Cascada's Tail :D

Okay I couldn't think of a name for this thread so I named it Cascada's tail which sounds kinda goofy to me but whatevs lol. I'm starting my first silicone tail today! Well it's my first tail ever but yeah... I've already cut my scales and I'm about to sculpt my fluke. I'm so excited! I promise I'll post pics along the way and I'd be happy to answer any questions! Seeing all the beautiful tails being made, I decided to make my own. I hope this tails process will be speedy because I feel like summer is almost over. The stores already have back to school things, and I want to swim in my tail for the remainder of summer lol!
I'm not sure if I should pot my design or not because I don't want it to be stolen and I could copyright it but I really don't know how lol. O.o I can't believe how excited I am.... Lol Im bouncing off the walls.

So many circles! I used about 1200 and my hands were killing me by the time I was done. That's a huge accomplishment already! I'm very excited to see your progress!

what are you using for a mold box? I just used three sheets of posterboard taped together and then built a clay wall around the circles when I was done laying them out. This method worked well for me and it was cheap. Are you doing one scale sheet (one seam) or two sheets ( two seams)?

I'm doing one scale sheet. I think I've cut over 4,000 scales. As for my mold box I'm going to lay my scales out on a long table and placing a clay wall around it. I have waaaay to much clay so I'm trying to use it the best way I can.
Also how long did it take to sculpt your fluke? And what did you decide to do when you sandwiched your monofin inside your fluke? Did you seal around you're monofin or on it? Where did you place he drainage slits.

Are you using shell shock? If so, you need a barrier between the table and the shell shock. Posterboard is a cheap option or even cardboard. Trust me...you don't want shell shock stuck to your table. (Yes I learned this the hard way!)

it took me about a week to sculpt my fluke. I'm a perfectionist and I wanted to make it as symmetrical as possible ( this is very important since you have to sandwich them together)

heres what I posted in my thread about my fluke construction:

First, I centered the monofin on the bottom of the fluke. Then, I started at one corner of my fluke (the tip) and used a paintbrush to paint a thin layer of silicone on the bottom only. I lined the top of the fluke up with the corner and used clothes pins to pin it in place.


You really need an extra set of hands for this process. I worked in small areas and had my daughter hold the top of the fluke up while I painted more silicone on the bottom of the fluke. Don't bother putting silicone under the monofin.....it won't stick to the monofin anyway. I also used two rulers and a few plastic drinking straws to create drainage channels from the monofin to the end of the fluke. Don't put too much silicone near the rulers/straws or it will be difficult to remove them later.


After I pinned everything in place, I stacked textbooks on top. I also checked the fluke every five to ten minutes to make sure no silicone was leaking out or nothing slipped. Be careful if you use clothespins....I have a few little spots on the tip of my fluke that I have to fix because the silicone squished up between the clothespins.


Just be careful not to use too much silicone near the edges. If you do, it will squish out and make a mess of the edge of your fluke. It helps to run a paintbrush over the seam on the edge while the silicone is curing to prevent a messy edge.

I also took a picture of where my drainage slits are. I put the straws and rulers on top of the fluke so you can see where I put them.

Okay, I'm starting over on my sculpting because I didn't like it. This is the monofin I'm using: It's a finis wave. I don't know if I should sculpt over the ridges or if I should just leave it because sanding them down isn't an option for me lol. Theres a cap there which is about as big as quarter for size reference.
