@Moonlight Mermaid. I know what you mean, it seems to be geared a little more to an "older teen"audience and I love the hair too it is so simple and elegant. I have to say not 4 episodes in, Nixie was my favorite. She is so open minded and witty, much like the fairy she is named after.

I'm starting this Mako Mermaids tonight! :) I loved h2o when I was a kid, but back then we didn't have dvr so I missed so many episodes, got lost, and then I was all who is this Charlotte girl and where is that other mermaid that used to be on??!

I'm 6 episodes in. Its pretty good, although I mostly like it for the tails and the underwater stuff. A lot of the writing seems weak, and the mythology is pretty unclear to me- how do they reproduce if there are no mermen besides Zac? Also, what exactly are their powers? Since when can mermaids turn invisible?

Oh, and I didn't realize how much of a hippie I've become until I got annoyed that Zac is constantly drinking water, but he drinks from non-reuseable bottles. He's a goddamn merman, you think he'd realize that he's going to be drinking a lot of water. How hard is it to go get a nalgene or something?

BTW, how do people talk about shows on netflix that get uploaded in huge batches? How do you discuss stuff if some people have already seen everything, and some people have only started? I want to talk about specific things from specific episodes but I don't want to give anything away to people who havent watched as much, and I dont want to have people spoil stuff I haven't seen.

As for the powers it is hinted that they have all the powers through out the show and the fact that they need the moon ring for magic means they may not be able to use the powers till they are done with "mermaid school" as for the invisible part that ties into lore. In all lore it is never mentioned how merpeople reproduce weather H2O or real mythology and as for the invisible thing, merfolk are fairy, and all fairy have the power to glamure (to create an illusion so real to fool a passer by) such as appearing invisible. As for the bottled water I have to agree with you on that one lol. your have become water encarnent, Zack, so start acting like you want to save the ocian and invest in a reusable bottle haha

Don't get me wrong, it cutes me half to death....but I second the weak writing. H2O's writing was pretty good and never confused the ever loving snot out of me - I mean, it won multiple awards for being outstanding. And I'm not ashamed to say that it was capable of being touching enough to make me tear up a few times (don't pretend you didn't get a little dust in your eye when Lewis came down those stairs after the girls graduated!).

Now, now, there'll be none of that ;) No show gets a free pass on lazy writing, not even shows meant for toddlers. Lest we forget, Avatar the Last Airbender, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Sailor Moon, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, along with many other greats, are also shows for kids; also Adventure Time might be one of the most brilliantly written TV shows on the tube right now (you only wish your imagination was that awesome!) :) I would add Naruto and Dragon Ball Z, were it not for all that damn filler. As for reproduction, I assumed they chose mermaids to sing to humans to mate with them under very special circumstances until the last episode I watched. Now I'm just as confused as everyone else. Their powers have gone from a writing tool to kind of this easy out from sticky situations that would have been more interesting if they'd only had one or two limited powers.

:lol: Reproduction never crossed my mind. It never occurred to me that reproduction in fish form would be necessary for the youngsters. No I am pretty sure that will not be addressed and I don't personally see it as even anything they need to discuss.
Regarding powers, Zach has some powers doesn't he? I will have to watch some episodes again to look for powers.

I dunno, even if I were 12, I'd be really confused about how more mermaids got made without mermen or with the mermaids being clueless about moon pool mers like it almost never happens. Even in kids shows about humans, the fact that reproduction exists is in the context with romance, and that it's just a given.

It's not that it needs to be discussed. More like it's a plot hole that throws me out of the universe a bit because it requires you to suspend disbelief because nothing can be assumed in a basic universal function that all higher organisms go through. Harry Potter can sell anyone on a magical world because the writing is complete, and whatever the writer doesn't come out and tell you, she gives you a tiny bit to where you can assume the rest. We don't need to know how wizards make more wizards. It's not even a question because enough is there to assume. Here, it bothers some people because its a basic thing about being alive that's missing, and no dots are there to connect, so it makes the mermaids harder to "swallow."

At the very most I suspect one brief sentence may be offered very abstractly explaining how mers have merkids. I imagine we are to understand that these creatures live an extremely long time if they are even mortal. Perhaps they would have become extinct after having killed off all mermen to avoid an apocalypse. Now that Zach has been created, I suspect they will have to revisit the Utopian matriarchal peaceful culture vs warring patriarchal power struggle dilema.

Do I sense that some are suspecting that a little merbaby will be created before series end? Hum... that would be a twist. I'm just not sure if it is where they want to go with a children's program. It could be seen as encouraging youngsters to have kids too young. I doubt that is what they want to promote.

I'm not asking for mersex to be explained explicitly or even discussed. I don't think a diagram is needed...just....dots...to connect. Lots of kids shows have weird creatures where the writers give you a couple dots to connect about their basic workings without even alluding to "doing it," since you can just connect the dots and color it in with your own imagination. That's just good writing in a complete and believable world, whether it's rated Y or MA.

