View Full Version : Journal: my quest to become a mermaid

Hi everyone! As I am new to the mer community I thought it would be a good idea to chronicle my journey to becoming a mermaid. Writing things down may help me stay focused on my goals since I have the bad habit of not finishing what I start, especially when it involves exercise! This way I can also get positive feedback and tips from your guys.
First, a little back ground information:
I learned about swimmable tails a year ago, but real life expenses meant I wasn't able to save up the money to buy one. Instead I bought Raina's book "Fishy Business," which has inspired me to start saving up again. I'm planning on buying a fabric tail (still deciding on the maker), but in the mean time I'm going to become a stronger swimmer and work on my dolphin kick.
I used to swim all the time as a kid, but now I'm pretty out of shape. I've gained some weight, not much, but enough to make me uncomfortable in my own skin. I have difficulty finding the motivation to exercise, but buying a mermaid tail is pretty dang good motivation! So I'm going to swim 2 or 3 times a week and after x number of months I'll reward myself with a fancy new tail.
So my goals are:
- Swim 2 or 3 times a week a half hour to an hour at a time so I can practice my dolphin kick.
- Loose weight and develop my leg and core muscles.
- Save enough money to buy a tail.
I may add more as I think of them, but those are the main points. I'll try to post regularly as I progress. Wish me luck guys!

Alright, first official entry!
To mark the beginning of my mermaid journey, last night I did a small ritual. I'm Wiccan and I wanted to give myself a magical boost, so to speak, in meeting my goals. The full moon has special meaning to Wiccans and since the moon causes the ocean tides I would think that it's special to mermaids, too.
First I marinated in the bathtub with some bath salts for a while. This was dual purpose, since water and salt are considered cleansing and purifying, but also symbolic of the ocean. If my goal is to become a mermaid, then immersing myself in the nearest body of water seemed like a good start, even if it was just my bathtub.
When I got out I turned my nightstand altar into a little mermaid shrine, complete with the mermaid statue I randomly bought several years back. I surrounded her with my shell collection and ocean related objects, like a small trident and a clay sea turtle I bought in Hawaii. My altar is under my window, so I opened the curtains and waited for the moon to move past the trees. In the mean time I lit some tea lights and sang a few chants I knew that involved water.

I didn't feel like doing a formal ritual, so I just sat under my window and enjoyed the ambiance of the evening. I have trouble focusing long enough to meditate, so I let my mind wander (mostly I thought about getting my tail and all the things I wanted to do once I had it!). It was very relaxing and I felt more confident about the starting my new swim routine.

Went swimming yesterday and today at the senior center pool. They have hours open to the public and it tends to be less crowded than the other pools, plus I can use my fins. Unfortunately, my fins are too small. I've had the same pair for a long time and while they worked just fine for the occasional trip to the pool or lake any seriously swimming is out of the question. I now have two lovely blisters on my big toes. Time to go fin shopping, though I don't think I'll be getting a monofin just yet.
Yesterday I swam for a total of 40 minutes with short breaks and a walk in the resistance pool in between. Today I hardly did any swimming, but I walked in the resistance pool for 45 minutes in 15 and 10 minute increments. I stretched before and after in the hot tub to keep my muscles warmed up. Not bad for just starting out!

Went swimming again today. I spent a total of 50 minutes doing laps and walking in the resistance pool, then spent another hour just enjoying the water. Still need new fins, the blisters from last week healed up but now I have a new one in the same spot.
After swimming I stopped by a craft store and bought a whale tail charm to turn into a necklace. I'll post pictures once it's done!
I've started learning some American Sign Language! While fleshing out (scaling out?) my "mersona" I decided that mermaids would have an underwater language that doesn't work out of water plus a hand sign language. I don't plan on becoming fluent, I just want to learn enough to have a basic conversation. Right now I know the alphabet plus a dozen words. Here's the sign for mermaid: http://www.handspeak.com/word/index.php?dict=me&signID=5560
In addition to ASL I'm learning divers sign for marine animals, which I thought would be neat to teach kids. Here are a few fun animal signs:

- learn some basic ASL and divers sign

Only went to the pool once last week, but on Wednesday night I went with my friend to her work out class. It was outdoors. In the sun. In Texas. It was about 100F. I can only conclude that those people are masochists. Here's how much I hate exercise, I didn't even own work out clothes! I had to cut the legs off some cotton sleep pants to make shorts and buy a sports bra. It was a pretty good work out though. They had lots of ice water and wet bandanas to keep us cool. My thighs were sore for about 3 days after.
Just got back from the pool and little while ago. I'm trying to swim with my feet together at all times so I'm be used to it when I wear a monofin. I'm debating on whether I want to go ahead and order one, then get the tail later, or save on shipping and buy them together.
I'm starting some breathing exercises to help me hold my breath underwater. I can hold my breath for a couple minutes while sitting still, but holding my breath while swimming is a different kettle of fish. While on tumblr I found this video, Mermaid exercises:

New Goal
- hold my breath longer

I'm gonna have to start doing the exercises in that video. Looks like it would be relaxing as well as strengthening the lungs.

