I thought I'd start a pod for now, and if we felt the need we could break it up into groups but there's not that many Canadians. I could break it up into pacific, atlantic, and central, but like I said, I think there's all of 3 or 4 of us?
Anyway, I'm Raina, from NS!

I'm pretty busy studying for a test this week, but after that I'm gonna try to make a coat of arms for Canada. That's great that you like the whole pod concept. I totally want people to adopt it.

hmm Im in pod of St lawrence, but Im not really near the st lawrence river at all, just the atlantic ocean. Not sure if this is just until Malighi can make us something? I think at least count there is all of 4 or 5 of us from Canada in total so I dont see the need to break the country up into divisions

Hey! I'm new here! :)
I'm currently living at the edge of Toronto, & I go up to swim in Lake Simcoe every sunday (which is about 1 & 1/2 hrs from where I live).
I've lived here all my life, but after I graduate college, I plan on moving to Vancouver by myself, It's kind of my dream.
I'm in love with the Ocean, so Toronto doesn't really give me that escape that I need, although I do love my city, it's time for me to swim away.

Indigoice, it says you're north of Toronto? I would definitely be up for a meet up swim someday!
I have a friend who also loves mermaids, though she's not a swimmer she would probably still be up for a beach day too.
I only have Oceanika Merfins right now, but someday soon I'd like to work on turning it into a tail.
And Raina, I'll try not to be awkward, but you're one of the mers who influenced me into doing this! So thanks!
But I agree, we need MORE canadians!

so sad to hear about Jack Layton today :( RIP
Jack Layton was the MP for my riding here in Toronto. I met him, and he was one of the nicest people you could ever meet, and one of the few politicins who you could actually believe when he said something he would do it. His wife, Olivia, was great too. Even though he was leader of the NDP party, he always took time to deal with issues in the riding, like intervening when federal issues were interfereing with construciton of a playground. According to local people I talked to he had been the riding's provincial MPP before he ran for MP, and had been a city councilor before that. He always lived in the riding, and never considered, or needed, to do that thing so many party leaders do where they kick out a local MP and parachute in to some riding they don't live in that is guaranteed "safe" for the party.

@ Mermaid Sabie. That's even closer than I thought. I feel though there aren't many pools in the city that would allow us mers to use our tails to swim in. I know that my tail that Jesse at Mermaid Creations has made should be shipped tomorrow and the first swim will be in a hotel pool hopefully soon. Do you have a tail and if so have you swam in it in any pools?

Welcome here fellow Canadian. I also ordered and received a tail from Jesse at Mermaid Creations. Just waiting for a chance to go to a hotel to try my tail out for the first time. I bought the same type of monofin that was in my tail (one size too small at the time) to practice with while waiting. Its very interesting swimming in one. One thing I did notice when I would get the dolphin kick right, I would go through the water way smoother. I know I won't be anywhere as smooth as Raina swimming but will enjoy the feeling of being a merman.
Cheers

CANADIAN MERMAIDS!!!
Halifax Mermaids is currently expanding into Atlantic Mermaids and are looking to connect with mermaids in the Atlantic/Maritime provinces. IN addition, we are expecting and filing paperwork to expand to Canada wide as Canadian Mermaids. We are aiming to be a booking agent for all you mermaids! To help other Canadian Mermaids get established in the field, get materials, get clients, advertise and hopefully through us be recognized better! We are working on our system of how we'd charge people for our services, it would likely be like any other agency in that we'd either charge per booking (ONLY bookings that we get you, take a small percent), or have the option of yearly membership fees. Each package would come with different perks, resources, and plans. We currently do this with the other mermaids in Halifax and it works quite well. (e.g. I collect a small fee from every booking they do with me, or through me, and in exchange I insure them all, market them all, book them all their own gigs etc they are still free to be independent and book gigs on their own)
Right now, since we're trying to get this going, we need to prove to investors it could work ;) So I'd like to know if any of you Canadians would be interested in something like this in the future. It's not a commitment on your behalf at all. We realize you'd want to see the whole thing set up and know exactly what you'd be getting into. But for now, we just wanna know if there are enough mermaids out there to actually support something like that, or if we were able to help get things like tails, would people take the leap?
Email me! raina@rainamermaid.com subject line canadian mermaid

