What paint does the mertailor/merbella/finfolk use?

Hey so I'll be getting my silicone mermaid tail from the Mertailor this week and since I wasn't happy with the design I wanted to repaint it. I know I repainted his partial silicone tail with Createx paint but I was wondering if any of you know what type of paint I should use on the Dragonskin? Raina---wasn't your tail a mertailor tail that Raven re did? What paint did she use for yours? Would it work for mine?

The only way to paint and re-paint silicone is with silicone... Because nothing else sticks to silicone but, well, silicone. So in order to paint a silicone tail, you need to use either silicone-based paint like psychopaint, or make your own silicone-based paint by adding sulfur-free pigments to platinum cure silicone... If that makes sense.

I personally like powder pigments... I've used them before with much success. People tend to like the Jacquard ones, and they're definitely some of my favorite.

I tend to avoid liquid ones like Createx, just because I make a huge mess with them. Of course, for something as large as a tail, they might be a better price (not sure, the tail I'm working on right now is the largest silicone thing I've made to date, so I'm wondering myself if the pure pigments in liquid form are better or not).

I also like going to the art supply store to pester the sale's people there, because often times the pure pigments you use to make your own paints are also the same ones you can suspend in silicone. I can't think of the names of brands I've used off the top of my head, but I know they're synthetic pigments (I avoid natural ones because I'm afraid they might be tainted with sulfur, which I'm not sure how likely that scenario is, but for some reason it's in my head)

Having personally airbrushed with silicone, yes, it is possible.

Sorry, I just realized my brain had a translation fart. Yes, I've heard of acetone being used, and I just checked the thinner I use... not water (I was thinking mineral water) it's mineral spirits. Eep... Oh my god, don't drink mineral water at my house if I offer it to you knowing I just did that! I can't believe I made that translation... **facedesk**

You can thin it down with naphtha, toluene, or xylene. Those are my favorite choices. I think mertailor uses the Silicone pigments from smooth-on and then achieves the right color with pearl ex pigments. I've seen pearl ex pigments in some of his fb pictures, and all of the tail color choices on the mertailor website are colors of the pearl ex pigments. That's why his tails always have bright metallic colors.

I use Pearlex in my resin casting, and have used it mixed right in with the tubed silicone I've used for parade tails. This info is really helpful. Thanks a lot!

Jazz, you mentioned airbrushing with the silicone. How many coats did you need to get good depth of color?

I was trying the airbrush today and got it thin enough to spray, but even with what looked looked like a dark pigment in the cup, the spray came out VERY light. At this point I think I may stick with a brush. :confused:

@Paisley777 For airbrush it could take up to five layers to really achieve the right color. That's why I prefer coating it with a spray gun to give the overall color and then spray details with the airbrush. You will need to pigment it darker then it actually will be.

I'm thinking about getting an airbrush... I was reading through a tutorial and they said you could get an airbrush on Amazon for like $10 and a compressor.... I don't really know anything about it, does everybody get a compressor? would any random one off amazon work?

You will have to thin out the silicone but the big container on the top of the gun can hold more material to work with when it comes to painting a tail :)

Just about any air compressor will do, if you just want one for airbrushing I would recommend a smallish size one. They sell them with airbrush kits online. Normally on the box or in the description of the airbrush it will say the min psi you need.

I tried using one from.two different friends and the connectors where the wrong size. If you want to just buy one, look for one that has a regulator on the back to avoid water buildup in the compressor. It looks like a small dye bottle.

You can get different sized connectors for your airbrush hose at Lowe's or likely another hardware store so you can connect to any compressor in spite of the connector size.
