View Full Version : Jessica's dragonskin tail

I'm working on my first dragonskin silicone tail and I finally got around to making a thread for it! I posted my scale mold disaster with shell shock in my introduction awhile back..and I'm still working on scraping foam out of my mold.

Today I finished putting my fluke together and doing seam samples for the body of the tail. I want to make the seams as invisible as possible....which isn't easy. I've figured out how to do small sections well (clothespins!), but I need to find a method that works for larger sections where I can't use clothespins to hold it together.

Here's a picture of some scales I put together today and a few of my fluke

Thanks you guys! Your support is amazing! It's so wonderful to have people who understand.....my boyfriend still looks at me like I'm crazy....at least my kids are excited. :)

nerin,
im working on a few different designs right now. I honestly spent so much time figuring out how to actually make a tail that I didn't spend any time on my design. I just ordered some new paint the other day that should be here tomorrow. I'm going to do a few more color tests before I decide what design I'm going to do.

neotail,
can you tell me about your process? Also, what monofin are you using? I used a foil in my fluke and it was difficult because of the thickness on the sides. Did your silicone not cure?

Here's what I did:
First, I centered the monofin on the bottom of the fluke. Then, I started at one corner of my fluke (the tip) and used a paintbrush to paint a thin layer of silicone on the bottom only. I lined the top of the fluke up with the corner and used clothes pins to pin it in place.

You really need an extra set of hands for this process. I worked in small areas and had my daughter hold the top of the fluke up while I painted more silicone on the bottom of the fluke. Don't bother putting silicone under the monofin.....it won't stick to the monofin anyway. I also used two rulers and a few plastic drinking straws to create drainage channels from the monofin to the end of the fluke. Don't put too much silicone near the rulers/straws or it will be difficult to remove them later.

After I pinned everything in place, I stacked textbooks on top. I also checked the fluke every five to ten minutes to make sure no silicone was leaking out or nothing slipped. Be careful if you use clothespins....I have a few little spots on the tip of my fluke that I have to fix because the silicone squished up between the clothespins.

Just be careful not to use too much silicone near the edges. If you do, it will squish out and make a mess of the edge of your fluke. It helps to run a paintbrush over the seam on the edge while the silicone is curing to prevent a messy edge.

Let me know if you have any questions! I'm happy to help in any way I can. This process is overwhelming at times and if it wasn't for all of the tutorials and threads people have posted I would never have made it this far.

You've helped so much thankyou! I think I'm going to try and make it solid and as one piece without drainage systems and just create drainage slits where the scales meet the fluke. The tail im working on is in a thread here called 'Merman diaries' :)

Jessica

Neotail,

i really recommend having drainage slits in the fluke. I tested my fluke in the water today and when I lifted it out of the water it was full of water. The water drained quickly, but without the drainage slits the water would have no way out of the fluke unless i put my feet/fluke up on the air. Water is going to collect around your feet in the monofin and won't have a way out while you're swimming if you don't put slits in the fluke. I would imagine it would cause a water bubble around your toes without the slits.

Hi Caspiana,

i checked out your tail designs and your sketches are beautiful! I love how you use fish for inspiration. I've already been working on a half a dozen designs myself in the last few days. I'm not sure what colors I'm going to use yet, but I'm still testing paint and learning how to blend the colors together. I think I'm just going to see what colors work best together and see which of my designs will look the best. I really appreciate your offer though and I know you will have a good future in this business because your work is lovely!

Progress! Scales are curing! I decided to do my scale sheet in sections since the bottom of my mold is still a mess. This is Firemaid's method and it worked for her so I decided to give it a try. I think I'm going to make a new scale sheet though....and this time out of clay. I would like to make my own scale design so this is next on my list! It's just taking forever to clean all the foam out of my mold. I know I'll finish it eventually though.

Hi Jessica! As you know, I have had the exact same problem digging out all the foam circles embedded in my Shell Shock mold as well. After trying several different things, I have had quite a bit of success by saturating the foam scales with bottles of Goo Gone. I waited a couple days then marinated the thing again. It made it MUCH easier to use a butter knife to scrape the foam out...especially on those hard to get edges. The stuff is oily so you don't have to worry about it evaporating like Acetone or Paint Thinner and none of the horrific fumes. It has a pleasant citrus scent and it's cheap at Home Depot. The stubborn patches I just douse again and work on it the next day. I hope this helps! I FINALLY see some light at the end of the tunnel. LOVE your fluke BTW! Get yourself a stiff plastic bristle brush (it actually worked better than the wire brush I got there) to remove any stubborn pieces to small to pry up. :-)

Never tried working with silicone, but way back in the day, my dad made fiberglass kayak molds, and we had problems with the mold release agent soaking into the porous Bondo we used to make the plug (model of the kayak that becomes the base for the mold), and leaving the top uncoated. So the fiberglass stuck and we had to pick the Bondo out of the mold. Maybe something similar with your foam circles? We used a couple of coats of clear fiberglass to seal the Bondo on the next mold!

Allie and Mizuko, thank you! It's my first attempt and I'm hoping I can keep the seams as hidden as possible.

Mizuko,
have you started your scale sheet yet? I remember that you were working on getting your foam shapes cut. I can't wait to see your pink tail in silicone!! All of your tails are gorgeous and I'm so jealous that you have such beautiful beaches!

keiris,

I'm so happy to hear that you found a solution! I've been using sandpaper and a knife and it seems endless! I finally got sick of waiting and have been using the top half of my mold and I'm piecing together my scale sheet. I actually think it might make it a little easier to do the seams. After I finish this tail I'm going to get back to work on cleaning the bottom half. Thanks so much for your advice!

Echinacea,

I've never tried using clear fiberglass before but it sounds like a good idea. I'll keep this in mind for my next mold so I don't have to go through this again. Thanks!

