Netflix it is, then! Thanks, SeaGlass Siren.
I'd love to discuss the content, though, if people are on board. I'm still not sure how I feel about cetaceans in captivity. One one hand, those who cannot survive in the wild make excellent ambassadors to the public, to bring about awareness and compassion in the ignorant. However, I hate the thought and feel of marine mammals kept captive in general, particularly in parks that feature mechanized attractions, like rumbling rollercoasters. I KNOW that has a negative effect on their echolocation abilities.

if you can-- FIND A SCREENING! It is a very important film and opened my eyes to a lot of things. I hope that the general public is able to see this, as I believe it is vital at this point!

On October 28th, it will air on CNN! Or maybe it's the 26th...
Anyways! Being a marine biology student, I am beyond excited to see this, thought I know it is going to be VERY BIASED. Keep that in mind when watching! I've heard stories about it already, and some of them are just very exaggerated. The people who made the film are definitely extremists, and are going to try and make every possible point they can about why cetaceans shouldn't be in captivity, and there is not a doubt in my mind that the truth is very stretched.
I believe the whales at SeaWorld and other marine parks are kind of a case-by-case deal. Some should be in the wild, and some would die if they were ever released. A good handful of the whales these days were actually born in captivity, and not captured, so releasing them (when they don't know how to thrive, hunt, or find their pods) would ultimately mean death.
I disagree that the animals should have ever been captured in the first place, but releasing them now is just not a good idea :/
So when you guys watch Blackfish, keep a very open mind! Don't let one movie sway you to think captivity is cruel until you do your research!

I'm still siding with the idea that captivity isn't good... Unless they're handicapped but then again the thought of performing inside a cage/bathtub when you're handicapped until the day you die is a bit depressing. But I'm a simpleton.

@ Brielle, Great points, but I am looking at this through an animal rights/welfare lense. My points are:
1. animals are not ours for entertainment, food, etc. NO matter how big or small. Disagree if you like; this is my belief. 2. Perhaps the film might lean towards one point of view over the other (as in, orcas and cetaceans should not be in captivity, forced to perform), but many of the points were important to be exposed-- such as a greed of a corporation such as Sea World. Employees are caught on camera giving false information to park guests and even the trainers admit they had no idea what they were talking about-- they just regurgitate information that was "fed" to them. 3. Just because you're born in captivity doesn't mean that you don't still have the real instincts to do the things that these animals should be doing and have every right to do. Sure, if captive whales/dolphins were to be released into the wild, they'd probably from not knowing "how"---but who's fault would this be? It all stems from my point #1-- animals are NOT ours. They don't belong to us. What I took away from this film as far as choices I could make to stop what I believe to be an injustice on many levels is simple. Our money speaks for us.....what we support financially enables something to be or not to be. By buying a ticket to seaworld or an aquarium where animals shows are presented, you support such a program. Personally, I don't support any animals in captivity for the sake of entertainment, no matter how small or large. This comes from after working 2 years as a conservation educator at a local zoo, as well. All in all, I feel the film is important if not vital to our times right now. Open your eyes and take a look at what is happening in Taiji right now with the annual dolphin hunt. Many of the dolphins who are not slaughtered are sold to aquatic parks/shows all over the world....

I also agree it is a case by case situation. In my opinion, proper AZA accredited should be enough for me to feel comfortable that the animals in a certain park are in a good care system, but I must say there is a huge difference in commercial parks like Seaworld and places that put animals before profit, like decent zoos, who often participate in Species Survival Plans.

