Camp Myth: Kraken Fishing Kickstarter in final days

Hey guys, the second Camp Myth book is being kickstartered, and it only has five days to go.

The series follows campers who come from various families of mythical creatures, thrown together at a rather dangerous camp, where they have to work together in interspecies groups to collect merit badges. Wild mythical creatures of various sorts, out of control pets, and camp competitions and rivalries make it especially likely that campers could get burned, electrocuted, poisoned, petrified, drowned, crushed, eaten, etc.

The main characters in the story are a fae (long-eared elf with brightly-colored spots, and a talent for magic) boy who is fascinated by humans, a bespectacled cyclops nerd with a family that doesn't understand him, and a feisty runaway kitsune (fox-shifter) girl. Other major mythical creatures in the camp include minotaurs, centaurs, redcaps, kappas, harpies, leprechauns, dryads, rocs, sirens, sphinxes, and phoenixes.

The books also have their own easy-to-play roleplaying game, designed to appeal to children, story-heavy gamers, and actor-types, including the opportunity to write letters home to your character's parents as if you were the character, earn merit badges that grant magical benefits, mythical pets (including golems, hydras, gargoyles, and the like), and several different scenarios including a ghost story involving banshees, a talent show gone horribly wrong, and an adventure based on the first book, where the characters seek out proof that they used their bird watching skills to locate a phoenix (only to find that the phoenix's inferno feathers haven't been clipped as expected, and it is angry). Thus far, the game only allows one to play as athletic centaurs, strategic minotaurs, kappas (conflicted by their ties between the land and the water), tail-envious kitsune, combative cyclopes, magical fae, mischievous (and dangerous) redcaps, playful (if possessive) leprechauns, ambitious harpies and eco-loving dryads, making kappas (who are amphibious, carry water in their heads, and are prone to rages if it spills out) the only playable marine race, but the author has hinted that more are on their way (and at least three additional races are stretch goals in the current kickstarter, though none of them are aquatic so far).

The current kickstarter is for the second book in the series, Kraken Fishing, featuring a look at the Leviathan Lake, home to the campers who need to dwell in the water... including nymphs, selkies, merrow (merfolk), sirens, kappa, naiads, kelpies, and, or course, the kraken. There's also supposed to be some theme linking the marine campers to people with disabilities, who might seem uncomfortable or limited in some ways, but are graceful and powerful in the proper environment.

Some of the stretch goals include playable gorgons, pixies, and yetis for the rpg, plus actual physical merit badge pins, stickers, short stories, and more.

Finally, you can have the artists showcase your character, with full illustrations of a mythical camper of your design, facial portraits listing that camper's camp activities (golem building, siren choir, etc), and even two remaining spots as characters in a short story, to be included with the book (or ebook).

The project will be funded by 12:30 PM, Saturday August 31st, EDT. It has already reached its main goal, so the Kraken Fishing book is definitely coming out, and a postcard from camp featuring Argee the nerdy cyclops with a little kraken sucking on his head is the first stretch goal that has been unlocked for $20+ backers.

Also noteworthy: in the roleplaying game, and it seems, the books, there are no gender restrictions on characters, so there can be male harpies and dryads, female minotaurs and leprechauns, etc.

Mythical Race Descriptions from the Kickstarter (available as backer characters and portraits... so yes, you can design a Siren, Kappa, Pixie, Harpy, Dryad, Centaur, etc of your own)

(Note: These descriptions only serve as general guidelines. Backers are encouraged to design campers however they like!)


*Centaur
Incredibly fast and highly competitive, these half-human, half-horse creatures are the resident "jocks" of Camp Myth. Their athletic nature tends to make them popular with creatures of the opposite sex, and they are able to make new friends without much effort. Centaurs are unique in their firm belief that all matters - from political to personal - can be settled with some form of competition, and consider cheating to be a disgrace to their culture.


*Cyclops
One-eyed brutes who live for the thrill of combat, Cyclopes are aggressive, arrogant, and value strength above all else. Most consider themselves superior to other mythic races, and will only associate with those who they believe have proven worthy of their respect. However, despite their violent tendencies, most Cyclopes are natural artisans, capable of building objects from the strangest materials. Unfortunately for others, this usually just results in the creation of bigger, deadlier weapons.


*Dryad
Existing as physical embodiments of nature, Dryads draw their power from the Earth itself. Harnessing this energy allows them to perform all types of amazing feats, from reviving a withered tree, to launching vines at an unsuspecting attacker.
In addition, Dryads possess the ability to commune with animals, and consider themselves to be the defenders of all forest-dwelling creatures. Although Dryads can sometimes be shy, most are good-natured and idealistic beings who just want to make the world a better place.


