View Full Version : Older Mers: Who's Over 30 Out There?!?!

~~So, I've noticed that this is a fairly young crowd overall here, and I'm just curious to know how many of us are 30 and over.~~

I've been crazy about mermaids and the ocean in general since I was a kid, as seems to be the case with many people here, but I didn't find out about Mernetwork and the serious mermaiding community until I signed up for the Sirens of the Deep Camp at Weeki Wachee. It is for women 30 and over, and I was just getting ready to turn 31 when I signed up. I'm 32 now.

I had a rough time turning 30...*shockingly* rougher than I anticipated esp. after having yoga training (aging is beautiful, age is nothing but a number, etc.) and being pretty positive about it until then. All of a sudden I felt I still had the feeling of being a kid with time slipping way too fast uncontrollably around me. Still feel that way.

Anyhow, signing up for Sirens was the first time I was excited to be over 30 :P It was also very inspiring to work with Weeki's "Former Mermaids" who performed there in the 60's and 70's and to see them still swimming and loving it.

So even though there seems to be the stereotypical image of mers being young (or ageless, immortal, etc), I know y'all are out there that are 30 and above - and yes, I know 30 is young relatively speaking, but it is also the physiological age in which the body begins to age and break down...technically the start of aging.

Perhaps some are "suffering" from Peter Pan syndrome...mermaiding as a way to bring youth with you or to keep your inner child alive...

...Or maybe not. Maybe some of you are embracing aging and mermaiding has nothing to do holding on to youth.

Obviously either way mermaiding can have a plethora of physical, spiritual, emotional/mental benefits that can either help us stay "younger" OR age gracefully...or both. I'd be interested to hear from more over you "Over 30's" about your age and what mermaiding means to you in that vein.

I'm ALMOST 30. I cognitively know that, but I'm still into cartoons, mermaids, fantasy, dinosaurs, etc. I'm 12 at heart.

I like the concept of "immortal"...lol! I certainly don't feel 38! Except early mornings before coffee...

I stopped counting (and celebrating my birthdays) after 15.
I thought that was the perfect age for me :D
Over 30 now, although I have a hard time believing/contemplating that.
Generally, I'm not too worried about aging though, because my family has great younger-looking genes :D

btw Kakarotte, just saw your tail is finished!
It's really beautiful, you look like a tropical fish.

I am almost 50 and I love staying young. I like a lot of exciting things I did not get to enjoy when I was a little girl. I was emancipated at 15 and started college at that time so I did not get the normal childhood. Instead I was working and paying my own rent at 15 while having to pass college courses at the same time. It feels great to enjoy a bit of fantasy at 50 that I missed out on at 15.

I'm 43, and other than being amazed I made it through my twenties and thirties, it means nothing to me.

Hi you youngster Mers! Squeee, ya'll are getting there! I'll be 61 in September! Still swimming and can hold my breath about 2 minutes, working my way back to at least 3 minutes! How about a thread title of "Older Mers over 60" LOL! Not old in my book! I have a friend still performing at Weeki, as a former, who is in her early 70's! I've been mermaiding for over 40 years! You all can do it, too!

I'll be 30 in December! :) I've loved mermaids since my parents took me to the cinema when I was 6 to watch The Little Mermaid! I've always loved fantasy things. Think I will always remain a big kid! :D

I like saying this:

I'm not a functioning adult. I just play one in real life ;D

Awesome to see all the responses!

And YES I know that being around 30 is quite young in the grand scheme of things going by the numbers, but I put "older" in the thread because you have to admit that the majority of mers on here are undoubtedly under thirty, which therefore makes anything over 30 "older" relatively speaking. "Over 30" is a huge spread of age, yes, and I love seeing the variety of ages who have responded here so far. So many people staying young at heart :)

I'm 32. Most days I can't believe that I'm an "adult." I have a two year old daughter and everything and I almost feel like I'm pulling a giant fast-one on the world. Still very much in my 20's, at heart, and no signs of slowing down! lol

I'm 30 going on 31 in November. It's not so scary yet. A couple of lines-but I usually get mistake for being between 16-22 though, lol. My novel has a HUGe 'you're-as-young-as-you-feel' theme running through it. Call it denial :)

Oh being 50 is not scary either. Not at all! When I go out I feel I look better than the 20 year olds

Because I act like one, look like one, or both?
Like I said in a similar thread somewhere: all mers are young at heart :)

I still can't get behind the word 'older'. :p

Yea, it's very relative, no?
Children think teenies are old.
Teenies think twenty-somethings are old.
And 80-year-olds think 60-year-olds are kiddies :D

kids.
Lol!

Mermaids has been playing a vital role through my youth and I tend to look back at those good times. I'll be turning 37 this coming December and I keep those beautiful memories alive! I'm currently looking forward a new mermaid tail with love and dedication! Thanks to all! MJC :)

I will be celebrating my 25th annual 29th this year! Very excited - a whole quarter century of being 29!! WOOHOOO!! Just started looking at mermaiding, I'm hoping it will be something that will be a bit kinder to my poor joints than running, plus I LOVE anything that gives me a chance to dress up in a beautiful outfit, and have a tail!

I love the "annual 29th" birthday thing, lol!

I definitely think mermaiding is great for anyone who has joint problems...that's one of many reasons I like it b/c I do have joint issues. Really most things in water are highly recommended for joint issues, and mermaiding in particular is a full-body workout without putting too much stress on one joint or the other. I think the only problem I have run into joint-wise is putting on tails (esp if you have wrist problems).

^^yup, lol, great idea.
I've been 15 for 18 years now I believe

Been living with joint aches (abd far more terrible things) for 10 years already, so if I really get old, it's not going to be any difference, thanks to lab 257 on Plum Island

Not quite there yet, but I will be 30 next year. I have been digging my heals in since I was 17. It isnt as bad as I would have thought, growing up. I don't feel my age and am happy to say that quite a few have told me that I dont look my age either. :)
