I'm so excited for my little mermaid Emily! I have sent off Emily's design and colours to Finfolk. They have been very easy to talk to and have agreed to make the silicone tail a little thinner and to use a Oceanika merfin! :D
Emily's tail is now on the wait list until mid September which will give us plenty of time to save some money  Yay!

How exciting!

Not to divert too much or start drama, but I know you had ordered from FishButts for Emily a while ago, right? Just wondering if that ever got resolved?

No! I'm still waiting for my promised refund of $300! Not a happy customer :(
i have been waiting for my refund since Feb 2013! I know others have been waiting longer!!
But fingers crossed Emily will get a beautiful tail to wear for our Aussie summer from Dec to Feb/March :)

I think Emily is adorable! I'm way excited for you guys. What fluke style are you going with?
What does her design look like?

This is Emily's tail design using a Merbella template and I cannot draw on photoshop so I used shapes for the fins! LOL https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10152309380494119.1073741833.752184118&type=3

Yes, Finfolk are amazing and really great to work with! I still have to write my review of mine, but you can see pics of it on my facebook page (link in my signature). Took them just under three months to make mine, including the time to sculpt all the new custom molds! (Well, not 100% custom as they're now being used for new tails. I didn't want to pay extra to have all the fin and scale molds be used for only my tail. I'm happy that so many people love them now!)

That's more than likely true. It was a compliment. I like scary tails for guys.
I'm trying to talk my hubs into getting a tail, but he's more of a privateer than a merman.
We're not quite like Ben Musgrave and Maddie from Alveric's novel.

Both your tails are friggin' amazing! Every time Finfolk update with pictures I come alive a little, lol. :P Can't wait for them to start my tail in September. What dyou all think of this colour combo: deep jewel-hued purple, pale pearlescent pink, and gold? The Finfolk Team and I have dubbed that the Aphrodite Tail colour combi, and I hope it turns out well (I'm pretty sure it will). I'm just not sure if the colour combi is missing that extra little something something.

07-16-2013, 10:26 PM
That is most definitely the best merman tail I have ever seen, and probably my favorite dorsal as well. I think it looks so much more realistic than the ones that look like fringe (nothing against them, just not my preference). Did you find it difficult to put on with that dorsal? I know I advised you that the waist would be tight, but of course I probably have a much different hips/waist ratio than you :P which makes it harder for me to put mine on.

Christopher Chandler
07-16-2013, 10:45 PM
Theobromine - Thanks! It is actually very easy to put on. It swim very easy and the side and dorsal fin makes during flips and underwater rolls very easy. I have a net belt that I wear that keeps then back from allowing water to open it up when I flip or do a roll otherwise it stays nice and tight.

Theobromine
07-16-2013, 11:16 PM
Cool. Did you design the dorsal yourself? And how did you come up with the color scheme? I really like it.

I'm actually glad mine is as tight as it is, as much as it's difficult to put on. While netting belts do look cool, I like not having to wear one and still not having to worry about gapping.

..Okay. Slight amendment to my previous post.

I'm 100% not trying to make any enemies here, and I'm not saying names, but...
Guys, it is really NOT nice to try and ask tailmakers (or anybody, for that matter) to make you something for free, or at a large discount. There is absolutely no reason to justify this. So even if you're a celebrity, or you have something great you think you could offer the brand, or you're recently famous-- ...know that you will have to hop in the queue with everyone else, and pay the same fair price that everyone else pays. A LOT of hard work and cost goes into making exquisite tails, and it just isn't fair to the tailmakers to request something like that of them.

yeah I am blown away. It's not something I would buy and swim with because I don't think the general public who hire me would "get it" but as a collectors item or for photoshoots- if I had the money I'd be all over that haha. I contacted FinFolk people today and got answer literally in 5 minutes. I'm working on my design atm. I am unable to decide what I want because you can't fit 5 different flukes, 10 different extra fins or 100 different color combinations to one tail.. I've been waiting for this so long I feel kind of guilty now when I'm about to get what I want, like "neeh you don't deserve it, your not gonna be a mer after all and it's waste of money". Someone silence that voice in my head for me please!

Riiarin, tell your inner voice to go and drink a cup of saltwater. ;)
I used to have small doubts like that. It IS a lot of money, but think about it this way-- forty years from now, you're going to look back and think "ah, I used to be a MERMAID". That's quite something- it definitely isn't something the average person can say about their life! It'll really make these years special, I believe, and I also believe that Finfolk is a great choice of team to bring your tail to life.

Those are beautiful! I'm partial to the darker one. ;)

I chose my design based off the current neoprene tail I have. I love the pattern and decided to stick with it! It's black with warm, medium purple stripes from front to back with a gradient to a silver/gray belly. :)

Hey you lovely people who have swum in finfolk tail. What do you think about their basic monofin, finis trainer? Does it give you good propulsion or is a upgrade needed? They do offer competitor as upgrade. Thank you in advance!

Theobromine
09-07-2013, 12:27 PM
I'm so excited for everyone getting their tails! Abby and Bryn are really awesome, lovely people, I'm really happy Finfolk is getting so popular.

Riiarin, I wish I could answer your question but my tail has a Competitor and I haven't tried any of the ones with the Trainer. I did get to see and feel a couple of their Hawaii tails that have trainers in them though (especially the betta tail) and the size of the fin was actually bigger than I expected. It's mainly just a lot narrower than the Competitor, but that works well for certain fluke designs. I'm guessing it would propel you decently well, just not as powerfully as the Competitor because, well, because Competitor :P

Seriously though, the construction of the betta tail was AMAZING. They did something really innovative with the scales that makes the tail completely seamless and just gives the whole thing much more realism and depth. I don't know if I'm allowed to say exactly what they did, but it was super cool. I think they may offer it as an option (for extra $$) at some point in the future, though.

Mermaid Octavia
09-07-2013, 12:54 PM
Theo - for the seamless beta tail, do you think they do the same thing with the non-beta tail? I'd really like mine to be as seamless as possible.

And how soon after your deposit did you send them your measurements?

Theobromine
09-07-2013, 01:41 PM
I'm sure they could, it had everything to do with the scales and nothing to do with the betta-ness of it, but you really should ask them about it if you're interested in it :) I don't know if there's a time frame for it being available; as far as I know the betta tail is the only one they've tried that method on so far, and it's a lot more time-consuming than the regular way. I'm sure they would at least want to perfect the method first. Anyway, their regular seams are pretty good!

Mermaid Octavia
09-07-2013, 05:00 PM
And how long after you ordered did you send your measurements?

Theobromine
09-07-2013, 05:49 PM
Oh, right. Well, you could send your measurements at any point in the process, but I waited until right before they actually started working on my tail, because I was working out a lot and losing some weight. I'm sure they can work with you on that, though.

Mermaid Octavia

So, one of the things I love about my tail is how smoooooooooooooth it is. Like, they cast it really skillfully, so there's no lumpiness or imperfections of any kind on the scales or fins. The seams are really well done, too, as are the way the fins and fluke are attached. I've seen some other silicone tails where the texture just looks kinda...gritty....and there's smeariness where the seams are and where fins are attached and stuff. Not so with my tail, it's beautifully smooth to run your hands over and stands up to close inspection :)

(Except of course for those silly kids who feel it and then yell "that's just rubber! You're FAKE!!" Kids these days I tell you :P )
