Mermaids and sign language

I saw a discussion of sign language and divers signs in another thread and thought it needed it's own post. :)

While fleshing out my "mersona" for once I get my tail and kids start asking questions, I decided it would make sense if mermaids had two languages: one would be an underwater language that conveniently doesn't work above water, and the other would be all hand signals like sign language. I knew scuba divers already had special signs for certain sea creatures (seen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SzJ127ZynsM), so why not mermaids?

That's awesome! I used to know a little sign language, enough to communicate with the two deaf girl in my summer reading group who loved my mickey mouse watch :P I'd love to learn again, it kind of comes in handy when you least expect it!

I'm 85% Deaf on one ear, 65% Deaf in the other, so I wear hearing aids and read lips. But I stll hear a bit- I miss out on a little, but I consider myself as being Hearing, because that's the world I grew up in.

The second link to to a forus that I think you would find interesting. Most colleges offer ASL as a course, or if you would like some one on one learning, hire a private teacher.

I had ASL 1 when I was a sophmore in high school, and the teacher was so funny! On the first day of school, everyone believed that he was Deaf, so we all took advantage of that. Turns out that he was hearing and wanted for us to know what it was like to be around a Deaf person!

One of my close friends growing up was deaf so I learned some sign language, I can get by in a conversation, but I really like sign dancing which is mixing dancing and sign language together to create a cool artistic piece. I tell kids that we use sign language when large predators are nearby in the ocean as our way of communicating under water (like dolphins) would attract said predator. :-)

Angelstarfish, thanks for the links! I'm just started out so everything helps. As it happens my college does have an ASL class, but it's in the evenings when I'm working. I can't quite justify the money for a private teacher or tutor, so I'm probably on my own. I don't intend to become fluent though, just enough of the basics so I can stumble my way through a conversation, lol.

I took up ASL years ago, and still remember some. I had the opportunity a couple years ago to go diving with a couple who were deaf. We had such an advantage over everyone who couldn't speak. We were chit-chatting away, talking about all the fish and animals we saw. I was able to teach them about animals underwater, it was great! :)

Has anyone else read the Sacred Breath series by Nadia Scrieva?

In her books the mermaids have their own sign languauge they use underwater, and among themselves when on land when they don't want to be overheard.

I'm wondering whether any mers have worked on developing a common underwater sign language.

One of the things about sign languages is the fact that there are so many of them, such as American Sign Language, British Sign Language, Japanese Sign Language, many of which are mutually unintelliginable, while many strange mutual intelligibilities exist (such as the fact that the sign languages spoken in Francophone countries in West Africa are mutually intelligible with American Sign Language)

With mers coming from all over the world, would it be worth developing some sort of hybrid "Mer Sign Language" or would just picking one with lots of instructional materials on the internet be the way to go? Or is this a pipe dream anyways?

I think that's really interesting and could be a useful thing... Something to keep in mind though is that sign language is cultural language of people who are often disrespected and ignored (deaf and hard of hearing). The reason there are so many versions is the same reason there are so many different spoken languages; just because of geographical separation. Deaf people that I have had conversations with find it very offensive when people take sign language classes and then use what they learned for the sole purpose of signing to other hearing people when they're supposed to be silent or across the room and things like that. Learning a language should be meant to immerse yourself in a culture and be able to communicate with new people. I think it might be seen as disrespectful for hearing people to invent a new form of language that is used by deaf people to communicate in a world that ignores them. So I do think this is a great idea, but I also don't know if it's the best thing to call it sign language. Maybe just a set of gestures like divers use underwater to keep safe.

Just today, I was again thinking about the sad missed opportunity that is one universal global language, which could have existed if instead of every country making their own, ONE international standard sign language had been invented :(

That is the thing that deterred me from learning a sign language properly, because which one would I learn- German, English, Japanese, Chinese version?

So I went with my own individual one.
I considered incorporating diver signs but decided against it (because why would mermaids use human diver sign language? :p)

It would be really cool if mers would make up on the said missed opportunity, and arrive on a standardized mer sign language, but it's not likely to happen for probably the same reasons why the "normal" sign languages all went different ways:
who would decide which version should be the standard?
Would everyone be willing to learn that version, or rather think the one they already have is better?
Then there'd be the peeps who feel offended by this and that, similarities with things they perceive as their own or as "cultural appropriation", and so on.

The best I can see for a MSL is pods and groups of mers who frequently work or swim together arriving on the same standard.

Wonderful idea! I tried learning some years ago, but my dyslexia (mild though it is) would have me mixing up all the signs X_x I'd just confuse some poor person trying to use it :P

My high school friend taught me some sign language millions of years ago, but the only one I can remember is clapping. I would love to learn it in a proper class, but I'm not working atm and even if I was, I don't see how I can use admin skills with sign language.

How the language could be taught (videos posted here, seminars at mer-meetings?)
Whether there should be a language regulator like many languages have (such as Spanish, French & Russian) or should it be a libertarian free-for-all (like English, for example?)

I am the president of the ASL club at my school, and I have a few friends in the Deaf community as I frequent the Deaf Chats in my area. If you want to learn how to communicate in ASL, Deaf Chats are a great place to learn.

I wonder how many signs are cross-language?

Well, from what I've read, and been told, American Sign Language was founded in the 1800's by a professor from France who introduced French Sign Language to America at a college for the deaf.

Since then both ASL and FSL have changed and diverged. I've only seen and learned a bit of ASL (which is used in Anglophone Canada) but never any FSL. Some people claim, though, that about half of ASL and FSL are comprehensible to each other, and French and American people can learn each other's sign languages relatively easily.

I think that it would help to base it on American Sign Language. Also, since this would be a new language and a constructed language and since we all live pretty far apart, there probably should be a regulator, at least in the beginning. That way, we could prevent different dialects of mer sign language.

maybe to begin with, but even ASL has dialects. I think that's part of what makes it super cool and unique - it evolves over time to fit the needs of the signer. But it could get super confusing xD

Mermaid Kali how have we not met yet? I was going to school for ASL/English interpreting. I've since changed my major but still use ASL as often as I can and love the Deaf community!

Sorry for reviving this dead thread but anyone know any free resources for learning ASL? I've been losing my hearing for years now and finally i am nearly completely dead I my right ear and would love to learn so i can communicate with others when/if my hearing completely goes and i can communicate with ppl and children who need it. But i don't have the time to take classes at my uni since I'm in my last year and hauling tail to finish

Hey, Mermaid Momo!

I've been learning/teaching ASL for a few years, and I've always found the absolute best resource to be in-person communication. The second best is the Internet! I would recommend googling individual words and watching ASL-related YouTube videos, then once you have a basic grasp, see if you can find a Deaf Chat near you. You can also watch Switched at Birth, but depending on where you live, there may be some regional signs that differ because Switched at Birth was filmed in California. Always remember to try to pick up as much as you can from those who are Deaf. Even if you know a different sign for something, it's best to be able to know them all.

Momo, I dont know exactly where you are in the valley but there is a Deaf/ASL Meetup I believe weekly at Green and Nami on 7th St. The best way to learn is to interact with fluid users of any language.
