I guess this is the best place for this, even though it's not strictly marine-related. I hadn't even known this kind of thing exists, and now there's a chance to contribute to a project to combat it.

It's called "Canned Hunting" in English (sometimes called Chasse Close our Chasse en Enclos in French) kind of similar to the issue of large marine animals being cooped up in restrictive tanks for people's amusement. In this case, though, people's amusement consists of hunting the animal down, and it gets a death sentence at the end!

A Francophone documentary maker from Quebec in Canada has decided to make a film about rescuing one of the lion cubs being raised for canned hunting and returning it to the wild. She has made a promo video for her project

and you can read about the project here http://www.haricot.ca/project/sauver-serabie#.UheL_aybUf0

Haricot.ca is a Francophone crowdfunding site, kind of like KickStarter or Indiegogo, but in French. I apologize that it's in French, but I will translate the most useful info on the page French in Blue, English in Black, if anyone feels they would like to contribute, but needs a little help with the language:

Top Line: Connexion = Login , Inscription = Register (if you want to become a site member)
2nd Line: Envoyer un Message = Send an Email (Alexandra speaks English, and will respond if you email her in English)
Status box: Objectif: $8,500.00 = Goal: $8,500.00
Alliés = Supporters
jours restants = days remaining

Next Box: Vous aimez ce projet? = Do you like this project?
Contibuez maintenant ou abonnez-vous à ses activités! = Contribute now or keep abreast of developments!
suivre = follow ($ = the contribution button)

I think she's got a good chance of making it over the top. As of this posting there are 8 days to go, and she has to raise $1,850 more.

Also, Bianca Beauchamp, who is possibly Quebec's most famous model, is offering an incentive draw for the project that might appeal to some of the mermen out there:

Beauchamp also did a video about the promotion in French, if our Francophone members would find it helpful

and to finish off, I just had to include a link to this video of total lion club cuteness by Alexandra

Hope this post doesn't sound too promotional, but I think people would want to know about this strange canned hunting practice and maybe help publicize the issue.
