View Full Version : Mer-treasures Swap?

This idea came to me the other day, after a mer I sent a fossil shell rock to (an extra goody tucked in with his purchase) loved the surprise, and asked to trade some shells for some sand from my beach :p

I've participated in well-organized, multi-member swaps before on a knitting and fiber arts website I belong to, and it's been great fun. Now I'd like to do a swap of mer-treasures with mers from all over the world on mernetwork! It's kind of like mini-mer-Christmas all year long!

Here's how the really good swaps I've participated in generally go:

First, before you sign up for a swap, there will be a questionnaire. This includes things such as where in the world you can ship to, what kind of things you like, any particular types of mer-treasures you're on the lookout for, what kind of mer you are, If you're allergic to anything, etc... Nothing too invasive.
Everyone signs up by a certain date. They are paired up with someone to swap with - it may be the same person that's swapping with them, it may not be. It can be a secret who everyone's swapping with, or not. This is really up to how much like Christmas you guys want it to be. :D Then we each assemble a "goody box" with pre-specified types of goodies in it: I think it would be a good rule of thumb to have at least three nice local specimens (shells, fossils, sea glass, agates, whatever washes up on your shores), but as for other things, we can work out a few extra goodies to throw in there if people want to do this model. Swaps usually work out a determined price range of things or what should be included; but you're always free to add a little something extra for your swappee!

Now I bet some of you are saying, "But Miyu, I don't live in a coastal area!" That's okay! You can include pretty pebbles from a local creek (I have quite a few encrusted with pastel petrified moss), petrified wood, stones... But little natural curios is only about half the swap, because I'd love to see mers making little crafts to send to each other as well! :D

This could be done monthly, every two months, or quarterly.
Mers who join in later on are free to participate as long as they sign up by the next deadline! Everyone will get lots of different people to swap with if it ends up being an ongoing thing (which I hope it will!)

So what I need from you guys is input - who's serious about it, what you'd like to see, do you want "secret" swaps or does everyone want to know who's swapping with who?

What a sweet idea! Shipping would be a pain in the arse, but this is such a lovely, communal idea. Hopefully, if it comes through, everyone operates based on goodwill, and contributes things that they genuinely think are nice, and get nice things in return. :)

I love swaps! I do lots of craft swaps and some of my photography friends have a Valentines day swap. Count me in!

(PS: I also collect sand from all around the world!)

I would love to do a swap, but the two things that concern me are:

1. The shipping costs... Because this can get pricey, and fast.
2. The fact that mailing involves giving out your address to someone... And I've already had a stalker situation happen twice, so I just can't bring myself to get put in that situation again.

Miyu

Syrena: Yeah, shipping can get to be a pain. A lot of swaps I've done have people who can only send within their country, and also people who don't mind sending elsewhere. We can also do mostly local, with occasional special-occasion worldwide swaps, if people would like. I know that sometimes swaps get "swap angels" - people who have the means and are gracious enough to cover someone's shipping (or part of it). Shipping is one reason I'll be trying to keep the packages small... Some of the craft swaps have had large boxes that cost a good amount to ship, but shells and jewelry and such is rather small and relatively light. The package I recently shipped cost a total of about $5 (including the little box), so I'm thinking a better way to ship may be to go buy a package of small padded envelopes - you can ship from home, and it comes out cheaper.

Another thing about "swap angels"... If someone sends out a swap but never gets one in return, or gets a package full of not-nice junk... usually someone (or a few someones) will band together to send them something nice so no one gets left out. Sometimes people do this anonymously, sometimes not. There's a lot of really kind-hearted people on the fiber website I belong to. :D

PearlieMae: Oh yay! I know there's at least one other mer I know of on here who collects sand! I like sand too, but it gets messy if I leave it anywhere, so I usually just make some bottle pendants with them :)

Anahita: That is totally understandable, I get where you're coming from there. I'll have to go take a look back and see what the other swaps did for privacy. I know only a handful of people (the swap planners, who are very trustworthy people) had everyone's address. Me personally, I move so often that mail quite frequently gets sent to a friend/family members' mail, and I know some regular swappers keep a P.O. Box for things like swaps and selling crafts and the like. Either way, addresses will be kept OFF the forums, with a list maintained by a trustworthy individual or two. There is absolutely NO WAY anyone's address will be published on the forums, as Mernetwork comes up in Google searches very easily. I am also very concerned about my privacy, due to some seriously crazy exes, so I am very aware of privacy concerns.

Also, having done a few swaps myself, I know shipping can get expensive rather quickly! Especially for someone on a very tight budget. Making swaps every two months or more instead of every month can help with that; also, no-one is obligated by any means to participate in every single swap! When I knew I couldn't afford shipping, I just wouldn't sign up for that month's swap (Every swap, anyone who want to participate - regardless of if they've done previous swaps - has to sign up for the new one, so it's always an option to skip a month or two, or even just participate in only one swap ever!).

