View Full Version : Finiding my Mer-name...

I have a few ideas as to what name I would like for my mermaid persona, all from different cultures, but mostly Japanese (yes, yes, I know I'm not Japanese; that doesn't mean my mermaid persona can't be). I've tried to pick names that aren't already used in the mermaid community and that mean something to me. Please let me know which one(s) you like best!

I'm planning on having a cherry-blossom tail, thus all the Japanese names

(For Japanese names, breakdowns of the syllables/kanji are given so you can mix and match meanings)

Mizuki (Japanese): "Beautiful Moon", other kanji spellings include: Mizu = water; ki= hope, tree, radiance, valuable, noble; mi = sea/ocean, beautiful

Miyu (Japanese): mi = beautiful/truth; yu = gentleness/superiority/tie/bind/evening

Miu (Japanese): "beautiful feather"

Miki (Japanese): "beautiful chronicle"

Misaki (Japanese): "beautiful blossom"

Mio (Japanese): "beautiful cherry blossom" or "beautiful thread"

Michiko (Japanese): mi = beautiful; chi = wisdom/intellect; ko = child

Manami (Japanese): mana= love/affection; mi = beautiful/sea, ocean

Kumiko (Japanese): ku = long time; mi = beautiful; ko = child

Hiroko (Japanese): hiro = tolerant,generous/abundant/prosperous; ko = child

Sakura (Japanese): cherry blossom

Sakurako (Japanese) cherry blossom child

Merope (lost sister of the Pleiades in mythology)

Dryope: sometimes thought of as a nymph/one of the Pleiades and lover of Hermes

Mira (MEE- rah, Sanskrit for 'ocean')

INDU (इन्दु): Hindi name derived from the Sanskrit word for the moon, meaning "bright drop."

Feedback would be appreciated! I'm drawn to moon names because I've always had an affinity with the moon, then when I was at Burning Man, I got my "Burner name" of Moonlight from some very wonderful people in a very magical way...

I think Sakura is pretty. I think there's already a Mizuko.

Thanks everyone for the speedy responses! This is really helpful, I'm so indecisive...

Haha, one of my uncles said Michiko fits me to a tee, because I'm allllways trying to learn new things, and I'm perpetually child-like haha.

I had noticed there was a Mizuko here, and I thought if I decided I really liked Mizuki, I'd ask her about it.(I'm also in a way, way far away pod from her) As seaglass siren said, Mizuki and Mizuko are two totally different things... Mizuko does literally mean "water child", but uhm... It has a very different meaning in Japan, eh heh heh... ^^;

And haha, now Hanako has to be added to my list of possibilities! :P

Tsuki (Moon) ins't on the list (which I find to be such a super pretty sounding word)

Out of the list you prefer though, I like Miu and Sakura. ^^ Best wishes!

Oh yeah, I'm pretty sure I had Tsukiko on the list somewhere, my document was all screwed up and unorganized, LOL! SO I was typing it all out since copy+paste wasn't working... :P

Between you guys and FB, I've got it narrowed down to three (Miyu, Mio, and Michiko). I'll have it figured out shortly! Thank you everyone for your help!

Hi I personally think you should search the names you want in mernetwork as a few of those names are actually taken like (Mine lol Mermaid Sakura ) & Mermaid Mizuko :P
your name should be a reflection of who you are and what your trying to accomplish in your mermaid journing :D

Mermaid Sakura: I still haven't figured out how to search all the members on here yet, all I can search by is posts. I did know there was a MizuKO, MizuKI is a totally different name, which I've decided not to go with because many people can't tell the difference, even though there is a huge, huge, HUGE difference. I'd looked through so many posts and not seen a Sakura either, possibly because you joined very recently as well and have only posted twice, and this is the very first time you posted. So I'm sorry for not even knowing you were here.

Sakura was on my list because it is indeed where I am heading with my mermaid journey and future silicone tail, as well as it was a name a nice Japanese man who was a regular at my restaurant gave me. So it wasn't just an arbitrary name choice LOL! But as you can see, Sakura is not in my top three list, so no worries there!

Picking a name can be hard that is why i just went with my usual nickname but when asked my mer-story i just say my given mermaid name is "Cronus".

It IS hard, there's so many I like... *pulls hair in frustration* But I also had to think about what will be easiest for kids and potential clients to say and remember :P I like some hard-to-pronounce names LOL!

Mizu. Short, simple, sweet. It rolls off the tongue easy, has a nice ring to it, kids can remember it, adults cant, and probably cant say it.

Thanks for the input, WittleNoob!

I actually ended up going with Miyu, which is pretty similar-sounding and also rolls off the tongue nicely (I think)! I think it fits my mer-sonality a bit better, and one of the kanji you can use to spell it means "sea" :) I still haven't decided which Kanji to spell it with, there's so many options there as well, haha! But I know I want it to be Miyu.