It really depends on how this tail turns out...and the other 3 I'm going to make( one each for my little girls and one for my best friend!)

Dragonskin silicone is very expensive but its amazing stuff. The whole process is quite an investment of both time and money.

Maybe try something like varnish, Jessica? I know fiberglass resin and styrofoam do not mix - the fiberglass eats into the styrofoam. (Or it did 40 years ago...)

I tried using krylon lacquer during one of my tests, but I swear it made it stick worse! It's funny though my test with just ease release was perfect....but the big mold was a mess.

I think the problem was the shell shock....it's tough stuff to work with. I've never worked with fiberglass resin before...but it would be beyond awful to have it eat hundreds of foam circles that took hours and hours to punch!

I think my next scale sheet will be made out of clay so I can customize my scale design. Circles are fine but I think I would like something more unique.

I really appreciate all of your input! It really helps to bring up things like this. It might just save someone from a scale mold disaster!

1/3 of the body of my tail is done! It's like a scale miniskirt at the moment. It fits perfectly! I'm not thrilled with how the seam on the other side came out. I just couldn't get the scales to line up where I need them. I'm going to work on it some more though and trim it a little. I don't think it will be too noticeable once its painted though.

I'm doing the body of the tail in three sections and plan on joining them together. I think it will be slightly easier to get the size perfect, but much harder because I will have more seams.

my latest discovery.....when I measure silicone there always seems to be a little left in the measuring cup. After being exposed to air for a few days, when you mix par a and part b together they begin to cure almost immediately! This is great for when you're gluing seams together.

Section 2 of my tail body! I'm also attaching scales to the top of the fluke tonight. For the tail body I have a red plastic folder in between to catch any extra silicone so the tail doesn't get stuck together on the middle. I have one side seam of section two done and after I join the sections together I will line up and join the other side. This method is working well but it's very time consuming! I don't recommend it unless you are very patient and pay a lot of attention to detail.....otherwise you could have a lot of messy seams. It would probably work better to join the sheets/sections of scales prior to doing your seams. However.....if you do your tail in sections like this you do have a chance to fix problems without cutting out an entire seam.

I have discovered that seams are really much much easier to do if your scale sheet is thin. My sheets are paper thin in places and even have a few tiny holes between the scales. After I paint the tail, the scales will be a good thickness and any holes will be filled in. When i was making the sections, instead of pouring silicone in the mold I used a paintbrush. This eliminated large air bubbles in the silicone and gave me more control over the thickness of the sheet. Thin sheets are more fragile though....they do tear easily if you aren't really careful with them.

Jazz,
since I used a paintbrush to paint the silicone in the mold, I just had a tiny bit of excess to trim around each scale. Instead of overlapping them, I just lined them up like they were from the same sheet. This way I don't have a ridge in the middle of the tail. I'm going to reinforce the back with a thin layer of silicone as well so it's nice and smooth inside.

I'm working really hard to get this tail done! I'm headed to the beach soon and want to take it with me and get some pictures!!

thanks so much for all your encouragement! You guys are awesome :)

So I spent my day taking my tail in around the knees and it fits much better now! I also just finished putting scales on the back side of the monofin and trimming the seams on the body. I've figured out a method for doing the seams that's working pretty well. If it works and still looks good after I paint, I'll try to explain it all on here.

Lorelei mentioned in her thread that she would freeze leftover silicone (that was already mixed) so it wouldn't cure. I had a little left over yesterday and stuck it in the freezer. It works great today and is amazing for seams! It cures quickly once it warms so I don't have to hold things in place quite so long when I'm sticking things together. My boyfriend wasn't thrilled when he accidentally stuck his hand in the silicone when he was getting ice cream though.....:)

heres a picture of the back side of the fluke

and a picture of my little mermaid in her sequin fabric tail I made last year! (No monofin -- it has a hole for her feet to come out so she can walk) she's playing mermaid while I'm working on my tail :)

I have to make a decision quick....I'm going to start painting in the morning!

I tried my tail on and it fits perfectly! I also started a scale bra last night with leftover scraps of silicone scales. This tail (unpainted) hasn't even used an entire gallon order of dragonskin yet. I have very little left in the container, but I don't think painting will take too much. This is so exciting because I bought 2 gallon orders so I should have enough for 2 tails depending on how much silicone I use to paint the tail. :)

I love the color scheme! (Purple is my all time favorite color)

Here's a question...you said that this tail is pretty thin...Are you afraid you might tear it when you pull it on? If so... could you make yourself a spandex 'sleeve' for your legs, covered it with a coat of silicone, then slipped on the tail and let it cure inside the tail...that would reinforce it, yes?

Can you tell I am kicking around the idea of a hybrid fabric/silicone tail?

It looks FABULOUS! I can't wait to see it painted!

Jessica
08-08-2013, 05:25 PM
Thanks everyone! I'm so excited....but so exhausted! I've been painting nonstop since noon.

Pearliemae, you can make a fabric sleeve...but it would be messy to get it inside a tail. It would probably be better to add a fabric backing when you pour silicone in the scale mold.

I'm not worried about ripping the tail. I've tried it on several times already and it's holding up well. It took me four coats of paint/silicone to get the shade of purple I want and each coat makes the tail a little thicker. When I did my scale tests I realized that if you cast the scales super thin, the coats of paint make it the perfect thickness.

The very end of the fluke doesn't have any paint on it yet and I still have to add another coat or two of teal/blue. This isn't the best picture, but you can get an idea of how it's going to look!

you should read a few of my favorite tail making threads! Star, Lorelei, ilonka and jazz all have amazing threads that explain the process. I learned just about everything I needed to know on here.

