Myu's First Fabric Tail

Hi folks! I'm endeavoring to make my first fabric tail! I'm sort of an "inspiration from nature" kind of gal so it's going to be primarily green with a generous dose of gold. However, I'm going to start with metallic gold "jumbo" spandex and use the scale-painting method whereby you put a fishnet stocking over your tail and air-brush on your colors, so that instead of having a dark green scale outline, the scales will be lined in bright gold! I'll be using Jacquard Lumiere paints and my Mahina Merfin as the monofin.

This is the belly-side of the design:

I used the Merbella template NOT because I'm going to commission her (wish I could... maybe in a few years, lol) but because it had the most accurate reflection of my fin shape!

As you can see it's kind of an ambitious design. There are alternating gold and green stripes going up the sides at an angle, with a pale belly. The back/dorsal area will be a darker green (which I haven't created a graphic for). The sides may or may not have large, round, almost-black spots on them. (Depends on how I'm feeling when I finish painting the stripes.)

It's a gorgeous design! I love the MerFin I have so much and it seems to suit your design as well. Can't wait to see it done, don't forget the stuff the tail before painting though :P

Aww, what a cute little tilapia! I think your idea for the gold-outlined scales will look AWESUM. :) I think spots could look so cool, especially like bigger ones (like that little dude's) up by your hip and then smaller going down to the fluke, just my thoughts LOL :D

I can't wait to see, I think fabric tails lend themselves so well to all sorts of creativity! I love all the painting effects I've been seeing, maybe eventually I will paint my own (but first, I will practice in artwork, heh heh... ^^;)

Thanks guys! I'm definitely going to experiment with your idea of tapering the size of the spots, Miyu. :3

I just ordered a bunch of samples of material! I'm going to see which ones feel like they'll be the best weight, airbrush them with my paint, and see how they hold up in a bromine pool (where I'll do most of my swimming), and then once I have a winner I'll order more yardage. I can't wait, I'm so excited!

I got the fabric samples I ordered a few days ago! I ordered 7 samples but these are the two top contenders. I'm not sure whether painting gold over green will look better, or green over gold, so I'm going to try it both ways and see which is better. Just waiting on my paints right now, but they should be here by Wednesday!
