Yes, I saw your post earlier about your new seahorses. I only have three tanks at the time, one being saltwater. I wish I could have seahorses, but, I guess I'll get them some time later on. Good luck with your breeding project!

I am a very amateur fish keeper, lol. I have a cute Betta named Benny and a ghost shrimp (I had 2 but one of them died, I think because they just don't live too long. I also had a mystery snail, but he died too... Not sure what killed him, actually. He was pretty big so he might have just been old. I don't know.)
They're adorable and very entertaining... To me anyway! Benny's favorite past time is flaring at himself in the reflection on the side of the tank. But not because he's aggressive - it's because of pure vanity I think. Lol!
I've had a fair few. We had a case of white spot go through and lost a lot of ours. Hubby was very sad that his Ghost Knife died :( so we're looking to re-stock in a few weeks

Do the betta and shrimp get a long?
I used to have snails(I now hate them with a passion), guppies (recent batch just died.out), had a betta a while ago who died, have a ghost shrimp, and just got a black orchid CT betta today.
I've had gold fish, koi and African Dwarf frogs in the past.

Growing up my mom always had tanks set up around the house. Now that i'm on my own, my husband and I have 9 tanks set up!
My tanks have tetras, danios, catfish, and I have a beta. My husbands tanks are full of cichlids and plecos. We have mbunas like peacocks and kenyi, but we also have lots of tangynikans like compressiceps and leleupi!199401994119942199431994419945

I'm a fishkeeper, but that's only because Persian New Years never seems the same without the fish on the haftsin, and I don't believe in releasing potentially invasive species into the wild or to their death after the celebrations are over. So, I guess me and my fish are in it for the long haul. Lol

I'm just setting up a 160 liter freshwater aquarium.
I'm planning to put some Coridorae and Xiphophorus Helleri in it.
(Sorry, I don't know the english names of these.)
So it's gonna be an Amazonas-themed aquarium.

Coridorae are Cory catfish and Xiphophorus Helleri are Swordtails. Very nice, we had a 29 gallon Amazon tank set up for a while, until the tank started to leak and we had to quickly move the fish into the 20 gallon tank. They're red tetras, cory cats, and hatchetfish. One of these days I need to caulk that thing with aquarium sealant and set it back up. I've also got another tank with 2 comet goldfish... They're really my favorite; they seem to have much more personality than most fish.

I currently keep freshwater fish. I've got a 10 gallon goldfish tank, a 5 gallon planted tank with platies, and a 3 gallon betta tank.
I'm also setting up a saltwater tank right now, but I'm waiting for it to cycle before adding anything to it... so maybe in 2-3 more weeks I'll have something in there :D

But now they need to go because in 2 months I am moving to Spain.
But i just can't find anyone who wants them.
I have a freshwater aquarium with a kissfish ( but he is already four year and a half so i don't think he soon goes to the fishworld ) now he is retired.

I work at a saltwater fish hatchery and have adopted some handicapped fish! I have a Black Ice clownfish, a jumbo orange clownfish, an indigo dotty back (periwinkle variety) and two emerald crabs! The clowns are missing their left eye and were going to be killed until I rescued them, and the indigo dotty back has a spinal problem so he has a cute little hunchback. I also have two zooanthid corals, an orange montipora, a frogspawn coral, and a duncan coral. You can see my nanocube here! 20675

This is 'Tatsu' which is an old Japanese word for dragon & he loves living amongst the cherry blossoms :)
LOVE the cherry blossoms! But I don't see a heater.. Bettas need heaters, their water needs to be at a steady 75-80º. Also while it's a decent size bowl, 2.5 gallons is really the minimum you should have a betta in- also 2.5 is the minimum you can heat a bowl or tank reliably and safely according to many fish keepers. Also if you do keep him in there, make sure you change the water enough! A bowl that small needs changed every other day.
Hope you aren't offended by my comments- there's a LOT of misinformation about how to take care of bettas and goldfish both. They both need a lot more room and basic care than any pet store would probably admit (none I've been in have so far). I blame them for making myths about the "ease" of betta and goldfish care.
Here are some great links on what bettas need :)

Well said, Iona! A lot of people (maybe even most) have no idea what they're getting into when they get a fish. There's lots of great information online about how to care for fish. Here's a great site for beginning goldfish keepers: http://www.kokosgoldfish.com/ (http://www.kokosgoldfish.com/) . And both novice and more experienced keepers can learn a lot from this site: http://www.goldfishkeepers.com/
Happy fishkeeping, everybody!