I used craft foam and punched out circles to make my scale sheet. Jazz used precut soccer balls and her's turned out great. If you can afford it, soccer balls are the way to go. ....so much easier than punching 1200 circles by hand....:) just use tons of release agent when you make your mold or you will have a disaster like I did.

thanks Keri, jazz and julz! You keep me motivated! It's been tough getting the colors dark enough around the monofin to cover it. Layers and layers of paint! I'm really happy though...It looks so much better than my sketch! Since it takes so many layers, blending colors is really easy too.

I'm hoping to get this side done tonight. I'll keep you updated. :)

julz, I'm not sure...but I think you can use the same paint with latex. I think you can just mix the pigment in like with silicone....again though I'm really not sure. Silicone really isn't that much more expensive if you're doing a neoprene base. You would use a lot less silicone and should be able to get away with just one gallon order if you're just texturing your fluke or if your fluke isn't very big. I'm still on my first gallon order for this tail, but my fluke is thin. I can't wait to see your tail!

Jessica, Its coming along.... i had a hardware malfunction with my punch. It broke internally. I broke it down and now using as a hammer punch... its going about the same speed, but its giving me better circles. only downside is its louder. But yours is coming along great. I am constantly looking at the threads here and trying to grab as much information as i can. I feel that some things for silicone can work just as well for latex.... but not all. Keep up the great work!

This looks wonderful! Love it! I tried to do the same thing, but mine came out waaay too thick and heavy! what a bummer for me! :/

Jessica

Krystal,

i can see how easily a tail can become too thick. It takes so many layers to get the color you want and each layer makes the tail thicker and heavier. I made my scales very thin to compensate for the layers of paint. Some of my scales tests were so thick that they lost a lot of stretch. I remember reading your thread and your tail was beautiful! I'm sorry that it didn't turn out the way you wanted.

I'm testing some pink paint... Not sure if I like it or not. I can cover it easily with purple...anyone have an opinion/ suggestion? I'm just making this up as I go.....( I knew that sketch wouldn't last long :)

Your tail is so lovely! Are you using silicone thinner to thin the silicone to paint? Or are you just mixing it normally and adding the pigments?

So I ran into a little issue that set me back....I had a lot of trouble with the silicone not curing near the monofin. I talked to a tech guy from smooth on and be thought it was an issue with traces of release agent on the surface of the silicone. Which makes perfect sense......

So yesterday I scraped paint off and cleaned the area....and it still didn't work. This morning I was convinced that it was the rubber monofin preventing the silicone from curing since the areas were concentrated around the monofin. So then I cut my tail open(yes this was every bit as painful as it sounds) and removed the monofin. I also cut out the section of scales that was giving me so much trouble and made a replacement patch.

Im rather frustrated, but more than anything I'm disappointed. I prepared for every possible disaster and this kinda hit me out of nowhere. All of my paint tests have been fine, so I never expected this issue to come up. I think the problem is from both traces of release agent and from the scales being too close to the monofin. Silicone is picky stuff.....live and learn I guess. I won't make this mistake again!

Anyway, thank you all so much for all your support and encouragement! I'm going to clean the sections again, let this tail air out for a few days, and then get back to work. :)

aziara, I'm just mixing pigments with the silicone. I'm not using an airbrush so I don't need to thin the silicone. Painting by hand takes longer, but at least I don't have to clean an airbrush! :)

Wow...that really sucks! Seems to happen to my projects all the time, too, but that's how we learn. I'm sure it will end up better than you expected!

Here's a dumb question...when embedding a monofin into a silicone tail, do you take the heel straps off? Do you leave access to where the connect and put the heel straps back on later, or is the tail enough to hold the fluke in place when you swim?

Good luck with the completion!

Mermaid Kelda
08-14-2013, 10:27 PM
You need to keep the straps on. One-piece straps are better I've heard (i.e. like the Foil rather than the Wave), because you don't have to worry about them loosening and having to adjust them, and you can hide them better so they're less noticeable from the outside :)

Thanks so much everyone.....your support really does make a difference! I'm sorry for the lack of updates...I just got back in town this afternoon from the beach in SC. I really tried my best to get my tail done for my trip....which made it even harder when I ran into the painting problem and didn't get it done in time. :(

So here is what I have finally determined to be the issue with my tail....

After putting my fluke together, I tested it in my mom's pool. I noticed when I got home that the area right below the monofin looked darker than before. I assumed that it was just wet inside, but I do remember thinking it was strange. After the paint didnt stick and i removed the monofin from my tail, I realized that you can clearly see that the silicone is discolored in the area where the monofin was. So that got me thinking that there must have been some sort of issue with the combo of the silicone, chlorinated pool water, and rubber monofin. Chemical reaction maybe? I'm not sure, but I'm going to give my smooth on guy a call tomorrow. I'll keep you updated! I'm going to finish this tail!!

I've considered cutting the end off ( ankles and below) and just making a new fluke. I'm making two tails anyway, so I might be able to salvage this fluke for the next tail.

Cascada,

I'm 5'6", 115lbs and depending on the brand, I wear a size 1 or 3 in juniors shorts/jeans. If I hadn't run into this painting issue, I would have been able to finish this tail on only one gallon order of dragonskin. If youre close to my size, you should be fine with one order if your fluke isn't too thick. More than anything the amount if silicone you need depends on your fluke sculpture. Mine is pretty thin even though its a decent size. If I were you I would make your fluke mold, fill it with one cup of water at a time(keep tack of how many cups!) and then order dragonskin based on how many cups you need for your fluke. You should allow about 1/2 an order of dragonskin for the fluke body and painting. I hope this helps!