ARRRRG THE POOL IS CLOSED THIS WEEK! I guess I'll have to go to a different one or find some other way to work out. *sigh*

Ordered a monofin from Fin Fun Mermaid last Thursday, got it yesterday in the mail! I took it to the pool and swam for over an hour. :D It's very comfortable, but not great propulsion, I'm already planning to get an Oceanika next. Good to the price ($50 + shipping).
The pool was pretty empty since public school started yesterday, but I did have some ladies ask me about my fin.
1st Lady: "Are you the one with the fin?"
Me: "Yes, it's a monofin." *let my legs float up so it sticks out of the water*
1st Lady: "And you can swim in that? You must be a very good swimmer!"
Me: "Not really, but I did practice in regular fins with my legs together first to make sure I wouldn't drown! You have to dolphin kick, like this." *makes hand motion*
2nd Lady: "And what's it for? Is it a good work out?"
Me: "It can be, there are monofins for professional swimmers, but I do it for fun."
1st Lady: "Mom, come look! She can swim in this!"
1st Lady's Mom: "It's like a mermaid tail."
Me: "Actually they make mermaid tails you can swim in. That's what I bought this for. Here" *I took off the monofin so they could see where it says finfunmermaid.com* "There are fabric ones, neoprene ones that are made out of this stuff, and realistic silicone ones that are crazy expensive, like thousands of dollars."
1st Lady: "Wow."
1st Lady's Mom: "You should do parties!"
Me: *laughs* "There are professional mermaids who do that."
2nd Lady: "What's your name?"
Me: "Mary."
All 3 ladies at once: "Mary! That's a great mermaid name. Mary the mermaid."
We talked a bit more and they seemed pretty amused by the whole thing. If this is the reaction I get from a monofin I can't wait to see what they think of a tail!

Tonight I got off work a little early and was able to go to the pool before it closed. Lucky for me it was also cute lifeguard night! ;)Apparently when it's really slow 1 lifeguard will stay on duty while the rest swim. Tonight there were only a handful of people and by the time they closed it was just me in the pool with a bunch of young, fit guys. I may or may not have been doing some tricks in my new monofin next to them, but can I help it if they just happened to be in the deepest part of the pool? One of them asked me if I was going to turn into a mermaid. I grinned and said "Maybe!" It's going to be interesting the first time I wear my tail.

Today I went swimming at my college's olympic size pool for the first time (which is a little sad since I've been taking classes there for 5 years!). It's a lot deeper than my regular pool and I'm quickly realizing the Fin Fun monofin, while inexpensive and nice looking, it just too floppy for me. Now I'm debating on if I want to order the fabric tail to go with it, or start planning a nicer neoprene tail with a cut finis or oceanika.
When I first starting researching tails and tail makers I kept to the inexpensive fabric ones. I didn't want to invest a lot of time or money in another hobby that I was afraid I might get bored with. I tend to become obsessed with something for a few months, then lose interest when I find something new. But the more I swim with this monofin the more serious I am becoming about mermaiding. I think it might be time to to start researching how to make my own tail.

That was my thinking, too, Mary - I start something, go crazy with it, then drop it, so I didn't want to invest a lot of money right off the bat. I may well stick with the original plan to get a Fin Fun tail to go with the monofin, so I have something to play with while I consider what to do about tails for the long term.

It's been a month since my last entry and I've been super busy!
I spent a week and a half visiting friends/family in California, where I bought a bunch of shells for super cheap! I lucked out and found some nice big lion's paw scallops that are almost a perfect match, plus a bunch of other types of shells for my planned mermaid top, tiara, and hair piece. Check 'em out:
15080
Stuff I still need to buy:
- nude bra
- netting (where do you even buy this?)
- fake seaweed
- lots of freshwater pearls (not sure what colors yet)
Almost immediately after getting home I left again to go camping. By the time I got home from that trip my promotion at work had gone through, so I've been working more hours.
So between travel and work, I haven't been to the pool in a month and I've gained 3 lbs from vacation food. On the other hand, I now have a bunch of shells to start making things. One step forward, two steps back? *shrug* Can't wait to get back in the water with my monofin...

I won't shop at Hobby Lobby.

That's why I suggested Michaels; jsut didn't want to mention the craziness. ;) Apparently they aren't even selling anything that isn't christian religion holiday based (No Hanukkah, etc) too...