Hello! I'm brand-new to everything, and eagerly anticipating the delivery of my first monofin (A junior-size one from a fairly unknown Ontario company called fun-fin...which I mixed up with fin-fun on ebay and ordered accidentally...I'll let you folks now how that turns out :/ ) --I'll confess, I wound up here doing research for a project, and thought I'd immerse myself a bit more (ha!). I live in Toronto, right on the lake, but I regularly swim at the community centre after work. Does anyone know if there are any flipper-friendly pools in TO where I might practice with my monofin?
SeaGlass Siren
08-01-2014, 12:17 PM
there's actually al paladini community centre up in vaughan (close to canada's wonderland, just above toronto) that lets you use monofins. they let me train with those a summer ago.

Hey Toronto Mers! I just got an email response to my Toronto 311 enquiry regarding monofins stating:
"It appears that all of the Etobicoke York Pools allows the use of fins and snorkels during there lane swims as long as it is not too busy. Once it get busy, we would ask you to refrain from this activity."
So, there's somewhere to practice with monofins (though actual tails would probably be pushing it). I am waiting on confirmation from the downtown area, and I'll report my findings!
AniaR
08-21-2014, 10:28 AM
we are really hoping as Canadian Mermaids gains momentum that we can advocate to pools across Canada for the use of tails :D we're going to have a section on our site for pools to read so people can send them to it and see it's all legit ;)
SeaChange
08-22-2014, 04:56 PM
Just got off the phone with one of the Aquatics supervisors for downtown Toronto! The use of flippers and monofins is allowable in all Toronto public pools, as long as the pool is not especially crowded, though veto is in the hands of pool staff at any time. I went for a couple of hours last night and now I've got chaffed ankles, haha.
(Again, I was asking after flippers and monofins, not full mermaid tails, but somewhere to practice is still useful!)

Yay for canadian mers!
Im in alberta, and here in red deer the pools allow full tails during lane swims and slow days. The pool i prefer to use have a 15 foot diving tank that is tiled so nice for tails. Its also rentable, and I would definitly rent it if I could get enough mers together!

Lostariel Telrunya!!! I've swam at the Shawnessy YMCA with my modified monofin a couple times and also Auburn Bay lake! I know some 8 year old girls who have swam around in the kiddie pool at the Y but not sure how they would react to us lol. I still don't have an actual tail yet but even a monofin feels amazing! Do you have a tail?

Mermaid Sabie let me chirp in on the costs of swimming in Red Deer as I have gone up there a few times to swim and plan on going back one of these weeks when I have time and life doesnt get in the way. For the lane swimming and slow times, its $5 to swim for the couple hours they have this swimming. Its been a real blessing have access to the dive tank to swim in and the lifeguards know us so they don't really worry about us swimming. Also I should add I believe this swimming time is only available on weekdays but I could be wrong.
Mermaid Jamie I hope you didnt mind me stepping in and answering her question.

No worries matt. Its good you did since ive been up and down and all over the place.
yes lane swimming is 5$ per person, available from 11 to 1 mon to fri. They also have night one from 9 to 10 pm mon to thurs and public lane swim from 1-3 on saturdays. Thats quite a bit busier then usual lane swim and may or may not be enough room for all of us and tails. They have the dive boards open on saturday.
the pool is available for rent on the weekends. I think the dive tank is 50 or 60 an hour and the regular pool is 75 per hour.
Dive tank is better for us. The regular pool is older and not overly deep. Better for straight swimming, the tank is better for tricks.
dive tank is 15 feet deep and not overly chlorinated!!!!!!! Its at the Michener Center.
i do need to add that there are windows on two side of the dive tank about a foot under the surface. During holidays they like to decorate them. I did not know this when i went in december and when i got close to it i discovered there was a decapitated snowman head in it. Scared the hell outta me. I also discovered you cannot scream underwater................