I am prepping for my own silicone tail and am doing scale tests in my mold as we speak. :) Cant wait to hear what is going on with your fluke and the monofin. I was going to go with the foil as well but was worried about what it was made of. It says it is a rubber but doesnt say what kid.I was worried about inhibition. you can fill in gaps with sulfur free clay. I had several sections of my fluke that had bubbles in the mold. When I talked to smooth on, the guy mentioned that you shouldn't pour shell shock in humid conditions because it makes it bubbly/foamy.

Jessica, getting the silicone to fuse to the monofin is something I think only Raven has been able to do from my research of other tail makers. :/ I have heard from just about everyone else that the monofins are loose inside the pockets or become loose. I'm not sure what the trick is :( but you are not the only one to run into it. My mertailor tail wouldn't stay fused, my mermaid creations one doesn't either.

The product smooth on sells (it's called sil poxy) doesn't work.
I have found a complicated work around involving lace and crystal clear spray paint, but it's not ideal.
One problem seems to be the foil. Other monofins aren't as tricky.

Bummer :( The foil looked so promising too.... I guess it was just too good to be true (what with the stable ankle straps, nice price, and good balance between flexibility and propulsion)

I guess I'm glad now that I didn't buy a foil for my test tail. But it sucks to learn this stuff because your tail having problems.

Hi everyone! So sorry for the lack of updates! I just got back from selling jewelry in VA and I spent the past couple weeks making jewelry nonstop to get ready for this weekend. I'm exhausted at the moment...3 hours of driving a day +12 hours on my feet for three days straight is beyond exhausting. I can't wait to get back to work on my tail this week.

My main issue is with silicone not wanting to stick near where the foil monofin was. I decided to try making a patch for the fluke....think of the way a bandaid works. I brushed a thin layer of silicone in my fluke mold only in the area that needs to be repaired and I'm painting it before I attach it to the fluke. I'm going to seal it completely around the edges(I made it larger than the problem area) and I think with a few coats of paint it won't be noticeable at all. I will keep you updated and let you know how this works!

Im also making an extra scale patch to replace the one I cut out. I have some good ideas and I know I can salvage this tail!

Star, I read your thread over and over....:) You helped me so much! The foil monofin is tricky to work with, but now that I know what the issues are I won't make the same mistake again. Its definitely the root of my problems and it inhibited the silicone/paint from curing near the monofin. Next time, I plan to paint the fluke before I put the foil in. I've learned so much making this tail...and I actually would use a foil monofin again because I know all the issues that can come up now.

Raina, I don't know how raven can get the silicone to stick to the monofin...or at least the foil. The foil inhibited the cure of the silicone on top of a 1/4" of silicone on my fluke...I honestly don't know how she is even able to repaint tails that have the foil in them. I don't think there would be such an issue with a competitor though because it isn't made of rubber like the foil. Raven's work is amazing and your tail is just stunning by the way :)

My new goal: to finish this tail by this weekend (my birthday!) my sister is coming to visit ( and thinks I'm a little nuts for making a tail) and I would love to show it to her. I'll keep you guys updated!

I'm painting today and I'm really hoping this patch method will fix the fluke! It feels good to finally have some time to finish this project up....things have been so busy lately. The patch for the fluke is very thin so I don't think it will show at all around the edges after a few coats of paint.

Anahita,
the wave monofin has rubber foot pockets and a yellow plastic blade. The foil monofin is completely made out of rubber. Both are good monofins but the wave gives you more power in the water. The foil is great for tricks though....it's very easy to twist and turn with it.

Eva,

I'm using pearl ex powdered pigments by jacquard : Misty lavender, duo violet brass, reflex violet, true blue, sky blue, grey lavender, pink gold, duo red blue.....just to name a few. They mix really well together and very easily into the silicone. Just make sure that your paint to silicone ratio isn't too high or the silicone might not cure. If I remember correctly, the ratio is 1:10 ( one part paint to 10 parts silicone)----double check this though! My memory isn't what it used to be:)

thanks so much everyone for your support!

Here's a picture of the fluke patch and a picture of my new strands of real coral! I picked them up when I was selling jewelry out of town last weekend. I'm really excited to get my pliers out and make some new mermaid jewelry after I finish my tail. I've never seen coral beads this large before in pink and I'm so in love with it! I didn't get around to finishing my tail by my birthday, but I've made a ton of progress! I was really busy last week so I didn't have much time to work on it. I did finish painting the patch for the fluke and the patch of scales to replace the ones I had to cut out around the ankles/feet. I attached the fluke patch right below where the scales attach to the fluke. It's taken 4-5 layers of silicone so far to seal the edge and its going to take a few more. I'm as happy as I could be with the fluke patch. It's not a perfect fix, but it will make this a useable tail. Since the fluke patch is only sealed around the edges, the patch moves differently than the rest of the fluke.....there's no monofin in it yet, but it wrinkles a little when I lift/bend the fluke. I think the monofin will help with this issue but even if it doesn't I'm not too concerned about it. This is just my first tail and I expected to run into a few problems! Making a silicone tail is a real learning experience....and if you get frustrated/discouraged easily I really don't recommend it!

I am looking for advice/input.... What color do you guys think I should use at the end of the fluke? I'm considering fading to lavender (like the top part of the body of the tail) or maybe a pearly white...any ideas? :)

Here are a few pictures....

the first one is the back side of the fluke with no monofin. You can see how the finis foil discolored the silicone and in this entire area the silicone wouldn't cure when I tried to paint it.

Second picture: front of tail with problem scales removed

Third picture: front of tail with scale patch (not attached yet)

fourth picture: back of tail with fluke patch attached (after I seal the edges completely I will paint the rest!)

