Do you love Disney's The Little Mermaid- or do you hate it?

I personally think that Ariel was being a shellfish idiot when she made the bargin with Ursula- she put her people in danger and Prince Eric ended up saving the merfolks and his people. Not a very good storyline- I personally hate those stories of "damsels in distress"- they irritate be to Hong Kong and back.

So I want to hear your thoughts on this_ love or hate?

She didn't know though :| people make sacrifices for love all the time and well... This just happens to take the stupidity cake. Although there's more reasons why I like it rather than hate it.

It teaches parents you have to let your child go at some point.
It teaches people not to bargain with bad people and not give in to pressure
it teaches children not to give up on their dreams if they want something badly enough

I love it, but I take it for what it is and don't over think it. :)

I like the story a lot better than the movie because it appeals to my Persian-ness (stories of unrequited and tragic love and ultimate sacrifice, blah blah blah... common themes in Persian love stories, I can't get enough of them). The movie took away from the lessons that could have been learned by giving it a happy ending, which is, I guess, my fault found with it. Because any other fault I find with it, I'm finding with the story in general rather than the animated film.

That said, it's Disney, and Disney's big thing is ending stuff "happily ever after" even if they don't. It was kind of nice and cute to see her come out the winner in the end when all the other versions end so sad.

The thing about Disney is that it's Disney. They like to make people happy. Even just for a little while when the world around you is so sad and gives you a sort of escape from reality. They like to show that in your worst you'll still triumph and have your own happy ending one day. It allows people to keep dreaming because for some, dreams are all they have. "the dreams that you wish will come true" !! "when you wish upon a star, makes no difference who you are, anything your heart desires will come to you!" as long as you keep the hope and faith and love and kindness in your heart alive!

I love Disney and I love the original story (Hans Christian Anderson's the little mermaid). They are both completely different, yet way similar (obviously) And as SeaGlass Siren said, Disney's job is to bring happiness to people everywhere with a bit of magic and pixie dust. It was a great story and I love the TV series that Disney did as well (the stories of Ariel a year before the movie timeline). So I think it is great. Ariel is and always will be my fave Disney Princess, followed very closely by Rapunzel!

I haven't seen any of the Disney cartoon movies in 50 years, but I guess I have to watch a few if I am going to start doing some dry events. Kids are way to knowledgable and you can't bluff your way past them! LOL! So off I go to find Nemo, Ariel, etc. before I mermaid on...

My parents took me to see the movie when it came out at the cinema when I was 6 and I LOVED it, so much so I became a bit obsessed lol and obviously my mermaid obsession hasn't gone since I've gotten older. So I personally will always love this film, as I feel it's apart of me and my life :)

I love this^
When you watch the little mermaid, or any Disney movie as a little kid, you typically don't over analyze it, because that takes the "magic" away! I love the little mermaid, despite how watered down it is from the original fairytale. I don't think I as a little kid I would've wanted to watch the mermaid kill herself, anyway.

I really hate when people think that Ariel gave up her tail for a guy. She was interested in the human world before she came across Eric. He was just like the icing on the cake. She sacrificed everything she knew so that she could explore the land she had come to love. She just wanted to be happy without being ridiculed and held back by her family and the sea. Ursula was a bitter person from the start and if it wasn't through Ariel, she would have eventually found a different way to take over the kingdom.

But that's just Disney's version. The original is so much more heartbreaking and thoughtful. It's also gay allegory, which seems to be a little known fact but really enhances the story. In the original, not only does the mermaid give up her life in the sea but her life on land is full of pain. Literally. Every step she takes on her new feet was said to feel like she was stepping on a thousand knives. Yet she still danced and lived her new life to the fullest. When the prince ended up choosing a different girl over her, she considered saving herself (by killing him) but ultimately chose to sacrifice herself for his happiness.

The Little Mermaid is available to read online (http://www.online-literature.com/hans_christian_andersen/2084/), and I highly suggest everyone reads it!

Every Disney movie has a meaning. Ariel had one too. You just need to look for the deeper meaning, not the issues with the story. If you don't understand the deeper meaning then the story doesn't make any sense.