Thanks Galene! I wasn't sure what site to link to for good goldfish info, cause I haven't done that much research on them. I knew pretty much right off I wanted a betta ;) Which I do own one! I actually spent two months researching betta care before I got one, cause I'd heard from a lot of friends that pretty much any mainstream store (even the pamphlets at the chain stores) have misinformation that can be detrimental to a betta's health.
So this is Merlin:

He's in a 5 gallon with 50w heater and whisper filter. Honestly wish I'd gone for the 10 gallon once I saw how much he perked up- after I got him out of that horrid pet store cup and all warmed up in his tank, he was swimming all over the place all the time :) He's a grump though, haha! I joke that he's an old-man grumpy fish :P I change his decor weekly (when I change his water) so he doesn't get too bored, and the decor stays clean (dang friggin DIATOMS, urgh!).
Here's a game we like to play. He seems to enjoy it, and tries to see my hand coming and swim away before I can “boop” him :P

I have a fishie! Her name is Gill after a rather terrifying and horrid jumping accident when I was cleaning her tank. She's in a kindof small tank for now, I don't have the funds for a whole big system, but I try to keep it clean and with fresh water as best as I can. I think it's like 1.5 gallons? I used to keep her in a TINY bowl because people lie about betta care and once I got her in a bigger tank she grew and got all shiny and her fins got bigger, it was great. I hope to upgrade her to a bigger tank soon. Also I tried to feed her freeze dried bloodworms (I think that's what they are) and she refuses to eat them -_- she only goes for the pellets. Anyone know why that may be?
EDIT: I forgot the pic :)

It occurs to me that my fellow fishkeepers might like to know about this training kit: http://www.r2fishschool.com Years ago, when I first started training fish, I used this kit. It's a great way to interact with your fish and provide enrichment to make his/her life interesting. And it's fun!

First thing I can think of is try and break them into smaller pieces. A betta fish's stomach is about the same size as their eye, and the blood worms can be pretty big, so maybe the pieces need to be smaller.
Another thing they don't talk about in pet stores- bettas are notoriously picky eaters. I've read some on betta forums, and some owners have tried (and had to throw/give away) 6+ kinds of food before they found one their fishie would actually eat. Luckily Merlin will eat anything I give him most of the time. But yeah, some bettas just don't like certian kinds or brands of food. Blood worms are a great source of vitamins for them, so that's too bad that your fishie doesn't like them. But you can try brine shrimp, as well as betta flakes (not typical flakes) like Omega One's flakes (http://www.petco.com/product/116562/Omega-One-Betta-Buffet-Flakes-Betta-Food.aspx). Omega one, so I've heard and been told, is a good brand with decent nutrition- you can see from the link they have good ingredients.

Iona, when you gonna set up that 20 gallon tank!
Also, I find that the frozen bloodworms are better than the dried ones. They're really meaty and juicy and fishes love them (all my old bettas did, as well as most of my community fishes and African dwarf frogs when I had them). Also I don't really like feeding the freeze-dried ones because I worry about the fishes ingesting too much air when they eat the, (though you can soak them in water first).
I miss having my tanks...I'm still trying to convince my husband that it will be a great idea to move my old 29g community tank from my parents' house down to our new apartment. I'm guessing it would be a definite NO on the 90g with all my awesome catfish though :( *grumble*

I looove keeping fish.
After my rats pass away, I think I'm finally gonna get a huge tank.
But right now, I've got a 10g planted community with 5 harlequin rasboras, a betta fish, and four ghost shrimp.
I absolutely love Betta fish. I feel sad when they're in anything less than a 5gal tank. And I hate that chain pet stores spread misinformation about them. It's ridiculous.
As for ghost shrimp, I think earlier in this thread someone mentioned they have short lives? I recently found out they can live for two years or longer! This is the longest time I've had ghost shrimp (for a few months) but I think it's because my betta, Thorin, is very docile. He doesn't eat them lol
Anyway, axolotls... How hard are they to keep? I've always wanted some.
Mermaid Dana
07-18-2014, 10:49 AM
girlprince - Well I dont think it is hard. They just need the right water, but you can get test to see if the tank water is okay. The water must not be very hot, and for filters, they need a silent one, since they can stress them. There is a whole forum about them here with all info http://www.axolotl.org/
I love them so much and they are so sweet when you feed them. I change some water every day, feed them daily because they are still young. They need hiding places and small sand in the bottom or just a empty tank with glass bottom. But look at the site, they are lovely pets, and they for sure have personality :D

Oscars! Had to give them away when we moved 1000 miles, going to get more though. Tried other fish, the Oscars interact where the other fish only mix with each other.
The tank is a show tank, long and narrow 120 gallon. They don't like the way I arrange stuff, as soon as I get it arranged they put the stuff back the way they like it. Once my big one jumped up and bit my upper arm when just after he change it I tried to change the decor back.
They also like fishing. I have a tiny fishing pole, tie a piece of bacon on it and cast it in. The piece is big so they can only grab an end, but they play tugawar as long as your will too.
There are prettier, these are more fun. Besides they eat everybody else or at least try.

Iona, Merlin is beautiful! I have a soft spot for bettas too. I had one for years named Biggles. He was a larger betta and he would take 'naps' on his little plant.