This morning I worked on fixing the seams on the ankle patches and I'm nearly done patching this tail back together! I have to say it's so much harder fixing seams with the fluke attached. I can't just stuff the body of the tail and roll it in its side like I did before, but I did manage to stack a bunch of random stuff on top to hold the scales exactly where I needed them. There is no monofin in this tail at the moment, and I won't be putting the monofin back in until this tail is completely painted. Since I'm using a foil, I plan on rolling it up and then cramming it down the body of the tail and back into the fluke. I don't want to take any chances with silicone not curing again when I'm painting!

Lorelei,
You have no idea how much your thread helped me! You are part of the reason that I joined mernetwork in the first place. I figured that since I learned so much from all of the threads you and others posted on here, I should post my progress in hopes that it would help other people making tails. I've made several mistakes during this process and I hope that other people will learn from them and not make the same ones I did.

I am hand painting my tail and mostly because I don't want to waste any silicone. I mix one to two teaspoons of silicone together at a time on a paper plate and use really small, cheap brushes---nail brushes are really cheap on amazon and work great. You have to paint thin layers or the silicone will run all over the place(I learned this the hard way) although I like the idea of using an airbrush because it would be faster, I really didnt want to make a mess, have to thin the silicone or clean the airbrush. There is very little waste when you mix silicone on a paper plate because you can scrape every last bit off with the edge of a spoon. It also makes it easy to blend the colors together when you paint multiple layers.

I was wondering if you also had an issue with the silicone paint sticking around the footpockets of the monofin. There's a picture of you in your tail with patches of paint gone around the footpockets that looks eerily similar to a picture I have of my tail prior to the repair. I tried everything smooth on recommended to clean the silicone but nothing worked and the areas had to be replaced.

Dominique, Merrow and Kae,

thanks so much for your painting ideas! I have a lot to think about! I might gradually fade the blue into white and then maybe add just a little pink or another color right on the very edge of the fluke.

Thanks so much to all of you for your kind comments and encouragement! You keep me motivated!:)

here are a couple pictures of my balancing act...trying to keep my scales where they belong while the silicone cures!

Quick question....can you pour silicone right onto a plaster mold or does it NEED to be sealed with shell shock?

Lorelei,
You have no idea how much your thread helped me!

<3 Aww, yay!

I did have a bit of an issue, but it was not because of the footpockets. It was actually a lack of cure time on my part. I painted that section and then took my tail in the water too soon afterwards. :P

Jazz,

I used two gallons of shell shock between my scale mold and fluke mold. After I poured enough shell shock to cover the clay entirely, I used fiberglass cloth (http://www.lowes.com/pd_331525-98-20128_0__) to strengthen the mold. Jared from Reynolds advanced materials recommended using it and I'm really glad I did. The mold is heavy, but more awkward than anything. I have moved it twice by myself and its not easy! The fiberglass cloth is cheap and one pack was enough to do my scale mold. You can cut it into strips if needed and just drop it on the shell shock while its still wet. Depending on the size of your fluke mold you might be able to just use one pack for both the scale mold and fluke mold. I'm o excited to see your next tail by the way!

pearlie Mae,

i really don't know anything about plaster but you don't have to use shell shock for your mold. There are many different materials you can use for a mold for silicone. Firemaid might be able to help you with this question though. I know she has used polyurethane before and might know something about plaster. Good luck! You can always call smooth on for advice as well. They are always really helpful. Let me know what you find out!

Lorelei,

I'm glad to hear you didn't have the same issue I did. I made the mistake once of not waiting long enough for silicone to cure before I painted another layer. It made a gloopy, clumpy mess of my silicone scales! Live and learn... :)

I am happy to announce that my tail is officially whole again! All of the patches are complete and now I just need to paint! Please excuse the mess...this is what comes with making a silicone tail :) the last picture is of some earrings I put together the other day. I'm in love with the octopus earrings!

Now that my tail is back together, I've been painting and well watching paint dry. I've added white to the end of the fluke on the back side(the side with the fluke patch) and I'm working on building up layers so the edge of the patch won't show. It's going to take several more layers to cover the edge. I'm also still trying to make up my mind about what color to add to the very edge of the fluke....I'm leaning towards the pink/gold color I'm using on the body of the tail.

for the body of the tail I've added purple with gold mixed in along the side seams. The purple is helping hide the seams much better than the lavender I had there before. After this coat of silicone cures, I'm going to add pink/gold along the front of the hips and down to the ankles. The middle of the tail will be the light blue at the ankles fading to a bluish pink and lavender as it goes up the body.

Despite the problems this tail has had, I'm pretty happy with how it's turning out. I've learned so much and I can't wait to start my next tail. I'm planning on making a few more tails: one for my best friend (who is going into business with me!), one for each of my daughters(I think these will be neoprene lined so they won't be too heavy) and another tail for me because this tail isn't perfect.

Here are a few painting progress pictures: (the purple hides the seam rather well in the picture of the scales!)

I think a trade could be a really cool project in the future.
I've been thinking a lot about the possibility of tail makers working together.
Collaborations could be so fun! One persons scales with anothers fin and some elses paint job!!

Firemaid,

I would love to work on a tail with someone else! It would be awesome if we could swap a fluke....it would be a completely different tail without the cost of making a new fluke mold. I'm so excited for you and your new business. :)

I've been painting all day and I'm nearly done! I still need to finish the fluke and smooth out the seams from the patch. I also am going to add another layer of pink down the hips, a little more purple and blue around where the monofin is going and I need to paint the waist of the tail.

I'm so thrilled with the colors:

The front side of the tail is almost done! I just need to add a little more blue on the ankles and fluke and a touch of gold at the waist. I'm literally watching paint dry at the moment. This side of the tail will be finished later today.

I added a touch of the pink/gold at the very end of the fluke. What do you think?

So...the front side of my tail is completely done! I just painted another coat on the back and I should be able to finish painting the back side tomorrow.

