Sea food is one of my favorite foods! And I like those dried sea weed sheets too, especially when they're salted. Have you ever had sea weed salad? I want to try it but I don't know if it's good or not.

I LOVE SEAWEED SALAD! I have a few recipes bookmarked in my mer-folder if anyone would like. Wal-mart has had these Korean seaweed snacks for fairly cheap, but there's a lot of packaging, and it's just Nori sliced into snack-sized rectangles and with a bit of sesame oil on them and stuck in the oven for a few minutes, sooo I'll probably just be getting some nori and making my own.

I live in OR, and in a town far away from an Asian market, so I haven't had the chance to get much seaweed at all since I moved here, which is very sad as I'm used to having a variety of seaweed a lot!

I love seaweed! One of my favorite morning/hangover foods is wakame chazuke, which is a bowl of white rice with wakame, a dense, stringy variety of seaweed, and other seasonings with hot green tea poured over the top. It sounds weird but if you like seaweed, you'll probably looooove this dish and you should give it a shot!

I also like to prepare my rice with a strip of konbu, a flat, sheet-like seaweed, in the rice cooker to add a really nice umami flavor.

Seaweed is the best!

Sorry I refer sushi and sashimi, I like it enough when it's wrapped around stuff, but otherwise I have trouble biting into it and tearing it off things without making a mess.

Sea weed, if you can get the good stuff that isn't soaking up mercury, is really good for you. High in iron. I wish I liked it, but I just can't... to me it reeks of dead fish, which is because when it's harvested it often is pressed with tiny fish and snails in it. It's just a fact of life.

However, for those of you who eat it, someone try Irish seaweed soup, as made by the people of Irish coasts. I always wanted to make some... but can't abide the taste and smell of the main ingredient!

I love seaweed, but there are few shops which sell it, and even fewer who can serve it as it should be served outside of Asia.
I'd never touch other marine life, though.
Seems like a horrible waste to kill something that has so little meat like clams, shrimps, lobsters, you name it...

Kumori Kitsune

if you have kroger where you live they sell it some times there

I love seaweed in all forms xD Dried, in soups, in salads... Never knew that they pressed fish and snails into it though, but I don't mind because I've tried snails too, and they tasted great.

Curious to try that Irish seaweed soup though, that's something I've never had before.

Can you believe lobster was once considered to be such a "trash food" that they fed it to prisoners?

Calamari and Uni (urchin), anyone?

Caspiana: Eel is uh-mazing. I get unagi (freshwater eel) any time I go somewhere that serves it :) I keep getting everyone else addicted too, LOL! It just melts in your mouth, om nom nom!

Um, ok, so my weirdo mer-food is... Concentrace Mineral Drops (http://www.traceminerals.com/products/liquid-tablet-minerals/concentrace-ionic-minerals). I guess it's made from the Great Salt Lakes or something, but it makes my water taste like the ocean LOL :P Weird product, but since I left it in CO when I moved to OR, I actually really miss it :( I'd also love to try these phytoplankton drops (http://www.vitacost.com/umac-core-marine-phytoplankton-drops?csrc=GPF-PA-886255001067&ci_gpa=pla&ci_kw=&ci_src=17588969&ci_sku=886255001067&ci_src=17588969&ci_sku=886255001067&gclid=CJeh7t-LmbkCFS6CQgodvHoAVw#productDetails), because I'm weird like that. Cellfood (http://www.newlifevitamins.com/cellfood-original) is my favorite supplement drop I've had, though.

... and all of these pretty much turn your water into not-salty (but still salty-tasting) sea water, haha! I'm weird.

Merman Dan

waitaminute... phytoplankton for human (okay, okay...mer) consumption?!? Cool!

As a marine aquarist, I have seen my share of phytoplankton as food for fish and inverts. I've even considered getting a phytoplankton reactor (http://www.charterhouse-aquatics.co.uk/grotech-phytobreeder-200-11v-plankton-reactor-p-2514.html).

I'm totally a sea-critter kind of girl. Not much fond of the idea of sea-weed, though there's a few Persian dishes I think would be cute (in theory at least... They'd probably taste awful in practice) if they were "mermaided up" with seaweed added with the other herbs.