Pearlie, thanks for the heads up on Hobby Lobby (though doesn't it seem a little ironic that an arts and crafts store is fighting the "homosexual agenda?" Does their rainbow glitter come with a disclaimer or something??) Guess I'll be shopping at Micheals! :p

Hahaha! I'll bet Hobby Lobby doesn't carry rainbow glitter just because of that!
Or, they just don't carry anything in one color throughout the whole store, just so you can't make a complete "gay" rainbow.

It's been a stupidly long time since my last entry, but I haven't been swimming in months because:
1, I was waiting for my ear piercing to heal more and
2, I didn't have a swim suit that wasn't too small or stretched out,
but now both issues have been resolved! My ears are still not 100%, but I'm okay to swim as long as I clean them with antibacterial soap afterwards. With any luck I'll be in the pool tomorrow.
So! Between my vacation and swimming hiatus I've gained some weight, ugh, but I'm confident I can swim it off. I'm also quitting my job in the next month to go back to school and finish my degree, so I''ll have more time to go to the pool. Plus, my friend is helping pay for my first tail as a belated Christmas present, so at long last I'll have a tail!
Sometimes it's two steps forward and one step back, but slowly my mermaid journey continues...

Wanted to share a cute story. On Saturday I went swimming after work. The pool was pretty empty, but there were a few boys splashing around, having fun with their grandfather and one of the off duty life guards. One of the games they were playing was 'who can hold their breath the longest.' I figured I could blow them out of the water, so to speak, so I swam up to them and said with a grin, "I bet I can beat all of you." The grandfather volunteered to time us, so the lifeguard, and the 3 boys, and I all ducked under. I don't know what everyone else's time was since my head was underwater, but I know I lasted at least 10 seconds longer! They kept trying until the lifeguard beat my time (we'll have to have a rematch some day). After that the older kids went back to throwing a ball around, but the youngest one (he was probably bout 10?) kept trying to hold his breath longer. He was trying really hard and taking it so seriously, so I gave him some tips and we swam together in the lap lanes for a while.

Went to the pool on Friday. I swam a quarter mile, then did some strength and cardio in the resistance pool, then practiced breath holding. I realized there is a BIG difference between holding your breath above water versus underwater with the pressure on your chest! Below water I can only hold my breath for 60 seconds static. Gonna work on that.
Unfortunately, I came down with a cold on Saturday. :crying:Sore throat, coughing, stuffy nose, sweating, and I'm getting a lot of green sinus drainage. Ugh. I'm pretty sure I caught it at the pool, probably from water going up my nose or in my mouth. Gross. Oh, and I lost my voice, I can only whisper.
Since I'm sick and can't go anywhere or even talk, I've just been playing on the internet. I ordered some mermaid related jewelry making supplies. I'm slowly collecting everything I need for making a shell bra and a bunch of other accessories. I can't wait for the box to arrive!
I've been thinking a lot on buying a new monofin in the next month. Rather than order a fabric tail from Fin Fun Mermaid to go with my monofin from them, I'd rather spend that money on a Merfin. The Fin Fun monofin just isn't cutting it anymore. I'm probably going to put an add up at the pool and see who is interested in buying it. I'm leaning towards getting a Merfin since it is already the right shape for mermaiding and I hear it has good propulsion. Anything from Finis I would have to either cut or modify with added sheeting for the right silhouette, plus the sizing issues with their monofins.
Lastly, if I'm getting a Merfin that means I'll have to make a tail myself. I've been looking at the cost of materials (neoprene, the thread, the paint) and I've been considering fundraising. I know a lot of mers have fundraised for tails, some more successfully than others. One thing I want to do is have rewards for donating certain amounts. Like, donate $5 and get a shell bracelet, donate $10 and get a mermaid necklace, etc. My big question is if I should fundraise online or not. If I do it online I'd reach more people, but I'd have to pay to ship everything out. But I'm not sure where I'd fundraise in person... Things to ponder.

I love my merfin. I lucked out and found one on craigslist. It has fantastic propulsion! Even though it was the size I would have had to order, my big toe was a bit cramped and I had to modify it. I don't know the size of your feet, but don't let it worry you. I modify everything! lol
It's cool you live in irving. I'm in golden CO but I'm from Azle TX. I have cousins in irving. :) When I come down to visit my family we should meet up and go swimming in our tails! :)

My bead order came in the mail! I've been so bored, I've done nothing but cough and sleep so I'm glad I have some projects to work on. They are not the best photos, but here's what I've been working on:
18278
Adjustable bracelets/anklets made from braided hemp and real shells. I made about 25, all different sizes. The smallest will fit a young kid and the biggest will go over a man's foot.
18279
Glass mermaid necklaces with matching glass beads and metal hook clasp in the back. I made 10 of these, 6 of them are 18" and 4 are 16" long.
I've been making all this stuff for future fund raising. I plan on giving them as rewards to donating certain amounts.