Jade,

i actually wasn't planning on adding gold to the tip of the fluke...but you got me thinking! I added a thin coat of gold on top of the pink and I absolutely love it. Thanks so much!! I'm hoping you make a silicone tail someday.....I would love to see your painting skills on silicone. If you can make fabric look like latex/silicone I can only imagine how amazing you could make a silicone tail look. :)

mermaid m,
thanks! I wouldn't say I was born with talent for this though...I spent I think nine months doing research and reading everything I could before I started this tail. Despite all my research and careful preparation, I still made mistakes!

Mizuko,
i love pastel colors too...I absolutely love your merbellas tail and your fabric tails are so unique. :) what paint are you using for your tail? I used jacquard pearl ex powdered pigments...the pink in my tail is the pink gold. I think it would be a great color for your tail and if you're looking for a blue...the sky blue is gorgeous! you can also mix it with a little white to get a pastel blue...i used it full strength and after several coats it gives you the blue you see in my tail. I have nearly every color of pearl ex (I ordered all the sample packs) so if there's a color you want to see in silicone let me know. I think my next tail is going to be mostly pink....I have a great design I'm working on!

Thanks so much mermaid Eva and merhopefully!

I'll post some pictures tomorrow. :)

Oh yay!! I can't wait to see what it looks like when you finish eeee!!! :)

And haha, I would loooove to make a silicone tail... I would spend SO much time painting it probably, haha. And designing the fluke and fins... I do really love designing things in my head! Sadly, I lack the funds :( Gotta save my money for after I graduate and can't find a job (my future is "poor scientist"). Someday maybe, though :) And I have a new fabric tail in the works, so that should tide over my creative urges.

I'm using the pearl ex powdered pigments too! :D I've got it in flamingo pink and pink gold- and lots of pearl white- as my silicone tail is going to be very pink too! haha! I love the blue on your tail- I purchased some sky blue also, but I'm tossing up wether I will use it on my first tail. If I do, it will be a veryyyy light blue! hehe!
This tail is just beautiful, it makes me really happy to see your progress! ^___^ I cant wait see it finished! :D

Great job ! Beautiful painting too....I'm wondering though, with silicone tails, painting on the surface of them-won't the paint chip and scrape off ? Also, do you know how much it weighs ?

Anahita
09-26-2013, 01:11 AM
Citrine, they're not really painting their silicone, they're pigmenting it. It's just the way they're applying the pigmented silicone to the tail is the same way you would "paint" with actual paints. That's why they're referring to it as painting rather than pigmenting.

Jade,
i can't wait to see your next tail! Since you're going to be a scientist.....maybe you can create a silicone that doesn't have issues with rubber! Then mermaids wouldn't have to worry about cure inhibition with their monofins. :)

mizuko,
I think we are going to wind up looking like sister mermaids with our pink tails! I'm also planning on adding salmon pink to my next tail...in addition to the sparkle gold, flamingo pink and pink gold. I might use a touch of purple or maybe blue near the ridges on the fluke as well. I love the pearl white...that's what I used on the end of my fluke and its so pretty in person.

citrine,
Anahita explained the painting really well. Since nothing sticks to silicone except silicone, you have to paint the tail with more silicone. You take silicone and mix powdered paint in so its very concentrated. I call this painting because I use a paintbrush to apply the pigmented silicone to the tail. Once the layer of pigmented silicone cures, it becomes a part of the tail. There is no seam and you can't remove it.

The only time silicone "paint" might come off is if you experience cure inhibition....when something is stopping the silicone from curing completely. This happened to me in the areas around the finis foil monofin because the rubber was inhibiting the cure of the silicone.

I'm not sure how much my tail weighs...at least 20-25lbs and that's without the monofin inside! Its very heavy on land, but silicone is supposed to be neutrally buoyant in the water.

Arion,
You're very sweet! I love your new merman name :)

So you used the Finis Foil Jessica? The other 2 Finis models are plastic and that one is rubber correct? I know the shoes on some monofins are rubber also. Has anyone else ever had a Finis Foil in a silicone tail before? Or has anyone else had any monofin that had rubber shoes on it inside of silicone. Neoprene is rubber actually and that is routinely attached to silicone tails. Do you think there had not been quite enough time in your cure and that is why the rubber was a problem for you?

Jessica
09-27-2013, 12:53 PM
Thanks julz!

golden pearl,
I know that raven has used foil in some of her tails before and I think....but I'm not sure...that merman Jesse has used foils before. Firemaid has used a foil...I think in her pink tail. I love the foil because it makes the fluke more flowy.

The time I allowed the silicone to cure was not the issue. If silicone doesn't cure within the 7-8 hours (for dragonskin med 10) then it isn't going to cure. Dragonskin cures because of a chemical reaction between part a and b. part b is the catalyst. If you're concerned about silicone curing, you can always add a little extra part b. This will work sometimes, but not always. It's ok to have extra part b, but not extra part a. You can also add extra part b if you're in a hurry and it will speed up cure time.

I think the problem with the foil could be a combination of the length of time my silicone was directly exposed to it (i had my fluke attached to the foil for a long time before I painted it) and my fluke was rather thin. I'm quite positive that there wasn't surface contamination from another source. I cleaned the areas with dish soap and with rubbing alcohol and the paint still wouldn't stick.

I haven't tested yet to see if the foot pockets on my finis wave will inhibit the cure of the silicone yet. I'm probably using a wave in my next tail (I got one cheap on amazon) and I personally love the power the wave gives me in the water. I think neoprene might be similar to the footpockets on the wave. In any case, it seems like a totally different kind of rubber. My foil stinks....it has a strange rubbery smell...but my wave doesn't.