Like other people said, its not like I want there to be a sex scene or something, I'd just appreicate it if they could clear up something that right now, makes zero sense. Are the mermaids immortal or something? Do they reproduce asexually somehow? Sirena has a sister, which just made me more confused. Do they have families? Parents? How does it work?

Also, after finishing episode 7 I can say that the writing really leaves a lot to be desired. The fact that Zac has this huge blessing/curse, and (aside from going swimming occasionally) does absolutely nothing differently in his life is really boring, and unrealistic. Also, the fact that three incredibly suspicious girls started following him after he got his tail, and ask questions about Mako Island, doesn't raise any alarms is annoying. How could anyone NOT make even the slightest connection? And the mermaids aren't even subtle. All they do is talk about fish and call themselves 'human girls' and sing about being mermaids and pay for things with sunken treasure. It would be really satisfying if one of the characters just walked up to them and was like, "Seriously, who are you? What are your last names?"

Even though I was sucked into it more than I originally thought I do agree with your above comments, malinghi. There were a lot of holes within the reasoning of the characters themselves. The only sensible persons seemed to be Rita and Cam (Zach's best friend).

I would at least like them to hint to how the pods came about, or something. I would have liked more information regarding that world, but the series seemed to just skip over it and head straight towards Zach being a merman and all.

i'm so glad to know that this is up on netflix now. i fell in love with h2o and heard they were making this show over a year ago but haven't been able to find anything else about it since. it may not have the strongest writing due to being a kids show but that doesn't take away from the entertainment factor. also love the tails they made for the show

Okay, I'll bite. What is this weird association some people make between weak writing and kid's shows? Has anyone never seen Avatar: The Last Airbender, Adventure Time, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Naruto, One Piece, 90% of all Disney movies, The Dark Crystal, the first Land Before Time Movie, etc etc etc etc....Yes, the show is cute, adorable even, but weak writing is weak writing. Some of the best masterpieces of writing and imagination that stand the test of time have historically been in kid's shows ;) Alternately, I've watched seasons of Power Rangers that had tighter writing.

Yeah, but I think that doesn't negate the fact that the majority of kids shows are weak. Adults have a larger repertoire to be able to say, "I've seen that a million times" or "They're SO copying (show)," and kids are more likely to suspend disbelief and less likely to question plot holes. So it's easier for writers to get lazy. And don't even get me started on the horrible "artwork" in many kid shows... /endrant

I agree, back in my children's show days, the show taught lessons of character and courage and strength and trueness to ones self and to show love and compassion above all. Courage the cowardly dog, rugrats, wild thornberry's, carebears. Ah, BraveHeart the lion bear was one of my favorite childhood characters!! Now a days, it's hard to find shows with these meanings, I was watching a Disney show with my little cousin, a 7 year old, and when they made a JOKE about anorexia, he laughed along. Nickelodeon shows are getting bad too, glorifying sassy and rude characters. Shows like h2o and mako are so classic and they don't have such awful underlyings that kids subconsciously pick up on, like that they need to be popular to be happy, or they'll only be cool and funny if they're rebellious and fake trip and scream really loudly..

Caltuna I think they're over exaggerating a bit. Just my personal opinion. I saw both H20 and Mako Mermaids so far and I actually LIKED both of them! But I viewed them for what they were... just a bit of escapism and fun. I didn't expect much but was pleasantly surprised and entertained by both.

Now now, I don't think Mako Mermaids is horrifyingly bad. It's....OK, I'll put it this way. In real life, I have a cat and a dog. They have different personalities. H2O is like my dog: sweet, likable, bouncy, relatable, smart, and all around a great "what-it-is." Mako Mermaids is like my cat: cute, likable, engaging, but a bit...how should I say?....dumb, and constantly does things that simply make no sense whatsoever and without explanation.

Doesn't mean I don't like my cat. He's just a little soft in the head >^..^<

Just to add two cents to the discussion...IMO Mako Mermaids isn't bad, there's just something about it overall that makes it not quite as engaging and likeable as H2O. What that "thing" is is certainly debatable...tired and/or boring plotlines, plotholes (of which H2O had some too of course), not as likeable characters, just to name a few potential issues...I personally can't really pin what it is that makes it not as enjoyable as H2O.

I think one thing is that the ensemble cast was really good (for the most part) in H2O, and you know you get those shows where you're like "I can't imagine anyone else in those roles"...well, Mako in a way is like seeing what the cast would be with other actors in the parts, and it just doesn't gel quite as well.

I watch H2O on a continual basis...seen all 3 seasons over and over, and I'll put an episode on when I've got a spare half hour. With Mako, I'm really glad I have gotten to see it and I look forward to the rest of the season in September, but I don't have the urge to watch it again and again.

I appreciate them both, H20 and Mako. I'm going to say they both have their flaws, but I love each of series understanding that they are both different. Even though they supposedly take place around the same area, I'm pretty sure the pod would've had something to say about season 3 of H20.

I can tear it apart through english major skills, but in honest who would want to really do that?

Now I would like to point out that it seems like mermaids always have an element of escapism, change into a different world, a different life. Changing mermaid to human, or human to mermaid.