But meh, I'm not going to try it any time soon. I'm much more a crawdad, salmon, white fish, crab, shrimp, abalone, oyster, octopus, clam, squid, scallop, etc. kind of girl.

Oh, and, here goes, but I hate lobster and sushi/sashimi.

Yeah, I had to give up my conch fritter craving and am now considering abalone fritters made from farm-raised abalone. A bit more expensive, but as a citizen of the ocean, it is well worth it.

Umf, I LOVE seafood. When people ask me "you're a mermaid, how can you still eat seafood?!" etc, I just tell them that mermaids are omnivorous- and like humans, different mermaids have different dietary preferences. Some might be vegetarian-- others, like me, are fine with eating fish. Not much different from fish eating other fish.

My boyfriend just opened a seafood restaurant, so I've been eating a lot of prawns and giant garoupa! It makes me feel sad to see the fish swimming around in the tanks, though. Once they had the wide ocean to explore, and now they're just kind of swimming around a 6ft tank...

Hm... Other than seaweed, I also like a lot of seafood. Fish is just so good. I think I like my fish raw/mostly unflavored though, not quite sure while. Whenever eating sashimi I almost never use soy sauce or wasabi. Oysters also taste good raw (my opinion, but it's kind of an acquired taste since the texture is really weird). I've tried a lot of fish/seafood before, and I love eel. Haven't had some in a while though. Maybe I'll treat myself to some on my birthday c:

Hm.. for some reason I'm not a huge fan of crab, flounder, mackerel, cod, sardines, or tuna.

You could also tell them "Haven't you heard of a dolphin? Or a whale? Or a seal? Or a shark?" (although I'm pretty mean sometimes, and I'm sure that would come out of my mouth sounding catty) I never understood though how people who ask that question don't think about the fact that a LOAD of sea creatures (mammalian or otherwise) eat other sea creatures... Besides, if you live in the sea, what else do you eat besides for "sea food" ;)

Aw, Hehehe :) Thanks

And yeah... I think the moment Disney suddenly gave the fish personalities was when everyone's confusion set it. I know I was afraid of eating Sebastian for a while and refused crab (my favorite food) because my mom couldn't prove that it wasn't Sebastian.... But then again, I was REALLY little at the time, so.... Not sure of the excuse other adults have!

Incidentally, while I was afraid of eating Sebastian, I wasn't afraid of eating Flounder. Not sure why? Maybe because flounder is a type of fish I could actually avoid because it said "flounder" on the package..

I blame you guys- and this thread- for making me have an insane craving for japanese seafood last night! Taha! I had salmon sashimi, swordfish sashimi, sushi, and unagi. (all the mention of unagi got me hungry for it)

Tonight, I'll be going over to my boyfriend's restaurant to have black pepper crab (I love crab meat but I'm usually too lazy to crack the shell, etc...), fresh giant garoupa, and prawns. Wish I could share some around! Well. If ever any of you come to Singapore- hit me up!

I know what you mean! I was dying for seafood. I just got back from Joe's Crabshack (although honestly that had more to do with my friends having impeccable timing than me actually taking the initiative to feed myself).

Does anyone else have trouble with those cracking things they give you for the crab? I can't use them for the life of me unless it's a particularly thick crab leg (like the claw). I usually just end up breaking the stupid things with my bare hands out of frustration. :(

Mermaid Syrena
08-27-2013, 02:58 AM
I don't know what Joe's Crabshack is (we don't have it here)- but it sounds like you had a good meal! Are you as big on protein as I am, Anahita? I find that I CAN'T survive on just vegetables and carbs. It's just a personal preference, of course, but I get cranky if I don't get protein, lol.

And. Totally get what you mean about crabs being a bitch to crack. You know the saying "she's a hard nut to crack?". Mer version = "she's a hard crab to crack". It all makes sense. The claw part is the only part I- like you- can eat, because it's the cheat bit and the meat just slips out. Mm.

YES! Ugh I hate those. I don't even bother with them anymore. I just end up breaking them with my hands and/or teeth. That ends up with people starring at me but oh well. There is no graceful way to eat crab. XD

Oh, duh **facepalm** sorry, I should have clarified - Joe's Crabshack is a Californian seafood restaurant that specializes in shellfish, but ESPECIALLY tasty tasty crab.

