If you search 'blackfish' you'll find a few threads on it, in the Marine Bio and Oceanography subforum.

I watched the trailer. It's very eye opening. I would see it if I had time to.

It's coming to Louisiana on the 16th of August, so I'm planning to go see it then with my boyfriend.

Nope and I don't plan to either.

i feel there is too much being pushed way too much especially on the topic of animals in captivity (I know nothing is all rainbows and ponies in any zoo/aquarium etc. there are always good and bad things). On a personal level, I respect what all parks do to help care for these animals. All animals have instincts, all animals have a certain type of intelligence and all animals whether pet or not can bite, hurt, kill anyone and anything, they all get sick and need proper care, not all animals understand that things we do for them (blood samples, stomach samples, and such)is to monitor health. I love orcas and like a few mers on here, yes I do consistently go to SeaWorld yearly, I have done many whale watches, and yet i don't feel different seeing them in a captive environment, than in the wild. I just feel that this movie will end up doing much more harm than good, by highlighting all that happened in the parks and not also adding what has been learned from this park, how advanced cetacean care has come from what we learned for caring for these animals and use it to help those in need.

a fellow mer who said "Considering Tilikum has no fear of humans, what's not to say he won’t harm anyone"- the question is raised for all whales who have "attacked" trainers and people who are demanding releasing the animals don't think ahead of possible complications (the 'what ifs'). What happens if said whale escapes the sea-pen or goes on a "walk" and swims off (like keiko did) , an animal who has no fear of humans, and see a random swimmer/diver etc, then what happens if said human is hurt/killed. Who's to blame?? The human who was diving unaware of the animals sudden presence?? or those who decided to put this animal in a sea-pen.

In Short Releasing animals/putting them in sea-pens won’t help the situation. A sea pen is just another enclosed area, Then again if i remember correctly Iceland gave a very hard time in order to grant Keiko be moved. So you think after all these years they are going to allow it again?. But then again even with the release of 'BlackFish,' SeaWorld has had record audiences in park. So im not worried about the future of the park.

Thats hard to understand. Anyone with any shred of respect for these animals would appreciate the significantly reduced conditions orcas live in while at Seaworld. All of the "advanced medical care" and "enrichment" they are given cannot replace the freedom they have in their natural world. Seaworld does a magnificent job of lulling its guests into thinking these whales are fine and dandy, and that they love performing....strip away the music, the flashy stage, the colourful wetsuits and you don't have much left but a tank with a few whales swimming around in them. Its completely profit based, these animals are used for entertainment, which is NOT what they are for.

The film does not encourage ~*~RELEASING ALL THE WHALES~*~ into the ocean. Of course, that is folly.

I've spent thousands of hours watching these animals both in the wild, and in captivity. I have worked as a marine mammal trainer in the past and have spent many hours watching Corky and crew swim laps around the 'shamu closeup' pool at SWC. I can say with all of that with my years of observation and experience, orcas in captivity is not right. We need to make this apart of our past, not part of our future.
I think it would be so cool of Seaworld to be a leader and for them to no longer run the goofy shows they currently run and replace their orca exhibit with something lower key and more educational. Stop breeding them and let the era of orcas as entertainers end. The orcas in captivity have put in the time, they have showed us how phenomenal these creatures are ... as have they showed us how ill suited they are to life in a tank. We have scarified the lives of many orcas in the name of entertainment ... that should not sit well with anyone who claims to love these creatures.
