So I know a lot of us like to create a different personality/name/ ect. I'm creating my tail base off of my birthstone, Aquamarine. So very light blues, greens, and darker details in gold. Structure and shine, crisp and pure. But I'm stuck with a name.
I feel weird taking the name Aquamarine, well, because there already WAS an aquamarine! Haha :) I looked up different names for the stone and got Beryl. But I don't really like the ring, it sounds more like berry, bright and colorful and that's not me. Advice? Suggestions?

You might find your name in the etymology?

"The name beryl is derived (via Latin: beryllus, Old French: beryl, and Middle English: beril) from Greek βήρυλλος beryllos which referred to a "precious blue-green color-of-sea-water stone"[1] and originated from Prakrit veruliya (वॆरुलिय*) and Pali veḷuriya (वेलुरिय); veḷiru (भेलिरु); from Sanskrit वैडूर्य vaidurya-, which is ultimately of Dravidian origin, maybe from the name of Belur or "Velur" in southern India.[4] The term was later adopted for the mineral beryl more exclusively.[2] The Late Latin word berillus was abbreviated as brill- which produced the Italian word brillare meaning "shine", the French word brille meaning "shine", the Spanish word brillo, also meaning "shine", and the English word brilliance.[5]"

you can always try the stone in a different language. or maybe something that started you with your decision to become a mermaid.

For me i feel in love with mermaids because of this book called "Ingo" it was centered around the Cornish mermaid so when I began looking at names I translated different terms dealing with the ocean until I found Hyli meaning salt water in Cornish. =]

Wow, Varshana! That's a pretty good collection of possibilities! I like the sound of 'Veruliya'. Could maybe shorten it to Veri, which is not far off of Keri...? I have been Echinacea in most of my MMO gaming life, and it is one of my favorite flowers, so even though it is not really a sea plant, I will be Mermaid Echinacea or Echi!

I like the full names personally. The shortened ones don't sound as good to me.

I also really like Veruliya!! I've been looking up alternate spelling and a few other names to compare. But so far it's my favorite :) I didn't even think about shortening it, I love how it connects to my name a bit closer.
I think I've wanted to be a mermaid since I read The Mermaid Summer by Mollie Hunter as a beach read in about 2nd or 3rd grade. I loved the mermaid in that book, but it doesn't have a name. In the book, a girl has to give the mermaid her jade hair comb or she'll drive away all the fish from the sea. I'm pretty sure it's an irish setting. I've always loved the dangerous mermaids that sing to sailors and in my opinion accidently kill them, sirens in modern day, but back in roman times, they were half bird and ugly. Kind of rids the mermaid stereotype :/

For professional or business purposes, yes, the full name is better! But if someone is trying to get my attention, 'Hey! Echi!' is easier to yell ;)

My mer story is boring. I always liked fairies, mermaids and sea life (I was born a mile from the shore). I became obsessed with mermaids at the tender young age of...heh...27....when I marathoned through H2O on Netflix.
