11:54 PM
I'm not using an airbrush. Hand painting is working really well though and you can fix imperfections in the silicone as you paint. I haven't poured my scale sheets yet ( I'm still scraping bits of foam out) but I know that my sheets will take more silicone than my fluke. I used about 6 cups (3a-3b) for each fluke half. It's a little thin so I will probably add a little extra to the back around the monofin. In any case I'm taller than you (5'6") and my scale sheet is longer so I can cover my feet (my fluke starts at my toes). Your fluke looked thin like mine so I would assume that your scale sheet would take up a little more than your fluke. If you want to know exactly how much silicone to measure out you can fill your mold with water(measure as you fill) and divide the amount by half for part a and part b.
good luck!

How thick did you cast your sheet? One of my scale tests came out very thin in between the scales and with a few tiny holes. When I painted it though it came out perfect so I trying to figure out how thick I should cast the sheet. Any tips?

You may want to make it a little tighter than your cast so it's not baggy when you wear it in the water. Remember that you compress some in the water, so even if it feels like it fits okay out of the water, it'll be loose when you swim.
The cool thing about silicone is that it stretches so nicely anyway, so you can get away with that more than with latex:)

Jazz, do you mind me asking (I'm not sure if you've already said!) how many gallons of Dragonskin did you purchase? :) I know you are short so you probably didn't need to use a giant amount, but how far did the gallons go for you? Do you have much left over? :) Thank you!
jazz2453
07-21-2013, 07:47 PM
I ordered 4 gallons or 2 one gallon orders. I have half a gallon left. I used a lot for my fluke. 2 full gallons!! I used too much and my fluke is really thick but I still love it! If you want to know the amount to use Measure the volume of the mold by using water

Mermaid Oshun
07-21-2013, 08:09 PM
so it weighs about 70 pounds?
jazz2453
07-21-2013, 08:24 PM
No. It weighs about 20-30 pounds (with scales). I bought 2 orders of 183.72 of dragonskin medium 10. One order = 2 gallons (part a +part b). For the first half of the fluke I used half of part A and half of part B (= 1 gallon). Same goes for the second half (2 gallons). I used 1/4 gallon of silicone of part A and part B for the first sheet of scales (1/2 gallon). And same for the second sheet (1 gallon for the scales). I used 3 gallons of silicone. I also used about 1/2 of silicone for tests and seaming and fixing. I also bought a trial size silicone just in case. The amount of silicone used is different for every tail. I ended up sculpting my clay on top of my monofin which used up more clay, and made my fluke mold much deeper. This lead me to the thought where I decided I had to fill the entire mold with silicone. Next time I will trace my monofin and symmetrical fluke pattern on a piece of wood or cardboard so I don't use up more clay, and so that I don't eventually use up tons of silicone. My fluke is super heavy but it's nice in light in the water so I'm not concerned.

Hey, Jazz this looks AMAZING. I look forward to checking your progress every week! I just had a couple questions. Do you think you could get away without using the ease release when using ultra cal and just use the Vaseline as a release agent? Also, in your opinion do you think that using the ultra cal on the fluke would be just as good as using the shell shock. Sorry for asking so many questions, shell shock just costs so much and if I can cut corners I will. :3 Lol
Trident True
07-25-2013, 02:20 AM
MermaidenMolly i may beable to answer from my experience. vasseline does work as a realease agent i used it on my clay piece then poured silicone over it and it came out just fine. in regards to ultra cal its a cement right? i don't think we can purchase this is Aus. You would need to place more vasseline in the mould before you pour your silicone in as it may stick to it. i read on the forum that someone used shell shock and it crumbled and fell to bits when it was demolded. im currenty trying out on a prototype flipper. expanding foam. will see how it turns out.. good luck.
jazz2453
07-25-2013, 03:54 PM
I applied acrylic spray to seal the scales, then coated vaseline. and then sprayed Ease Release and waited 20-30 min for it to dry. You can also use other plasters and materials as well. Fiberglass resin may also work. You just have to test out different materials.
After working with my friend who does special effects masks I found that Pam cooking spray is the best release agent. It doesn't fill in details the way vasoline does so your mold is more detailed and also it comes off smoother and more cleanly.

hi jazz!
i have a question for you. how can we glue the monofin in the dragonskin? im making a tail myself in silicone and ive heard and read that you have to glue the monofin in the silicone. can you help me? thanks!
jazz2453
07-25-2013, 09:53 PM
It depends what monofin ur using. I'm using a finis foil which is made or rubber so it doesn't stick to the dragon skin. There is a thread in tail making questions with more detail then I can give. I'd suggest u check there.

wow amazing! Congrats Jazz!!! it looks fin-tastic. It's still a bit see through, but I think you can thin some silicone down, mix it with the pigments and paint it on to be darker? Maybe ask some of the other tail makers or better yet call the silicone people! I wish I made tails so I could better put it into words. I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS WAS YOUR FIRST FULL ATTEMPT OF SILICONE. so freaking proud of you girl~~!~ <3

Thanks guys:) It really means a lot to me!<3
I just finished painting! WOOT! The tail is done! I repainted the front and made the the green color cleaner. I also painted the whole back this morning. I recommend using a spray gun to cover the most area of your tail. For little details I would say to use an airbrush.
I won't be able to swim in it until Tues or Wed, because my friend (who has an underwater camera) is going on vacation.
I will post pictures of the finished product in a little. Also my seams are not as noticeable!

http://www.smooth-on.com/index.php?cPath=1369 This is a viscosity chart. As it says, silicone is a viscosity of 14,000-40,000 centipoise. Water is 1-3 centipoise. For each color/layer of paint I mixed 2 tbsp of part A and 2 tbsp of part B. Before you add part A, mix your desired pigments into B. I used pearl ex powder pigments. I mixed a lot to really get a bright metallic color. Next you thin down your silicone/paint mixture with toluene, xylene, or naphtha. Keep adding until it is very thin and liquified. I'd say my mixture was about 50 centipoise.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=29QgZVEhETo That is a video of thinning down psycho paint with toluene. It gives you the right idea though. Its pretty simple after that. You just have to spray!
Here is a video of painting silicone: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BzKZzGjKCbI They used naphtha to thin it down which is what I used (you can get it at home depot). I recommend using a spray gun for larger applications (like a tail) to cover more surface area quicker. For small details I would have and airbrush handy.
Cleaning process for spray gun:
This is really important because silicone cures, and you don't want to cure in your spray gun. Immediately after each paint session, run mineral spirits through your airbrush, this will help dissolve and clean anything. Also cover the tip (where the air comes out) with a paper towel and spray with the gun upside down so all the gunk comes out. Then run water through the gun and spray just to clean out any extra materials.
Hope this helps anyone.

Thanks everyone! Firemaid- It's actually a spray gun in which you can get at home depot or harbor freight. It works very well for covering a lot of surface area.

Finfolk productions use a spray gun, but probably use an airbrush for little details, and their tails are beautiful!
