Foot Cramp Prevention

I know people eat bananas or take supplements to prevent foot cramps while swimming but has anyone tried chia products?

As in Chia seeds? I've gotten some from one of the organic markets near me and it was pretty expensive.

I haven't used chia... usually I just try and stretch my feet out, before and after swimming.

I love chia! But I thought because they have a ton of potassium having them before mermaiding would probably be a good idea. :)

If you're keen on potassium, I'd say eat sweet potatoes, oranges, dates, yogurt, raisins, and I think even clams have a lot of potassium in them (more than a banana at least... Bananas are actually really bad for getting potassium since they're lower in it than oranges, and have a shorter shelf-life as far as fruit goes)

Coconut water has loads of potassium. I also hear magnesium helps, and there are these cramp relieving pills my super-kick-butt-swimmer friend uses...

Glad to know its not just me with the freakazoid foot cramps :P

I got them the one time I swam in a lake but it was only about 5 feet of water and my mertender was in the water with me

The quinine in tonic water prevents cramping, too. It took a couple of seasons of tail swimming before I built up enough strength to stop the cramping.

I find adding a little extra sea salt to food or just eat it straight (as its not as salty as normal salt) helps prevent cramps.

Banana's always work for me!

I was suggested to drink water before I swam. I didn't believe this but boy was I wrong! It's amazing how well your muscles hold up when you're fully hydrated. When I went to my first meet up, I didn't drink anything really until lunch. I'm just not a water person. And I had cramps out the wazoo that day. They hurt so bad they followed through for the next two days! I never had them that bad before. Then on my next swim I drank a lot of water and a gatorade. Not one problem!

I drink lots of water to stay hydrated and eat a few dried apricots every day. Apricots have 3 times the amount of potassium as bananas and the dried ones keep better than other sources like avocados or mushrooms.