MERMAID STATUE
I wasn't expecting to get anything on Valentines since I'm single, but when I woke up yesterday it was on the dining room table holding a chocolate bar and a card with tail fund money! You can't really tell in this picture, but this thing is huge, over a foot tall. I need to make room on top of my bookshelf for her. Maybe I should name her?
In other news, the spandex for my first tail is on it's way! It's for a Princess Aquata cosplay I'm making to wear to A-Kon in June, more on that later.
Also I've been trying to exercise more every day, and by more I mean at all since I am a lazy fat seal. My goal is to walk a mile, do 40 squats, and 40 cherry picking every day. I'll be increasing the number of squats and cherry picks as I go. But I need to loose some weight because A, my pants don't fit, B, my cholesterol is stupid high, and C, I want to look good when I'm at A-Kon in nothing but a tail and shell bra.

Wow! I just read this entire thread really quickly! These are wonderful goals on here :)
I'm very happy to meet someone else who mixes their spirituality with their Mermaid self! I myself am a Witch, hereditary in the fact that I come from a family of Pagans as well. I would be Wiccan, but I found coven working and initiation, rules etc were not for me! But I have friends who are Wiccan and the belief system is very similar to us Witches (heck you even count as witches yourselves!) How long have you been initiated for? :) And how long have you been into this magical side of life?
I also do small calming, and stress releasing along with charging rituals within my bath tub with sea salts and various ocean based bath products. And I also have an altar set out specially for Merpeople. I LOVE LOVE LOVE that statue your mother got you! it is stunning, I have a few mermaids but that one is just wow! Naming her sounds great! :)
I also have an exercise regime (although that's more to do with the fact I'm a ballet dancer!) But I have lately been doing a lot of swimming to practice dolphin kick and to strengthen my legs :)
I wish you luck with everything!

Thanks for reading my journal, Vaughan! It's always good to find another Witch, there are more than I expected on Mernetwork. Coven work can be pretty structured, which is one of the reasons I haven't officially joined one even though I study with them and do rituals. I was dedicated (like an initiation, but without being a formal member of a coven) about 2 years ago I think? I've honestly lost track, but I've considered myself pagan for 11 years. I love to meditate in the bathtub with some bath salts, I've been meaning to make my own since I already have the essential oils. I don't have a specific shrine for merpeople, but I do frequently redecorate my altar with a mermaid/ocean theme. Still need to name my new statue...

At long last my Merfin came in the mail! Took it for its maiden voyage yesterday and it was fantastic! The lifeguards at my pool all ooo'ed and awe'd over it and how fast I was. It's so much bigger and stiffer than my other monofin, my lap time went from 30 seconds down to 20. The additional power really helps me keep from floating up and my dolphin kick form is better. The only con is the foot pocket is a little big and started to blister my ankle, but some neoprene socks will solve that.
With my Merfin here, I expect my exercise routine to pick up. Since I quit my job to finish school my physical activity has gone down, even with the additional walking and bike riding. It's going to take a lot more trips to the pool to make up for it, much less lose weight. I'm dying to start on my tail pattern, but I really want to put it off until I've slimmed down some so I don't have to resew it later.
Just to recap my progress, here's my checklist for my first tail:
Have
- monofin
- tail fabric
- shells, pearls, and fake seaweed for accesories
Need
- a nude bra for the top
- neoprene socks
Guess I need to go bra shopping. Ugh, I hate bras so much I don't even wear real ones anymore, just sports bras. They're uncomfortable, expensive, and impossible to find in my size. I always end up getting a "sister size", which never fits exactly right, but I guess it won't matter too much if I'm butchering it into a mermaid tail? I'll just find a cup size that fits and mutilate the band and straps into fitting. Take that fashion industry!

It's been a stupid long time since I last posted and a lot has happened! A quick breakdown:
A-Kon: Went on Saturday in costume! My friend pushed me around in a wheelchair and several people took my picture. :yay: Went swimming in the hotel pool, which was very crowded but fun.
Pod of Texas 2014 Meet Up: Lots of planning but tons of fun! An entire weekend of nothing but tail swimming with other mers at Krause Springs. (I could rant about this for pages, but I'm getting ready for work ATM.)
After that I had to take a haitus from mermaiding to hunt for a job, found one back in August, then I spent all of September frantically finishing art projects to vend at Witchstock. Made a little extra money and decided to get back to work on the mermaid costume. Between A-Kon and the Meet-Up the tail took quick a beating and desperately needs a new paint job, so I've been buying bottles of fabric paint one coupon at a time. The butt and heels are so banged up I'm almost ashamed to go tail swimming in public, but of course kids don't care. ;)
More on all this later, I got a 40% off one item coupon burning a hole in my pocket so I'm making a trip to Michael's before work. Hmm, should I get more fabric paint? Fabric glitter? Plastic seahorse? Decisions, decisions....
