Howdy from Texas!

I'm Mary Marine, just wanted to introduce myself real quick! I'm a 23 year old female, college student, mall retail slave. I'm Wiccan and enjoy studying world religion, cultural anthropology, and mythology. I like camping, belly dance, pottery, playing Dungeons & Dragons with my friends, and reading fanfiction. Someday I would like to teach history or humanities.

Alright, enough of that real life stuff, now for the mermaid business!

When I was little I saw a silicone tail for sale in the Nieman Marcus Christmas catalog and I fell in love. It was $2000, which might as well have been $1,000,000 it was so far out of my reach.

Flash forward to a year ago when the mermaid mockumentary first aired. I hadn't seen it, but I read an article talking about it and the real life mermaid community, including the existence of tail makers. I did some shopping around and decided I needed a fabric tail like my life depended on it. I started saving money, but real life kept interfering (new car, college tuition, expensive pet chameleon, etc).

So here I am almost a year later with no tail. I bought Raina's book "Fishy Buisness" and have seen doing a lot of research on types of tails, materials, and tail makers. I've set some goals for myself and will soon be posting a journal on the forum chronicling my journey to become a mermaid by next spring.

Welcome to the community Mary! There are some really good tutorials and lots of info about making on in the Tailmaking section of the forum. That's where I learnt about making my first fabric tail. Hope you enjoy your time here.

Thanks Marlin and Sea Pearl! I'm not confident enough with a sewing machine to make my own tail and I'm a notorious procrastinator when it comes to craft projects, so I'll be starting with a commercial tail. Perhaps someday I'll make my own.

Hi, where in Texas do u live? I'm moving to San Antonio in January. I'm trying to see if there is anyone in the Mer Community who lives near there. It would be nice to know that there are at least a few people who love all things Mer that live around there lol. I also do belly dancing :) How great was Raina's book?! It's my new handbook lol. I personally want to get a tail made by Mermaid Raven of MerBella Studios Inc. But I have to wait until I can save up enough money to buy one. :)

I already have a monofin and I'm starting with a fabric tail until can afford a silicone one. Maybe we can eventually get all the Texas Mers to have a Bi-Annual trip to the Gulf :) That would be awesome. I have been doing a lot of research to see where the best lakes and rivers for swimming are. My goal is to find some nice places to swim where I don't have to worry about anything trying to eat me :) lol
