Aloha! I'm Becca and I'm new to the site. I've been stalking/reading/teaching myself on this wonderful hobby and only now am taking it seriously enough to start budgeting for a practice tail and a serious mertail. Living in Hawaii, there isn't a whole lot to do (no, really!) except literally....go to the beach. I've never ever been a beach person (sand irritates me, and sun even more!), but I've always been a water person, and I just think that it's a shame that I live here and I don't do any swimming/appreciation of the ocean that's around me. I've been making the commitment to change all that, and grow past my minute frustrations regarding the sun and sand to see the water more often. I'm also incredibly out of shape (I run out of breath very easily) and don't have any active hobbies or sports. My passion is art and creating magic for children (my absolute dream is to be a character performer with Disney theme parks) and mermaiding looks to be the hobby that sums up all of these personal goals I want to set for myself! I can become more fit, more active, I can make a child's dream come true---as well as one of my own! And most of all, I can appreciate the ocean I'm surrounded by.

Less about my goals, and more about me! I'm an amateur illustrator and a barista. I loves anything DIY (I crochet, knit, sew/cosplay, weave, and many more!) and have several fashion dolls. I customize ooak Monster High Dolls that I sell/market to collectors. I am learning to sew for these dolls as well as my own (smaller bodies are so much harder!!) I live on the Big Island of Hawaii with my family. While I intend to leave (for California to work for the mouse!) I can't because of obligations (car payment, job, etc) just yet. Mermaiding, if it does become a passion of mine, I intend to make my second job in order to collect funds to leave and pursue my career as a character performer. I love that this hobby can be so fun, offering a creative outlet for my sewing and creating skills as well as providing practice in dealing with children and their parents as a make believe character/actress.

My tail in progress (first tail!) is a Mermaid Mahina tail (large, aqua colored) with a neoprene skin sewn for it. I intend on attaching sequins and other doodads in order to distract from it's obvious lack of being scaley like a real fish tail. :P I'm ordering the tail this week and looking at my local fabric choices before ordering fabric. Luckily for me, living in Hawaii, there is no shortage of faux pearls, sequins, shells, netting, etc available for me to make accessories with. Hopefully I can get some tips from all of you pros out there. I'm more than happy to trade and even supply others with materials like these if they're hard to find for you.

I can't wait to share my stories and journey with you all. I look forward to hearing your wisdom and I am so glad there are others out there who don't think that being a mermaid is something just for children.

Aloha! I am envious, I don't think my sewing skills are quite up to making my first tail! I like the idea of sequins and such to personalize a store-bought one, though! I'll look forward to seeing the 'before' and 'after' pictures! ;)

I don't think mine are either, but I'll never know unless I try! I didn't think I'd be good enough to sew a princess dress....but I did! You'll never know until you try.
