Pool Swimming and hair?

Hi ya!

Apologies if this is the wrong place, I didn't really know where to put a question like this!

I'm relatively new to the forum, and the merworld, I guess! Recently, I've started going swimming a lot, at the local swimming pool, where the water is about 70% chlorine 25% people piss and 5% water

My question is, after I come out of the pool and shower, once my hair is dry it goes... crispy?

Sort of like when you put loads of hair spray in your hair, and it gets that crunchy feeling.

Has anyone else experienced this?

I was thinking it may be something to do with my hair colour, as I am a bottle blonde.

Glad to know I'm not the only one! (though sorry you are also having the issue!) I know there are a few 'swimmers' shampoos, but I'm not sure if they are very effective?

I am currently using Aussie Miracle Moist. I'll try leaving it on for longer, usually I just do a quick rinse! Also, do you shower as soon as you get out of the pool? I usually wait till I get home, my hair is usually air-dried for an hour or so before I shower. Have you ever used any swimmers shampoos?

Oh XD I was only joking, I am not sure what the levels are, but I'm sure it's not deadly! Just enough to sting your eyes a bit XD

I shower when I get back, sometimes not until later in the day (like today, as I plan to go swimming again). There are shampoos meant for dry hair, which I recommend and use regularly. I love Organix, it's a big pricey but the stuff works amazingly. Right now my hair is crunchy because I had my swim team practice, and I haven't showered, but I'll go swimming again later and shower after that and it'll be back to normal. :3

There are several things you can try to prevent the *crunchy* feel. Soak your hair in regular water before you go into the pool, that way the hair follicle is already saturated and will absorb less chlorine. It's best to wash the chlorine out as soon as possible. There are several brands of swimmer's shampoo and conditioner that I have heard are effective.

I use a clarifying shampoo to get all the chemicals out of the hair and to keep it from getting that strange green color. After being in chlorine, shower and use the clarifying shampoo, then wash with your regular shampoo and conditioner. I used to use Biolage's Remove-All, but I don't think they make that, anymore. Now, I use Paul Mitchell's Clarifying Shampoo Three. If I could afford it, I'd be using Eufora's Urgent Repair shampoo and their Hydrating Leave-In Conditioner. The Eufora products are absolute heaven for hair, but they're a bit on the pricey side.

Also, even if you want to wait till you're home to take a full shower/shampoo/condition, rinsing your hair right after you get out of the pool will do a lot for it. Just walk in and hose down before you even take your swimsuit off.

I tend to have crunchy hair as well. Like the others said, saturating the hair with non-chlorine water first helps a ton! I also take that opportunity to condition my hair (with more conditioner than I normally use) before entering the pool, and you have to really saturate hair with non-chlorine water, not just get it wet. I just use the showers at the pool usually, or the spray hoses some of them have.

Also, I feel ya on the chemically-treated hair, I love to dye my hair crazy colors (usually pink), which means I need to bleach to white first, so I get a lot of the same problems as bottle blondes. One of my major problems with crispy hair is the split ends from over-bleaching. Take the time to look at your ends, very slowly and closely. Having split (or bent, coiled, bubbled, whatever) ends in your hair definitely can invite more damage from chlorine and is usually what I find feels "crispy" about my hair. You do need to trim hair regularly to get off the damaged ends (also apparently the main source of tangles) - I trim my own using the "search-and-destroy" method, since I'm growing my hair and I am not about to let a lady at a salon cut off inches when I am perfectly capable of sitting around and chopping tiny bits of hair off - plus it keeps me from actually giving myself a haircut (which I'm infamous for) if I get to snip-snip ends every day :)
