So I'm Keri, 18, loved mermaids for a long, long time. When I was 11 I set up an account on 43things and it started my journey to becoming a mermaid! I made two tails, with fabric bought at Walmart. One was from blue satin, you can imagine how hard that was to swim, and it eventually ripped from the stitching, because it was so heavy when wet. Then I had a second, a black and silver polyester snake-print fabric. The fluke was not attached so I had trouble with it falling off when I swam. I used flippers instead of a monofin because my parents would never buy me a $50 monofin when I was in middle school haha. In year 9 I stopped swimming because my tails were shreds. Walmart stopped carrying fabric and there was nowhere to buy!
Now, I've graduated and I'm on my way to art school in less than a month! Ill have access to anything I could want or need, and one of my classes deals with sculpture from fabric that I may attempt to create a tail. I'm thinking neoprene and hand painted.

So if anyone would run me by some of the rule for posting, advice, ect., I'd be grateful! :)
Love and light

Hey Keri! I'm Kalani :) Here's the rules thread for ya: http://mernetwork.com/index/content.php?144-Rules2 Pretty standard, and Mernetwork can be very flexible with warnings, but it's kind of like a three (or two haha) strikes you're out kinda deal- unless you really do something bad, but I doubt you'd do that haha!

So enough with all the rules and stuff, thats never too fun. Anyways, I think that a painted neoprene tail would be great! I've made two, and Im planning to make another with the rest of the summertime. There are tons of threads for reference and I'm sure any mer would love to help!

Welcome Keri! You send off good vibes.
Something we love to do in the forum is show people our tail-making journey. It helps other mers with their own projects, because when someone runs into a problem, there are LOADS of people here with the answers, and then once you've learned what to do and what not, other people can learn from your past threads.

I can't wait to see what a brand new art student can come up with by way of tail-making. ^_^

Ooooo you're making me so excited!! I've drawn and painted myself as a mermaid many time, but it's usually just been fairly basic designs. I'm so excited to begin, but nervous as well. I love the h2o tails, but Hannah Fraser's first blue tail is my favorite. I think I want something similar to that, maybe different geometric patterns for scales. But I will definitely share my tail journey! Starting now, actually ;) thank you!
