Idea: Virtual Mer-Meet (Secondlife)

Hello all! *wave*

It was mentioned mers from this site might also have a mer-avatar in SL.

Knowing how difficult it can be to bring even the people of one country together for a mer-meet, here's the idea!

We set a time/date (maybe through a poll, to determine which day most of us would have time),
and then meet in a nice, watery SL destination we previously select.

Come as any avatar you wish/can (there are some cheap commercial mermaid avas available),
it would of course be best if you made your avatar resemble you as much as you can, and your outfit looking like a tail you really have, to make this virtual meeting as close to a real one as possible!

Feel free to make your dream tail to go with it, or come as a fairy if you prefer, in SL, everything's possible, and you can fly :D

I've not been on SL for a very long time, but I'm willing to help out people who would like to make their real tail for their avatar and don't know exactly how.

A gathering in SL would also enable people to meet who otherwise never would because of distance.
We could try to make a world-wide meet as well!
And this is the best purpose of SL btw, a platform to meet people from around the world in real time, while looking like themselves!

If you go to the SWF headquarters, there is a "free and cheap tails list" in the toolkit on the welcome desk. There is a notecard in there that should have fairly updated landmarks to places with mer-tails :)

It's similar.
SL is a platform where you can make everything yourself (clothes, appearances, furniture, houses, fantasy stuff, vehicles, anything really) exactly the way you want it to look.
The only limit is the user's ability to use the in-world building and editing tools.

Apart from that, it's a world which is shaped by its residents.
Some come only to party or go to clubs and meet people; others buy themselves their dream villa on a tropical island they cannot afford in reality;
others roleplay, change into a different entity, or explore the ever changing regions.

I know many people never get into SL, because they somehow think it's an MMO, and since it isn't, they get bored and leave.
You won't get quests or goals to achieve besides those you set for yourself.

And there are sims- regions- for about everything.
The mermaid related ones are more and bigger than what I expected and remember.

Yep, the UI and tools definitely take some time to get used to.
Don't rush, you'll get the hang of it soon enough.

Once you're ready to head out, type "safe water foundation" in the search menu, and you should get a teleport button.
On the minimap you can see who's there and their names, so you'll spot other forummers easily.

You can go to the SWF (or other mermaid regions) and look a bit around.
Most have a box with tails and fins that are free.
The free tails in the SWF look better than expensive tails from a few years back.

I think I know how to make this tail. Just find a palm tree on sl, attach it to your foot and tint it blue. So your avatar is swimming around standing up on a palm tree or dragging a palm tree behind itself.

check out the pc requirements on their website www.secondlife.com (http://www.secondlife.com), they have all the hardware listed.

Today, I had some fun trying to re-create my SL look irl :D

I used:
a tiara/crown from my carnival/performance props;
my white snaketail, which I made look longer than it really is by wrapping a white qipao around my feet;
a white bellydancing veil, which I fastened above and behind me;
and a white bathing suit with a scale pattern.

Now, making a tail outfit like this and actually swimming in it would be fantastic (and better for photoshoots),
but I made my snaketails a bit shorter for a reason :p
I need the feeling I'm getting somewhere while swimming, or I get frustrated lol.

I had no idea that goldfishtail could be bought.
But then, probably not everyone can make such pro outfits themselves, thus I guess most of the stuff we've seen is vendored somewhere.

I finally sorted my full snake- and dragon avatars, and had another look at my old mermaid outfits.
They aren't half bad, but I still prefer stuff I made on my own and is thus unique in all of SL. :)

btw, I found some fluke texture in my inventory and couldn't apply it to a tailprim, the exact problem you had Pearl,
the flexi path was upside down.
I found absolutely no way to rotate that around, save for building an entire new fin lol.

Could you by any chance explain how you turned your texture around on the prim?

1)Put the fluke on by R clicking it in inventory and click attach to l o r foot
2)R click on the fluke and click EDIT
3)click on Texture tab
4)look down at Rotation Degrees and change the number to about 180 degrees if it is on 0
you will see the fluke turning around
5)realign the fluke back onto your feet.
6)click on the Features tab and make sure Flexible Path box is checked.
come out of it and the fluke should wave the right way.