I will use a foil again, but I will not let it near the tail until the tail is complete. There is no monofin in my tail right now. I'm waiting for the final coat if paint to dry right now and then I will roll the foil up and shove it down the tail to the fluke. This is only possible because my fluke attaches to the monofin right below the toes. If the fluke covered the monofin completely, this would be impossible.

If I were you, I would toss some uncured silicone directly on the monofin you made. If it cures, you're fine. If not....then take precautions and install the monofin at the absolute last minute...and after you paint the fluke. That's what I plan on doing from now on. My mistake cost me an extra 1/3 of a gallon of dragonskin...not a cheap fix, but cheaper than just making a new fluke.

Good luck!

as I mentioned above...the final coat of paint is drying!! This tail will be complete in just a few more hours!!!!! I almost can't believe it....I've been working on it for so long.

I will post pictures later today after I get the monofin back in the tail.

Thank you all so much! You guys are all so sweet and its so nice to have people who understand what an accomplishment it was to finally finish this tail! It's so exciting to have a silicone tail.....but wow I heard how tough they are to get into....I seriously had no idea :)

the tail is super tight....I designed it that way. I do wish I had made it an inch or so bigger around the heels/ankles/calves/knees. I made it really tight to reduce wrinkles, but it is so hard to get the tail on.

Iona,
thanks! I have noticed that many tail makers have a seam near the fluke. I loved hand painting my tail.
it gave me a lot of control over the final product and each scale near the top of the body is actually several colors layered....it makes the scales so shimmery!

mermaid m,

Thank you! hmmm....cost....I spent a lot of money! I will have to sit down and figure this out so I don't miss anything. There were a lot of random supplies in addition to the usual ones. I'll post this soon.

julz,

I would love to go to merfest! I'm going to try....but right after Christmas is a tough time. I'm usually broke after Christmas. I hope you get your tail done in time. I'm really excited to see your progress!!

kassandra,

"goddess of tailmaking" :) maybe closer to persistent plebeian, but goddess sounds sooooooo much better!

Toxotes,

I decided to go with silicone because I really wanted those "is that a real mermaid?" moments. I'm going to be working with kids and I really want them to believe in something unbelievable. So many kids don't believe in anything anymore....even as young as kindergarten they stop believing in Santa, the Easter bunny, the tooth fairy....it's just so much fun to believe and so many kids miss out on that. I'm going to do my best to make kids think I'm real because even if they dont believe, it's so much fun just to wonder what if? :)

Aziara,
No trade secrets here! I don't mind sharing information....I learned probably 75% of what I needed to know about making a tail from other threads on here.

Painting is the fun part and I'm really glad I hand painted my tail. I'm actually in the process of making a scale bra top to match my tail. I'm going to pay attention while I'm painting so I can figure out the best way to explain what works and what doesn't. Just give me a day or two and I will post some things that worked for me...and a few of the things that I did wrong in the beginning! :)

i haven't been swimming in my tail yet.....but if things go as planned I'm headed to a great waterfall soon to take some pictures! The water isn't very deep (3ft at most) but its a beautiful spot so I'm pretty excited!

I'm hoping to get my scale top done tonight...if not then I will just wear my shell top. I'd love to bring both though!

Thanks seraphina and deep blue!

Mizuko,

i know how you feel....it was so hard to take that first step. I was so apprehensive and so scared that I would screw up. The funny thing is though....I did screw up....several times actually. The scale mold didn't have enough release agent and was a mess, piecing together the body of the tail was rough at times, I didn't consider the possibility of cure inhibition with the monofin, I painted too much silicone in a few sections.....I could go on and on and on...... The point is that despite all my mistakes it turned out ok. I learned from my mistakes and one of the most important things I learned was that you should consider your options and take time to think! Not sure about something? Sleep on it. I had a really hard time coming back from my disaster with the paint not sticking around the monofin. I didn't know what to do or how to fix it. I was really discouraged and it was really tough to go on with this project. However, I realized that I really had two options at that point: cut the tail apart at the ankles and replace the entire fluke, or attempt a patch on the fluke and on the ankle area. I decided that this tail would be my learning tail and I was ready to experiment with the patches. (I honestly couldn't handle the thought of just remaking the fluke...silicone is just so expensive!)

It's completely normal to be apprehensive....i certainly was! I spent a ton of money on silicone and other supplies and it was always in the back of my mind....what if I screw up?....what if this doesn't work and I don't wind up with a tail?...what if I wasted all that time and money?.....

I realized that even though I screwed up, I learned so much from every mistake! Even if this tail had turned out to be a complete failure it still would have been worth it because of the knowledge I gained. It also is cheaper to try and screw up than it would be to pay for a class! I know you can do it Mizuko. You might make a few mistakes and you will definitely have a few moments when you figure out a better way to do something, but your tail is going to be beautiful!! If I can help you in any way, let me know. I'm happy to answer any questions!

I went to a waterfall yesterday and my boyfriend took a bunch of pictures!! The water was so cold my feet went numb after awhile, but it was so much fun. The tail did great in the water and the fluke is so flowy! I'll post pictures soon!

I love working with silicone and I want to make more tails for myself. If I could sell a tail or two it would help me afford to make myself another tail (or two!) I swear making tails is addictive!!

jazz,

you're so sweet! I can't wait to see your next tail!

Oh my goodness it's amazing! I still cannot believe this is your first tail!! Congratz Jessica!
You may have mentioned this but I have a question, how much (approx) did it cost to create this beauty? Thanks :)

I finally sat down and added the cost up:

45 monofin
400 2 gallons of dragonskin silicone ( i still have 3/4 of a gallon left over though)
25 pigments ( this is an estimate....I bought three sample packs, but only used about ten different colors)
75 10 lbs of monster makers clay
150 shell shock and release agent
20 circle cutters
15 foam sheets
50 random supplies : measuring cups, paper plates, plastic spoons, paintbrushes, paper towels, sandpaper, buckets, clothespins, posterboard, tape...etc...you use a lot of random supplies for a project like this

total: $780

I think I remembered everything. Since I have silicone left over, I can make the next tail for much less than I spent on this one.