I haven't seen the film yet, and I'm not sure if I want to. :-/
Like usual, I can see both sides of the story:
Animals' side- They shouldn't be trapped in a fish bowl and made to perform the same routine over and over. Swimming in the same place they probably memorised by the time they were a year old, if not earlier. They can't hunt, they don't always have something to do. They have to wait for someone to clean their tank rather than swim off and let the current take care of things.
Humans/Conservationists/Etc. - Some of these animals are injured to the point of no survival in the wild. Some can't function in the wild, either. Also! One point that I seem to see disregarded constantly about Sea World... They don't JUST have cetaceans, they also have many other types of marine life. Many of which they have for conservational purposes. They have a breeding program for manatees, which need help to survive. They have many fish that most people wouldn't know about otherwise, and they bring these little things to public light.
If a kid never knows about the wonders of the ocean and what lives there, how will they ever know not to pollute it? Some kids might not even comprehend that there are living creatures out there! It's just a giant swimming pool. If I didn't go fishing as a child, I wouldn't really know that there are fish living in the ocean. Why? Because every time I went swimming, I didn't see shite. We were warned about rays and I'd see the crabs, but that's it. Thanks to places like Sea World, Long Beach Aquarium and Monteray Bay Aquarium, I know what lives out there. (Plus many books) I know that the ocean is full of life and variety.
I guess, I'm just saying that we overlook the educational value of some of these places. Now, am I saying that they're all justified? Heck no. Some of them are purely for show, and that isn't right, but when an animal is getting better health care than some people, is fed more often and better than many people I know and living longer... Well, I dunno. I think they're doing *something* right. Also, remember that they realise that these animals need enrichment. They can't just expect them to be happy swimming around.
Polar bears, lions, tigers, monkeys, beta fish, you name it. Every animal needs enrichment.
I don't see people going around trying to close down zoos because they're keeping the lion in a cage that's smaller than the territory it would have in Africa. Or when they make a few of the animals perform for kids that it's cruel to them. What about them? If you don't have something entertaining, children are less likely to pay attention to it. If it's some amazing and awe-inspiring, their more likely to remember it.
Just saying. I... Wow this has turned into a bit of a rant. Haha Sorry.
Anyways! To sum it up:
Sea World isn't the only place housing animals in "too small" cages and making them perform. There are plenty of the other places doing that, but all in an effort for conservation. Children are our future, and we need to make things appealing for them to make them care about it. Any cage is "too small" compared to the area a wild animal - of any type - would have. Also, many animals that have been born in captivity don't know any better. You can't miss what you've never had.
So.... Yeah. I feel a bit better now getting that out. ^_^
If anyone disagrees or what not, that's fine. You don't have to believe what I do, just as I don't have to believe what you do. I just wanted to get my voice and feelings out about this. Been buggin' the gills out of me.

YES YES YES Kailani. I agree on so many of your points. Demanding respect for one creature but not all is hypocritical. That is why I take the stance that I do. As far as education, unfortunately, so many of these facilities throw this term around like it is some kind of blanket statement. As if it is "educational" than it is ok. Where is the line between entertainment and education drawn? And at what cost? Wonder is priceless, but with the surge of technology and "I need/want it now" attitude of today, so much of it is lost. I remember trips to the aquarium very vividly from my childhood. It awed me beyond belief and stirred something deep inside me. I am sure many of us here share this sentiment. You raise good points as far as "what about the experience" and with that experience, the knowledge...and possibly the drive to do something..... As far as injured/rehabilitated animals in captivity, this is where humans could be of assistance. The AZA accredited zoo I worked at featured these kinds of creatures and I was always proud to relay this information. Sadly, I highly doubt this is the case as far as most animals, especially performing animals. I read that a captured and trained dolphin can sell for up to $15,000. This just solidifies the greed behind the operation for me....not to mention that most animals in captivity are INBRED and have a significantly shorter lifespan than those who are lucky enough to exist in the wild.
Brielle
09-12-2013, 07:22 PM
It really is a case-by-case thing. The thing is though, none of the whales can be released because they are too accustomed to captivity.
Keiko, the whale from Free Willy, was released, never found his pod, was attacked by other pods, and still depended on humans for food. He ending up dying shortly after... So yes, I agree that animals should not be taken from the wild, but the ones that are already in captivity, unfortunately have to stay there, for their own good.
I think marine parks are good, though I've never been to SeaWorld. They have definitely had a dark history regarding capturing and such, but they don't practice that anymore, at least, no US marine parks do. I also think that it's the marine parks that spark the interest of conservationists, biologists, etc, to even go into that field. I know that if I had never gone to an aquarium as a child and had never pet a sting ray, I wouldn't have the same passion about the sea that I do now, and here I am, studying to become a marine biologist.
It really depends how you look at it, and I'm not saying it's all good. There definitely are pros and cons. I know, though, that the animals aren't being "forced" to perform, and will still get the same amount of food whether they do or not. It's not a "slave" thing, despite popular belief. It's also not a "bathtub" thing, though I do agree that the tanks aren't exactly as big as they could be.
Just, do your research. Don't just see one documentary about it and believe everything they said. Points are lied about and exaggerated, just like they are in all debates.
I do think orcas, belugas, dolphins, and all marine mammals in captivity could have a better life in the sea, and are definitely not ours for entertainment (or food! I am a vegetarian and have been for years), but most animals in captivity simply cannot be released. As long as no more are captured, I'm fine with them being there, granted they are treated efficiently, and the ones at all the parks I know of in the US are.

