I've posted another scale painting video that includes a quick look at some of the progress I made last night on my tail! I was actually up until 2am to finish all the painting, ironing and adding of glitter. All I have left to do will be to glue in my flippers and add the trim on the bottom of my flukes. My Mum (mermaid assistant hee hee!) is going to pop by this afternoon to give me a hand with the last little details and to see the tail for the first time since I've finished the painting!

I am bringing it to show to a follower of my Underwater Tales blog who has been so loyal and comments on almost everything I post! She is having a gallery art related event tomorrow and I am going to surprise her! Then I will be posting pictures of the finished product!

Thanks! The whole tail has taken me roughly 3 months to complete. The scale painting definitely required some serious patience. I'm really happy with how it turned out!

Ok what type of paint are you using and what is the fabric?

It's neoprene and the paint is Permaset Aqua Fabric Screen Printing Ink.

Iona, did you see the thread I topped on painting neoprene? I went looking for information on painting it, but its scattered all over the site. Any way we could try to consolodate some of the information on painting neoprene in that thread?

I've been doing that on the Tailmaking Reference Index under Paint and Decor. I stopped stickying things here since there is so much, and most of the first page would end up being stickies. Not many people realize there is more than one page of topics in a category, so I would like to avoid that. Instead I add links to the Tailmaking Reference Index. I was actually planning on unsticking some things in this category so the index thread would be their go-to place to look, since it has links to all the great threads and way more than just the stickies.

I'm having some issues with painting. The only thing stores carry here in my area of Canada seems to be tulip, I'm using spandex and for some reason it doesn't blend so well. It leaves very harsh lines and I'm not sure how to make it smoother and fade into other colors.
It may have to do with it being spandex, as well I stuff it with pillows when I paint, should I use something that doesn't absorb so much?
Would fabric spray paint with a stencil be a better idea for spandex?

Try covering your pillows in garbage bags, then it won't absorb.
I don't know about this color, but something must be able to dilute it, try a little bit with water. If your color stays wet longer on the fabric it is easier
to work out the edges.
You could also use some kind of sponge to help fade and blend colors together.