Thanks so much Ariel! I'm really happy with how my tail turned out and I had so much fun at the waterfall.

Pearlie,

i used dragonskin 10 medium. Medium gives you plenty of time and you should be fine with it. It takes about 7 hours to cure so you have plenty of time for mixing, pouring and painting.

And I'M envious you have a waterfall so close at hand!! What a beautiful location :) I'm not near anything like that, I *had* to go to another country to use one, haha! Mermaid twins....now we just need matching tails :) if you're ever down south we should do a photoshoot in each others tails.....it would be funny to post the pics and play "guess which Jessica" on here :)

I swear I'm going to the Highland games next year at grandfather mountain and I'm going to talk a beefy stud in a kilt into taking pictures with me in my tail. :) It sucks that it was so cold! Scotland is beautiful!! Maybe someday I'll get there....

The waterfall is about an hour from me and its one of my favorites! It was completely deserted when I was there...just so beautiful... I love to hike and really love hiking to waterfalls. I have a list of places I'm taking my tail...I just wish it wasn't so cold!!

Jadestone-I see you're in the great lakes pod. Are you anywhere near N. Michigan? Black Rocks at Presque Isle is just outside Marquette. I went there once while visiting family. I think it would be a great photoshoot location, however, you'll probably have to wait until summer, and there's always a few people around, so you won't have it to yourself . http://mingle8.files.wordpress.com/2011/01/black-rocks-on-presque-isle-marquette-mi.jpghttp://www.michigan.org/blog/wp-content/uploads/blackrocks-beach-presque-isle-marquette-mi1.jpg

It couldn't be much worse than the waterfall I was in! The water was so cold my feet went numb. The things we put up with just to get pictures in our tails....:)

i know this is a little late, but here are a few things I learned about painting silicone:

You need to use powdered pigments and be careful not to add too much pigment or the silicone might not cure. It worked best for me to mix paint in small batches...one teaspoon of part a and one teaspoon of part b. it worked best for me to mix the pigment in one part first...it doesn't really matter which part, but I usually did part b...and then mix the two parts together. It's VERY important to mix thoroughly!!

One of the most important things I learned was to paint silicone in thin layers. This is most important for the scales because the silicone will settle in the points of the scales and you will lose the shape of the scale.

paintbrushes....I used nail brushes I found on amazon (these were brushes used in nail salons) because they were cheap and small. My favorite is a fan shaped brush because it covers the scale nicely when painting. It's important to take a paper towel and wipe the paintbrush after each use to remove excess silicone. You can't get rid of all the silicone, but you can take scissors and trim any excess silicone off before the next use.

Blending colors....since it will probably take several layers to achieve the color you want and make your tail not see through, blending colors isn't too hard. I overlapped my colors by several inches in order to have a nice transition between colors. For example....I painted a layer pink on top of the edges of the blue and then a little blue on top of the pink.

When you hand paint silicone, it's also very important to let layers cure thoroughly before adding another layer. Otherwise the partially cured silicone layer will pull off and make a gunky mess.

with powdered pigments its very easy to blend colors together to get the shade/tint you want. You can add white to lighten a color or silver, gray or black to make a darker shade. I used I think five different shades of purple and a little dark blue on my fluke to get the shade I wanted. I just added a bit of each color to the silicone until I got the color I liked.

i think this just about covers everything....if anyone has any questions just ask!

Thank you for all the painting info, Jessica!! :D I'm going to attempt to both hand-paint and air brush my tail!

Would you mind sharing a little more on how you did your seams (if you dont mind! hehe!)? It looks difficult to do the second side once one side is seamed!

PearlieMae
10-17-2013, 01:07 AM
A teaspoon of parts A and B, but how much pigment did you add? Have you used anything to thin the dragonskin you're painting with? I read that a few drops of glycerin per ounce can thin and slow the curing process a bit, but I think that was for silicone caulk.

I'm very interested in your seam info as well! Thanks!

Jessica
10-17-2013, 09:24 AM
I will post some info about how I did my seams soon! I have to go see what pictures I have to explain my process!

Pearlie,

Pigment for two teaspoons of silicone...I didn't measure...I just eyeball it... but the ratio is 10:1. Ten parts silicone to one part pigment. I'm actually doing my color tests for the new tail and painting my scale top later today, so I will take a few pictures for you when I'm mixing paint! You will be able to tell if you added too much pigment...it won't mix as well and look almost chalky when you mix it. If this happens, don't panic! Just add an extra teaspoon of a and b and mix it up.

Would some scale painting pictures help? I can take a few today if you want

dragonskin is pretty runny so I didn't need to thin it with anything. If you're going to airbrush, you will need to use a thinner...jazz used an airbrush so she is probably the best person to ask. I like hand painting....I think it gives you more control. I could just imagine me airbrushing...I sneeze or my kids start distracting me and oops! My entire tail is purple! I think it would be really easy to make a big mistake!

jayy,
i was planning on making another tail for myself first, but I got an offer from another mer on here!!! I'm making Eva a tail and if everything goes well, I'm might sell another. I'm still learning and my tail isn't perfect! It definitely has a few areas I plan on improving on and I'm so excited to be working on another tail! I'm a perfectionist and I can't wait to get better at making tails.

Pictures would be awesome! The more, the better! I won't be airbrushing, (even though I have about a dozen different airbrushes!), I like the control of handpainting, and I plan on doing may steps of color on each scale.

The seams info would be greatly appreciated as well! Thank you so much!