*Fae
Considered to be masters of the arcane, Fae typically choose to distance themselves from races of “lower intelligence” in order to dedicate their lives to studying magic in all of its forms. Because of their eternal pursuit of knowledge, the average Fae is awkward in social situations, and despises anything that might be considered "fun." Although Fae revere the most talented members of their community, those who decide to shun the mystic arts in favor of other pursuits are considered outcasts, and avoided like a non-magical plague.


*Harpy
Obsessed with climbing the social ladder, Harpies are materialistic, self-centered, and unbelievably vain. They typically surround themselves with others who they believe can provide them with something, and are quick to cut ties with so-called friends that have lost their value. Above all else, though, Harpies are shameless gossips, and can't ever resist a juicy rumor about a fellow camper – especially a mean-spirited one! Not only do they take joy in spreading rumors, but they also can't help themselves from making up a few of their own whenever they get bored.


*Kappa
Because of their unique ability to survive on land or in water, most young Kappas struggle with finding a place to belong. Their scaly appearances make them the targets of ridicule among land-dwellers, while being able to leave the water has bred resentment toward their kind amongst the other aquatic races. Lacking any true culture, most Kappas simply want to fit in, and will do anything if they feel it will bring them popularity. All Kappa are required to carry water in the bowl-shaped indentation on top of their heads while on land to help avoid dehydration. If the bowl becomes empty for any reason, it can lead to several... unusual side-effects.


*Kitsune
Capable of shape-shifting between fox and human forms, Kitsune are as magical as they are cunning. Although a Kitsune is born with only one tail, they are able to grow up to nine throughout the course of their lifetime. This ability is unique among the mythic races, and will usually occur after an intense mental or physical experience. There is no greater honor for a Kitsune than to develop additional tails, as they symbolize strength and maturity. Because of the pressure within their culture to have as many as possible, most Kitsune are extremely sensitive about their current number, and tend to begrudge friends and siblings who have more tails than them.


*Leprechaun
From the top o' the mornin' to the rest of the day, Leprechauns are known for their small stature and infectious enthusiasm. They have fantastic luck, especially in tricky situations, and always seem to come out of conflicts with something positive.
They love to laugh, have fun, and bring smiles to the faces of those around them. In fact, the only thing Leprechauns take seriously is the safekeeping of their gold coins, which they carry with them at all times. However, if they happen to misplace even one of those coins, expect a temper tantrum of mythic proportions!


*Minotaur
Known as both fierce warriors and puzzle-obsessed logic-seekers, young Minotaurs are just as likely to duel each other for respect as they are to stare at a chess board for hours and contemplate the best possible move. Their honorable nature and willingness to view problems from all sides make Minotaurs natural leaders, however, due to the cultural tradition of taking part in any battle that could benefit from their assistance, there are rumored to be less than a few hundred Minotaurs left in existence.


*Redcap
Redcaps are deceitful tricksters of the highest order. Although small in size, they are known for their love of dangerous pranks, and seldom think of the consequences of their actions. These malicious little tricksters inhabit The Warrens, a series of tunnels running underneath the camp. A Redcap is most easily identified by its long, crimson hat, which it never removes. But why are they so attached to their headgear, and why do their hats always appear to be dripping with red liquid?


*Siren
Beautiful mermaids who are able to hypnotize members of the opposite sex with their melodic voices. Having grown up in a culture obsessed with looking as attractive as possible, Sirens often refuse to interact with those who do not constantly acknowledge how gorgeous they are, and are known to act hostile to any creatures they consider better-looking.

*Pixie
Tiny, colorful creatures who are fond of mischief and having fun. While not typically considered dangerous, a swarm of these pint-sized fliers can be a major annoyance if they're determined to cause trouble. More than anything, however, Pixies love to be as eye-catching as possible, and will often steal shiny objects to wear in order to gain attention.


*Yeti
These furry, cold-loving creatures have been known by many names (Sasquatch, the Abominable Snowman). In truth, they are simple, primitive folk who tend to only associate within their own tribes. For a Yeti, there's no greater joy than to eat, sleep, eat, eat, sleep... and toss the occasional snowball at an unsuspecting camper.


*Gorgon
While not quite as imposing as the famous "Medusa," young Gorgons are best known for having a writhing tangle of snakes instead of hair. Although legend says that a Gorgon can turn a creature to stone with a simple gaze, it actually takes a great deal of emotional stress for them to tap into this dangerous ability, so other campers know to stay on their best behaviour while they're around.

