Mermaiding at the TRAIN Concert! (pics!)

Oh my goodness gracious, I went to the Train concert last night, and had THE best time in the world!

So here’s my story. Last Sunday, I performed at a birthday pool party for a cute little 4 year-old girl. The next morning, I got a post on my mermaid page from my aunt saying that they heard me mentioned on the radio! It turns out that one of the hosts from a local radio station was at the party and thought I was super cool! The next day, I got a Facebook message from the host herself, saying that Train would be playing the kick-off concert for their Mermaids of Alcatraz Tour in Virginia Beach. She asked if the station could hire me as their mermaid to sit in their tent at the entrance before the show and take pictures with fans. :jawdrop: Naturally, I said OF COURSE! They were super accommodating and gave my assistant and me lawn tickets (which were upgraded to real seats when the downpour came!), water park passes, AND backstage passes to meet the band before the concert!

So when we set up the tent, it was pretty much pouring rain. A bunch of fans came over in ponchos and rain jackets to take pictures with the mermaid.

After a little debate with security over the wagon, we were finally able to get into the venue and backstage to meet Train. They were super surprised when they saw me, and Pat was very excited. I got a “That’s the sh*t right there!” He even took his own phone out and got a picture of me!

After that, my lovely mertender Jordan wheeled me ALL OVER THE PLACE looking for the very elusive Mermaid Tent. When we finally found it, I signed up for the contest, got my picture taken, and earned some sweet freebies.

I then ran back to my car and “put my legs back on,” and went into the concert as a human. Buuuut not for long! During the break between Michael Franti and Train, I found out that I won the contest! I went to get my 6th row seats, and the guy asked me if I could put my tail back on when I go onstage for the “Mermaids” song. So Jordan and I trekked back out to my car to re-retrieve my tail and wagon. We got back to our seats just in time for Train’s opening number. I stealthily changed back into my tail a couple of songs before Mermaid. Jordan and I had to do a quick outfit switch-a-roo before I put on my tail (because you can't stealthily put on a tail while wearing a romper!).

As the song Mermaid started, I had FIVE burly security guards lift my wagon (with me in it) onstage. Jordan got to go onstage with me to wheel me around! I was front and center, and Pat Monahan (lead singer) pointed me out and said, “I’m pretty sure this one’s actually real!” When he was introducing the song, he gave me the microphone and said, “I want to know if mermaids can sing.” WHAAAAAT?!?! (Truth is, they can’t really. Haha.) So I sang the first line of the chorus, and there was no voice cracking, and I think I hit the notes, and the audience erupted, so I guess that means I didn’t butcher it! J

All the mermaids danced on stage for the whole song, and then at the end I was wheeled back to the edge of the stage, where my security guard friends picked me up again and helped me down! My assistant rolled me back to the bathroom. People followed me to get pictures with me! One of the security guards asked to get his picture with me, and I had a small line forming INSIDE the public bathroom for people to get their pictures with me! After I changed back into human clothes, my assistant and I went out and enjoyed the rest of the show! At the end, the band and the stage hands threw out their drumsticks and picks and set list, but a stage hand actually WALKED UP to my assistant and me and handed us autographed guitar picks! How lovely of him!

Before I left, I made sure to profusely thank the radio station, the security guards, and the Mermaids Tent guy for everything they did for me! What kind people they all are!

Walking back to my car, wagon in tow, Jordan and I heard a lot of “Hey, that’s the mermaid” comments. We talked to the other Train fans on the way out, and it was a grand ole time!

So in conclusion, this was a freaking incredible experience, and I never dreamed that it would be this much fun! I went from no ticket to lawn ticket to seats to 6th row, along with backstage and onstage passes! My assistant and I walked away with plenty of free merch (only paid for our t-shirts), and even more memories! Greatest night ever. Being a mermaid certainly has its perks!

Oh, but quick word of wisdom: If you are thinking about going in a real tail, ride in a wheelchair, not a wagon. Even though I was a mermaid, security almost didn't let the wagon into the concert. Yikes! But a wheelchair is much less suspicious, so i recommend that. Haha

I heard that Mermaid Marla is going to the concert in her tail. I can't wait to see pictures!

Train came to Indianapolis not too long ago and ordered a whole bunch of sushi and sashimi from the restaurant I work at. I didn't meet anyone, tho, and they only tipped 32 cents. lol
The cook was going crazy. Complete fanboy. :D

I followed in Hales bubbles and was contacted by a radio station in Charlotte for the Train concert tomorrow! SO PUMPED. I had just bought our tickets when they called so they bumped us up to VIP eeeee. Ok I have LOVED Train since I was a wee middle schooler listening to 'Meet Virginia'. 'Drops of Jupiter' was one of the first songs I learned on the piano. I'm besides myself with fangirlness to be meeting them tomorrow. Sure I do like the new songs but I'm hoping they play some old stuff, you just can't beat the classics <3