Just found out that the DVD/Blu-Ray release date for region 1 (N. America & Japan) is Nov. 12, so it should be up on the paid streaming services at least by then.
Also, if you don't feel you can wait, and/or you have Raina's issue that the theatres aren't showing it in your town, high quality versions are also up on P2P as BitTorrents.

I kinda disagree with the above. I've never been to an aquarium, I've never been to seaworld or marineland and I still want to be a marine biologist :/ different strokes for different folks I suppose. There was one dolphin who was captured 4 years ago and they reintroduced them to the wild and it found their pod just fine.

little known fact, the woman who was Killed- Dawn, one of the top trainers, was Mermaid Melissa's boss at the time of death. Melissa was an orca trainer briefly and a dolphin trainer before deciding to stick with pearl diver. Im watching the documentary now. It's so morbid to see Dawn and to hear the 911 call and holy crap like seriously. REGARDLESS OF YOUR OPINIONS ON THIS MATTER JUST KNOW THIS DOCUMENTARY IS NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART. Actually, the documentary The Cove was proven to be exaggerated. Look it up. But i see the point you make and agree Seaworld is definitely not the best place to house animals.
I want to go ahead and put this out there: I volunteer at wildlife reserve that is very different from zoos. The staff is very small and is located on a private compound. The animals there are not taken from the wild or exchanged from with zoos, but animals they have rescued from people like drug dealers who think it is a wise idea to spend their money on a black market tiger. Before the accept a new animal, they background check it and make positively sure they are unable to be brought back into the wild. The come in broken; physcially, mentally, and emotionally. But if you could see the bond between one of them and their caretaker, maybe you'd see that not every place that holds animals in captivity are bad. There is an obvious emotional bond they develop and the caretakers (some live on or near the property) give so much to making these animals heal in all aspects and live a comfortable life.
Yes, Seaworld is different and likes to exploit there animals and some zoos are controversial, but these people put the animals first and I wish more places like this would have the care this reserve gives their animals so zoos wouldn't have this overall bad reputation.

I live with a dark secret concerning orcas. I grew up within 30 min of SeaWorld in Orlando and we went almost every week. To sum it up, my brother and I experienced a very sad event concerning Shamu, her baby, and another whale. He and I have been scarred for life from it. For years this event lingered in my subconscious, and my brother and I suffered stress and nightmares for years but blacked out the cause (as children tend to do as a coping mechanism). Now, that dark event haunts me so badly I have to see a therapist bc I suffer from serious nightmares, as well as occasional mermares (when I've mermaided out in the deep ocean I've had flashbacks to what I saw and have had to get out of the water and be medically treated). Just watching the trailer for this movie gave me a real panic attack that almost put me in the hospital. I do not hate orcas. I hate what SeaWorld has put them through, and the wonderful lives shattered by their mistreatment of this grand animal. I really hope that this documentary, that I can not even watch, really makes people think about supporting other places that save lives and not exploit our fish friends who can not cope with living in a tank.

i just watched this movie and while i knew about some of the events and kinda what happened to dawn. watching and seeing what happened was horrifying. after having been to seaworld for my 18th bday to do the trainer for a day. i couldn't help but feel horrible for the animals. i watched them drain one of the tanks in back where they were keeping female dolphins so they could medicate them and pull blood. it was so sad. then working with the beluga's and seeing how tiny their tanks were.....i don't have words right now. after that as much as i wanted to work with those animals, i just couldn't support an industry that treats their animals like that.
its actually cause of that on why i want to do more to help the oceans and trying to build my own tail right now so that i can do mermaiding events and use the proceeds to go towards organizations that are trying to help the oceans and clean the oceans up.

I've watched it three times too! It's really good. I think they should also stop breeding the orcas then taking the babies away. That's really cruel. especially when the mother cries for them for a very long time trying to locate them after they're taken. And on the topic of what to do with Orcas who have been in captivity for a very long time, I believe in one part of the documentary a woman says that the Orcas who can't be let go into the wild be put into open ocean pens ( That's what they're called right?) To live out the rest of their lives. Sure, they'll technically still be captive, but they'll have much more room to swim and avoid other Orcas in the pen and at least they'll know what the ocean is like.

the thing is, no one really knows. The animals would likely become property of the state. I don't think they could legally get away with killing them, but it would be too expensive to reintroduce them, and reintroducing orcas who were born in captivity fails. It fails for ones who were wild caught too for the most part. :(