So my mer-sister River Moonsong and I made our first fabric tails last week and finally got to go for a swim in them last night. We were so excited and still have smiles on our faces today. It was an amazing experience that has made us look forward to the next fabric tail we planned to make for our selves. we took some pictures and some videos. It was nice to have such friendly lifeguards and even friendlier strangers come and ask us about our tails. First full mermaid swim is a memory I plan to keep making.

Exciting news! A friend of mine owns a costume making company in Toronto. They're looking at mass-producing scale print fabric tails here in Canada! No more customs and exchange rates! AND I get to be the one that test drives the prototypes! :yay:

Kelly Francis costumes Inc. They've done costumes for Cirque du Soleil as well as various movies and TV shows, and even individual cosplays.
There's nothing solid on this yet, he's still sourcing materials. If it ends up being as expensive to make the tails here as it is to ship one up from the states, there's no point.

So in dealing with the insane photo theft of the montreal mermaid swim school, I have come across some more Canadian Mermaid companies that I didnt know existed!
http://mermaidsinternational.com
^based in vancouver
http://www.internationalmermaidacademy.com/About-Us.php
^based in ontario
our company has been around longer but I am still surprised I'd never heard of them before. I have been touching base with the first link, as there were issues with the montreal swim school stealing photos. And the owner seems really nice :)
The second link I am wondering if anyone knows them? I just sent their own a friend request on FB to see if I could get to know them :)
in an update on the montreal swim school THEY KEEP STEALING PHOTOS and everyone they have stolen from has been going after them. 3 fins, mermaid LInden, mertailor, Philippians mermaid school... I did an interview with the globe and mail and they asked me a lot about it so I am hoping it comes to light as they are getting insane media coverage with stolen photos :(

I myself who works outside as part of my career I dont know how we would handle that weather. Thats just crazy. Also let Sean if he needs to do any shovelling not to overwhelm himself. Snow can be very heavy especially with what I say. All the best from out west in Alberta.

Hi - Toronto mer here.
Been a performer since I was 4 years old, and grew up in Orlando swimming all year and fantasizing about working at Weeki Wachee. Finally am doing something to use my skills to live a dream! I have my tail on order, which a good friend who is a seamster is going to help me pimp out a bit so it won't just look like every fabric tail (while I wait to be ready to invest in a silicone), and have some custom tops and hair pieces coming my way too. I'm going to be getting my SCUBA certification soon, too, and I want to get into the free diving locally - but when I contacted them they said they didn't have pool access until next year due to the PanAm games. So I guess that will have to wait until 2016. :) But I'm doing it!

Thanks for the good wishes, OceanRose!
So far people appear to be making it out OK. I've only read about 2 deaths from the fire so far, as well as the usual injuries from smoke. No-one I know from the area has been hurt so far. It's also bringing out the kindness of people. I found this article inspiring.

Of course, you New Zealanders need good wishes when you get one of your earthquakes. One of my good friends in Christchurch went through the last one pretty well. Not too much repair expenses, and he's not a Marmite-eater, so was unaffected by Marmageddon (now me, on the other hand ... I was feeling that loss of Kiwi Marmite :) )

Hello!
From Winnipeg, Manitoba myself! I saw there is another person here from Winnipeg! Yay for Land-Locked mermaids. :) Currently I have a gym/ pool membership at the Active living Centre at the U of M campus. Not sure what their policies are on monofins and tails yet (but Iwill ask if necessary), HOWEVER, there has been some numerous reports of repeated thefts recently (As of May 25, 2016) so be aware and bring your own lock if you use their services, and don't leave things like a phone or laptop in your locker.
I've not inquired at Pan Am Pool, Sergeant, Boni-Vital or any of the YMCA's in the city. If the other person is still around, let me know please? It might save me some hassle in the long run.
Also, is there a place in the city that sells mono fins in the city? Thanks!