Glad you like the idea, Moonlight... I do recommend checking out the rpg and Phoenix Watching (there's also an iPhone/iPad app story, but I have neither, so I can't vouch for the quality) and I dearly wish 1000 people liked the kraken fishing kickstarter (even if each of those hypothetical 1000 people donated a dollar, that'd get the Art of Kraken Fishing PDF and the rpg Gorgon, Yeti and Pixie races).

The system used in the Camp Myth game also is used in a game called Mermaid Adventures, which is also child-friendly, and lets you make merfolk with fish, eel, shark, octopus, jellyfish, sea urchin, lobster, and ray tails and fins and so forth, a variety of powers, etc. You might also consider checking it out, here (http://thirdeyegames.net/mermaid-adventures/).

Camp Myth: Kraken Fishing's kickstarter closes today at noon. I'm looking forward to the book, even if, as far as stretch goals go, it's still just a little short ($293 as of this writing) of getting the three extra RPG races. The Art of Kraken Fishing and the postcard from Camp Myth, however, are both going out to all backers who support it by at least $20, so that's pretty good.

I've donated enough to make my own character, but I'm not sure which race to select. The last book came with an adventure with an abundance of centaurs and kitsune and minotaurs, so (even though I'm a Saggitarius and like centaurs and find kitsune to be cool), I'm not going to go with those three. I've never been all that interested in Cyclopes, and they, along with Dryads, also had fan-made characters in the last story. I'm also not too interested in Redcaps or Leprechauns, and the main character (as well as two fan-made ones) is a fae, so doing one of those seems like a bad idea as far as making something original goes. Kappas might be cool, but honestly, I've never been that into turtles and I've found the head-depression full of water thing to be a bad idea and sorta icky. I also have no real interest in Yeti, and while gorgons are awesome (I was Medusa for Halloween one year), I don't think I'd actually want to be one, per se.

So that narrows it down to three choices:
1. Harpy - I really liked the idea of a male harpy, and they're my favorite of the original races because they can fly. I always thought that harpies needed some more spotlight, and as a member of the glbt subculture, I can appreciate gossiping, self-centered, unbelievably vain, materialistic social climbers. There are also no named harpies in the book or the rpg yet (though I think there's one in the iPhone/iPad game, Hydra Raising... I can't tell since I lack both an iPhone and an iPad).

2. Siren - This seems like a no-brainer... after all, I am a member of the mernetwork, and I do enjoy singing karaoke (which might be an interesting trait for the harpy, too). The main problem is that the RPG does mention a Siren character (the head counselor for the aquatic campers), and in Phoenix Watching there is an illustration of a fan-made character who is a siren. Then there's the fact that there aren't any rules for Siren player characters in the RPG yet... so while I could invent a character that I could play for the others (including the Pixie, if the stretch goal is reached), I couldn't do that for the Siren. Also, while I'm fine with (and even expect) vanity, the Siren personality description is kind of even more hindering than the fact that they lack legs... at least Harpies are social. Still, it's hard to resist the chance to have a professional artist make a picture of my mersona and have my mersona written into a short story.

3. Pixies - I admit, I was disappointed when the description of the Fae revealed that they were basically elves with green freckles, hoping instead for something more like the victorian fairy image. I was really happy to hear that Pixies (who, from the rpg description, ARE basically victorian fairies) were the third proposed new race. However, Pixies are supposed to be tiny... and I'm 6'2", and don't really imagine myself as short very often, much less doll-sized. Also, in the rpg description of pixies in the random mythical creatures you might encounter section, their traits were primarily based on swarms of them attacking, and while they can fly, it's doubtful that they can fly as well, as high, as far, etc, as harpies.

Which do you guys think I should go with? I suspect I know the answer, but I'd still appreciate your reasoning.

Hmm, that's a tough question! Of course "Siren" would seem like the obvious choice here, but your other two choices are pretty intriguing as well...

While I do love Victorian fairies, I'm not sure I see you as a tiny pixie either (Holy Geez you're tall! You're like a whole foot taller than me!).

Now harpies are neat creatures, and I really do love seeing what modern writers do with them. I particularly liked the depiction of Harpies in the His Dark Materials series by Philip Pullman. And a male Harpy could indeed be very interesting...

Of course, I'm also a fan of the Siren :P So I suppose I'm not a lot of help there.

