Hello from Iran

Ok, not really... I live in California now :)

But originally I'm from Iran - so I'm going to apologize right here and right now in this introduction if I ever say something stupid either here or in the future, it's likely to be my English had a temporary failure! (English is my third communicative language, so it can be a bit of a hurdle for me at times)

Um, so... Let's see, where to start....

Ok, so my real name is Shahrzad. (Yes, 1001 Nights status... Please don't call it Arabian Nights to me, or mix me up with Arabs and Arabic... There's very few things I'm touchy about, but being confused for something I'm not, that is one of them.)

The reason I picked Anahita for my mer-name is because I'm Zoroastrian, and Anahita is a guardian angel, specifically, the guardian angel of the waters. I couldn't pass that up; what a perfect name for a Zoroastrian mermaid!

I think I've been in love with mermaids since before I can even remember. Either because I loved them, or I loved them because, but my very first doll as a baby was a mermaid my mother made me (which I still have to this day, over two decades passed and it's still on my bed with the matching blanket!)

Other things about me...

I'm a historical costumer (though I do other costumes too, because I just like having pretty things!), and I usually work as a living history reenactor. And I sometimes work as a cultural adaption coach with my cousin when she needs extra "hands on deck" and her groups get too big. I am also a musician and classical dancer, both for Persian and Indian. My main focus in ICD though has been kathak - with a bit of bharatnatyam, odissi, and kuchipudi. My instruments, setar, tar, daf, tonbak, kamancheh, ney, veena, unrelated being violin, flute, ukulele, guitar, bass, and piano. I used to pass a lot of time as an equestrienne; show jumping and dressage mainly.

Sometimes I like to compose my own ghazal and rubaiyat (traditional poetry in Farsi, Urdu, and Hindi) but they're terribly cheesy. All the same, they're fun to make, and even funner to sing and dance to.

So, those are just a few of the things I do. I do quite a bit more, but experience has told me to perhaps rein myself in a bit and let the rest leak out over time.

I have a wonderful khastegar who understands my artistic endeavors and so on... He's very sweet, and a great goofball. He often dresses up and goes to events with me (even though I can tell sometimes he doesn't like it, he's quite a trooper). We have a betta that we got for Persian New Year who we call Damdami (which means "moody" in Farsi, because his face is always so grumpy looking, and he tries to get us any chance we give him) and we have an itsy-bitsy dog, Parichehr; she seems to live entirely for food and cuddles.

I guess I should also give a background for my "views" on mermaids so I don't sound completely crazy later on ;) (I'm fascinated with the mythology and how they're portrayed in different cultures, and boy, are they portrayed differently!)

Where I come from we have two kinds. We have the "water people" and the "sea faeries". I would liken them to a mermaid and a siren, but it's been to my understanding one of those is seen as bad-luck to sailors, or dangerous? Not sure 100% since mythology evolves... Anyhow, in Persian folklore, both sea-faeries and water-people are seen as good luck, benevolent beings, and a promise for good sailing conditions.

So um, yeah, that's my introduction I guess!

That's funny you've had a client with the name before. So many girls in general have it, and even more my age group, yet for some reason I'm always surprised when I hear of another one! I'm also going to admit that I'm just absolutely terrible, because when I hear someone say "I-ran" I have been known to actively interrupt them and sing that Flock of Seagulls song (very dramatically I might add) :D I actually stole the idea from my cousin. When I was growing up and she first immigrated to the US, she used to do it a LOT just to make people go "Whaaa?" and then laugh awkwardly.

As for languages, I speak Farsi and Dari (which I usually count as "one" language though they're two very distinct dialects and not always mutually understood), French (I'd say is continental, because of the school I went to in NOLA, but I know I picked up an awful lot of patois and colloquialisms from outside of the school too.) and English frequently. Those are my first three languages. I also know simple Urdu, Hindi, a bit of Castillian, Turkish, Marathi and Gujarati. But those last four I'm really no good at.

It really depends on who is telling the story. They can have legs, or tails, or both. The common assumption is that they're tailed in the water, but after some time out on land they dry into legs. We have dugongs where I come from (Well, in the Persian Gulf we have dugongs, there's not really any in Shiraz that I know of ;) ), so I'm almost certain that had something to do with the mermaid myths. With that in mind I tend to assume any sea-person-faerie thing, unless the story teller says otherwise, has got a tail, and I seem to be not alone on this one (most depictions of them in Persian and Indian places show people with fish bodies rather than just people underwater... Though I do remember seeing a few of the latter once in a miniature.)

Oh, thank you. I never thought of myself as interesting... Although, I'm with myself all the time, so I guess that might be why. :)

I mostly do historical costumes (like, down to the method... pre-1840s is all done without the machine, weave and material can't be anomalous, nor can any embroidery, etc.) but I do sometimes make myself cosplay and fantasy clothes (I used to do a bit of comic-book based costuming, but it was just too time consuming, so now I stick with general stuff that I don't need to be meticulous about because it's not based on a specific character) It's nice to have something that is limitless (though I have notably less places to wear those outfits). I do costumes from all over. the "oldest" one I've worked on is one with my cousin for the 6th century BCE. It's a Persian Court Dress. So from there on I'm relatively well-versed. Anything prior I'm a bit fuzzy on, and I'm not too good with the costuming of the New World peoples, nor the Far East or Africa.

Ooh, yay, another meticulous costumer! I also hardly ever use my machine (I'm afraid of it LOL), so I have lots of different needles and thimbles scattered throughout the house haha... I love historically accurate clothing, and I love working with period-appropriate materials, they're so texturally pleasing! Traditional tools are so awesome, especially when you have no electricity or like to walk around with your project. I have a bunch of elk antler that I'm hoping to turn into needles, ear picks, bodkin needle, point turner/creaser, etc... I'm hoping to someday be the "royal seamstress" at a local Renaissance Faire :)

I love my machine when I can use it. but when I first learned it, it was a huge adjustment (my old machine had only done a handful of stitches and completely lacked a buttonhole function). Hand sewing definitely has its benefits, like you said, the ability to take it places is a plus. Though very few of my costumes go with me when they're "in progress" (they're usually too huge to maneuver comfortably).

Also, I LOVE that you know about antler/bone needles! I've never made my own, but I do have a few that I use for stitching down some of my older hairstyles. I love their pretty simplicity, so much so that sometimes when I do faerie costumes I use a few of them and leave them in my hair after I'm done stitching down my chignons. :)