PS To get a "mesh" texture go to the Texture tab and increase the transparency to about 40%

yes I have all my old stuff back. You can sign on 2 accounts at the same time. I looked it up online.
Go to ME in menu then PREFERENCES then ADVANCED then check box for Allow multiple viewers.
You sign on one account. Then you go to start and open another incident of second life and sign on your other avatar... Voila! :eek:

I have an SL account. I haven't been on it in quite a while. I got it back when I was 13 and met up with some other kids my age. We found this sort of family like setting and they made sure we were in appropriate areas since having an account then at that age wasn't allowed. I stopped playing because I had school to focus on, it's been a while, but seeing this thread reminded me of it :) It's much more enjoyable when you have friends on or people you know. It isn't so much fun by yourself.

I used to be a builder. Sort of. I at least knew how to build. But since I haven't been on in a while, the new UI is a bit confusing. I'll probably use Phoenix instead, it uses the old UI that SL used to have before they "upgraded".

Feels bad to not be able to give a tip at the parties too, but I -really- don't have anything left, lol.

I found a huge store where in one corner, mer animations were sold!
There were beautiful dances, even a danceball, and some mer-mer cuddle anims :)

I'd so get me some of those dances or a HUD if I could.

One word of warning:
Lately, there has sprung up a new species of griefer in SL, the so-called crashspammers.
They use a malicious script which acts similar to a trojan and will log you out/crash your pc, and they flock to populated areas, especially gatherings and parties.

If you repeatedly freeze and crash, and cannot connect to the SL website afterward while everything else on the internet works just fine, it's likely you encountered one.
I had some serious problems with that because there is a crashspammer repeatedly visiting the twomoons events where I used to hang out.

They are now lying on the ground, and each time the couple dives down (second dive), they completely submerge under the sand ground lol.

If your screen remains black after starting, it's most likely your graphics card cannot handle SL.
Check the requirements on the main website, you should find all info there.

Haha yeah, my alcohol drinking is mostly limited to a little while camping or when hanging out with pirates, LOL. But, even if I did drink, I kind of live in a place where there's not much to do except tend to your fields and make things out of all the wood that grows in abundance here :p I used to live in Denver, CO, where at least there was things to do that didn't involve drinking, and were also mostly free as well... So I'm very lonely now, and I'd like to mer-club it up haha!

I live in the middle of nowhere, too.
I usually don't mind, but having to drive an hour to get to a pool, or a doctor, or anything, is annoying...and it can get lonely, which is why I love SL parties lol.

I used to play wow a lot, and especially in the beginning, it was srs bsns :p
Also, when you are grouped with others, they kinda rely on you, so if your BF was tanking or healing a dungeon or raid, his char lagging and dying could lead to an entire 24 other people dying (called a "wipe"), and that costs them all gold for repairs, and time in RL, so don't diss them too much for getting upset xD

When you click the item and "wear" it, and it still isn't unboxed, you will hold the box in your hand/arm.
Right-Click the box again and choose "edit".
In the Edit menu that comes up, open the "Content"-Tab.
You will now see what the box contains (usually your stuff, and some notecards/scripts and such).
Choose the stuff you want to unpack, and drag n drop it to your inventory.

You can also just click the box while wearing it, and get a window asking whether to copy to inventory and/or wear it, then just choose yes and there ya go.

The day he freaked out was actually during the day while he was playing alone. He's just been grumpy because we ran out of food stamps so he's been out of soda for a week :P He drinks nothing but Cherry Coke, so he gets just a wee bit cranky without it LOL... And I understand, he's also lagged me so bad the whole internet froze while I'm trying to upload video and we had to reset the router...

Mostly they happen later evening/night, I'm afraid.
There are of course spots where parties are going on 24/7, but those are for leggers :p
(not bad either, if you're into that kind of thing.
Most have theme mottos, so I get to wear all the stuff I've made over the years :) ).

Hmm... I'll see what I can do. I mean, we *do* have two people raiding at the same time very very late at night (usually after 2:30 am), but I don't think I can slow down the internet that bad unless I'm uploading stuff...

I just heard that Stella Mare Sanctuary has shut down.
Not sure yet what this implies.
Is this the end of merdances & gatherings in Todos Santos, or will the whole sim go dry?

I am very active in SL and am a full time mer (octomer/cecaelia). I have a pod of dolphins that I pilot around the waters of SL with up to 11 passengers. We meet next to the (previously mentioned) Safe Waters Foundation Headquarters at 2pm (PST/SLT) every Sunday. It's a lot of fun.