No worries, Moonlight, I was just sharing it in case there were some last minute people on here who wanted illustrations of their personas... I definitely know what it's like to be short on money, since I have been out of work for awhile... they did have a brief spike in backers last night, and it got very close, but didn't quite make it to that one stretch goal... the kickstarter just closed.

However, now I am definitely going to need people's advice on what sort of character to make, camp activities he should excel in, etc

YESSSSSSSSSS! The author of Camp Myth was so excited about all the support for Kraken Fishing that he personally unlocked the gorgon, yeti, and pixie races! Playable pixies! Gosh darn it, now I don't have the excuse that pixies wouldn't be playable, so I am back to the drawing board... but here's hoping that sirens, naiads, selkies, merrow, nagas, tengu, satyrs, djinn and the like are forthcoming, perhaps in the next book, Camp Myth: cyclopean archery!

Description: Irenidae is a tall, lanky harpy with the feathers of a fairy bluebird (hence his name, which comes from the scientific name for the family of those birds). His eyes are a rich brown, like the color of unearthed soil, and his black hair feathers out to the sides. He has an avian curiosity and an interest in magic spells and rituals, but he grew up in a farm in Tennessee, and he loves country music, fresh fruit, and fried chicken. He has two hobbies (besides magic): kite-flying (he goes out with a group of friends, each with kites, and he soars up to keep the kites aloft when they look like they might tumble down into the trees) and falconry. Since he started going to camp, his parents gave him a pet thunderbird, whom he named Tesla. He's comfortable with most forms of athletic activity, though not particularly gifted in any of them, and he's a decent shot with bow and arrow or lasso. He has two items which grant him a magical boost to his skills: his lasso is enchanted to be more accurate, and reading from his grandmother's book of spells increases his knowledge of magic, runes and rituals.

Mythic Race: Siren

Description: Encore is an attractive young siren, with flowing shoulder-length dark hair with a few strands of iridescent silver, dark "come hither" eyes. His tail is silvery-white, with a rainbow iridescence to the scales and a number of fins, giving him a white koi appearance. He has a younger sister, Rhapsody, and lives off the East Coast, where he can swim with dolphins and occasionally surprise the surfers. After years of being overshadowed in siren plays and musicals as part of the chorus, he discovered his true talent when he attempted karaoke for the first time, and found out that in addition to having a powerful voice, he's also a gifted vocal mimic. Pop, Rock, Jazz, Rap, Country, Showtunes, Disney, Oldies... he can do it all, in a variety of voices! He is well traveled, swimming to the frozen waters of the far north and down to the tropical waters of the Caribbean, exploring the sunken mysteries of the Mediterranean and the Aegean, and in his travels he's picked up a great deal of knowledge about the different mythic communities around the world. Both in his dramatic performances and in his travels, he's picked up some combat skills, and in the northern ocean he was honored by a pod of narwhals with the tusk of one of their fallen warriors, which he has fashioned into a staff/spear. The spirit of the narwhal guides his strikes with the spear, making him a better combatant while using it. He also has a memento: a mother of pearl hand mirror given to him by his mother, which he can gaze into when he's in need of introspection. He feels like Sirens are slightly better than most other mythic races, but he's not so arrogant that he doesn't recognize the others' advantages, and he while he doesn't ALWAYS have to be the center of attention, he hates being ignored or overlooked. He is more friendly than a lot of the other Sirens, however, and he is also somewhat creative.

Camper: Snapdragon Philenor
Mythic Race: Pixie
Player: Martin
Description: Snapdragon is a miniature martial artist and adventurer, with curly dark hair with red-gold highlights and a pair of wings shaped and colored like those of a pipevine swallowtail, but with the lavender iridescence, stripes and spots of a Sulkowski Morpho. He is a thrill-seeker, always excited to try new things, and ready to stand up for his friends and put those who abuse their power in their place. He might be tiny, but when he's wearing his armor (woven from the silk of a butterfly chrysalis) and able to heal himself or others with his unicorn horn (a gift for guiding a lost foal back to the herd), and armed with his myth army knife or his tiny fists and feet, he's a force to be reckoned with. One of his goals is to improve his sparring skills and practice to increase his natural athleticism, as well as pick up some more survival skills. He can hide himself and other things if necessary, but he's not particularly good at it yet. He also likes to create tools, weapons, art... and traps, though his small size makes maneuvering the materials difficult. He knows a bit about magic and spells, and he'd like to know more, but those take longer to master than a good uppercut. He is fairly friendly, but he's also not willing to put up with any mean-spiritedness, and would prefer to flutter off into the upper branches of the Peridexion Tree than hang out with jerks.