I'm actually not THAT big on animal protein compared to other Persians... and I'm definitely not big on animal protein when compared to Americans. I think when seafood is taken out of the picture, I eat animal protein maybe four times a week. With seafood added in, I eat it maybe eight to ten times a week.

I'm not sure if it's because of my religious background that I don't eat a lot of meat, or what (We don't ban eating meat, but we are encouraged to be very conscientious about choosing animal proteins). When I do eat non-seafood meat, it's usually sheep, chicken, turkey, deer, goat, pigeon, duck, and pheasant. I can't stand pig or cattle, they both make me sick because I didn't grow up eating them... That weird little tick makes most Americans and Persians mistake me for vegetarian. But I'm actually far from it. :)

The one thing that DOES make me grumpy is no protein whatsoever. But there's a few weird little things, I don't know what they're called in English, but we use them all the time in Persian cooking, and Indian cooking too for that matter - nakhodchi, adas, loobia ghermez - that are packed with protein (and in some cases iron too, which is good for my anemia), so when I'm grumpy, they're the first thing out of the freezer and into the microwave so I don't bite someone :D

The bane of my existence!

Yeah, you're definitely right, there's just no graceful way to eat crab... Surprisingly, my hands have gotten really good and breaking them open... Kind of proud of myself on that one, especially since I can pull the meat out after breaking them in one big delicious and impressive chunk. :D

Dacora
08-27-2013, 09:23 AM
Yea I have gotten good at using my teeth and hands too. It takes me longer if I use the cracker.

The big chunks are the best part. So easy, no pieces of meat missed and wasted. Just one juicy piece of yummy goodness. Ugh, I want crab now....

Be careful about consuming TOO much seafood, folks! Mercury is present in all seafood and can accumulate to dangerous levels in the body! You should only eat an average of 2 seafood meals per week, and far fewer if you eat shellfish or any of the other fish indicated to have especially high levels of mercury, including swordfish.
http://water.epa.gov/scitech/swguidance/fishshellfish/outreach/advice_index.cfm

Also, a word of warning to anyone who frequently eats tuna served at restaurants and sushi bars: it is likely to NOT be tuna!

If anyone likes fish, there's this Hawian (however you spell it) fish seasoning that is to die for! my friend brought some back and you can put it over any type of fish and just bake it.

Miyu
08-29-2013, 07:18 PM
That is a good point, Myu! Also, seafood that is smaller and lower on the food chain (thus having shorter life spans and not consuming a lot of other mercury-filled animals) contain lower levels of mercury. This includes things like brine shrimp/krill (which I guess isn't eaten as much in the Western world, haha). There are lists of seafood which contains much safer amounts of mercury, but the general rule is that the bigger it is, the more mercury it has.

I wonder what the mercury levels of seaweed harvested from the ocean are? I know things like spirulina are grown in a factory-like "greenhouse", so the levels of everything are constantly monitored.

Ummm... Just because I'm weird, and the thought of watching mercury levels brings it up... Also keep in mind that factory-farmed meat (aka not grass-fed/pastured) meat, dairy, and eggs all contain huge amounts of antibiotics, among other things... sorry... I know it's not mer and I'm not trying to tell you how to eat, I'm just saying you really gotta know where your food is coming from or watch how much you eat... Because I love all you mers and they do scary things to food that do funny things to our bodies... :sad eyes:

Merman Dan

granted, brine shrimp has no nutritional value, which is why it is often "fortified" with nutrients before it is fed to aquarium fish. feeding a seahorse a diet of brine shrimp would be like a human living on a diet of twinkies... not that there's anything wrong with that. ;)

Bahahaaa I don't see anything the matter there. Eat enough and you'd probably be able to survive a nuclear mishap.

Since mercury was brought up, what's the level of mercury in the typical farm-raised fish? Those are usually the ones I eat on a regular basis (since wild caught fish can have a lot of collateral damage because of the nets and it's not always easy to verify from the grocer HOW the fish was caught).