I would love to do this!

Pfff I WISH mine were exes! At least then they'd have a logical excuse for their crazy! All I got were crazy delusional guys who couldn't understand that politeness is not synonymous with "this chick is totally into me." Actually, I wasn't even polite to one of them, I was outright rude to get them to go away.... So I dunno. I guess no one told them growing up just because you like someone/find them pretty, doesn't mean they like you/find you attractive back. :P

I totally dig the idea of a PO box though. I didn't even think about one of those. I just have to figure out the cost for it (because between that, my crafting, and the shipping my partner may actually put his foot down and tell me to find a cheaper form of entertainment, lol!) If my partner lets me get one, I'm totally down for this though!

Miyu
09-02-2013, 05:11 AM
Oh goodness, those kind of guys... >.< That totally stinks, I'm sorry.

P.O. Boxes are pretty handy! If you make stuff to sell, it's a really good way to keep people from ordering from you just to get your address. I hear they're pretty reasonable, especially if you only rent the smallest size box. I've looked into it, and perhaps when I finally get settled in a stable environment where I know I'll be there for more than a year, I'll probably get one myself. It's also a really secure way to order online, as it's under lock and key, and mail thieves can't steal your packages :P

I'm totally game! I live in Ky, but I am close to the only waterfall in the northern hemisphere to have a moonbow (almost) every full moon. How cool would it be to have stones from that pool?

As far as shipping goes, I ship from my ups store all the time (I sell decorated cookies) and hiding my address was VERY important. They can print the label at the store with a barcode for your address, so that ups knows where it comes from, but the receiver does not. They just see your name.

I am so totally down for this. I do reddit gifts swaps and they're so much fun :3
Even overseas shipping can be really cheap depending on thickness/weight, so maybe we can have a couple of larger exchanges (for those with enough cash for shipping large items) and a few smaller exchanges in between, with little things like bracelets and sand and shells, stuff that fits in a normal envelope :)

And Raina, surely you could scrounge up some sand or pebbles from nature - no need to give away your stuff :P

Miyu
09-02-2013, 09:51 PM
Oh wow, I'm so glad there's so much interest!

WillowAnne: That sounds amazing! Those would be some super-powerful stones if you're into energy or magic work at all :) And I didn't know about that barcode thing, that could be really helpful for hiding addresses!

Melaina: I was thinking that might be a good idea, have maybe 2-4 bigger swaps a year so everyone can get stuff from around the world at some point. I figured a big swap would probably take place around Christmas/Holiday time, and another at some point around summertime, but I don't know if people want just two big swaps or if there's interest for more. I'm glad to hear overseas shipping doesn't have to be expensive, I know I've gotten a few small packages of goodies form overseas and postage wasn't outrageous. One reason why I was trying to keep the packages small little goodies, because a few shells/some sand and a little handmade present should be pretty lightweight. Well, I guess I'll have to not pack a ton of fossils from my beach in each box, those could add up LOL.

Raina: Melaina's right, we don't want stuff that's already yours, LOL! But I noticed we have a lot of weirdos (LOL) on here that collect rocks, shell, sand, etc :P We'd be happy to have you too!

Absolutely! They're super charged with energy. It's such a beautiful place. My husband and I were actually married there!
And I guess I'm one of those weirdos... I LOVE pinecones and dirt from various places. My husband and I collect sand from different beaches, too!

I can see that we'll be sending things other than sand, shells, and rocks, LOL! SO many diverse collections, I've never heard of collecting pinecones, that's neat!

Alrighty, so obviously a swap of some sort is definitely a go! :D Is there any other mers who've done swaps in the past who'd like to help me handle the logistics to get this all set up?

I'm considering having a monthly sign-up (that is, there's a swap each month, with anyone who wants to participate that month officially signing up for it), but that seems like it may be too much for some people. Should I just leave it to individual mers to decide which months they feel like joining, or should I make every swap bi-monthly (once every two months)?

Bear with me folks, I'm new at being quite this active in a community. I do love being active and having responsibilities, I'm just not *exactly* sure what I'm doing yet - heck, I recently made my first-ever tutorial just for the lovely folks here on mernetwork, to fill a need that my google-fu couldn't fill (woah, wow?).

I like the idea of bi-monthly. That way, I have time to gather stuff and get it shipped. If it is every month, though, I wouldn't mind!

I definitely say let the mers decide which months they feel like joining. Some months are busier for others, and automatically expecting every one who signs up to swap every two months might end in disappointment for the other mers who were expecting to get something..

Anahita: No matter what, there will be an individual sign-up/roll-call each swap. I find that this is what has worked best in the craft swaps I have participated in :)

WillowAnne: I know what you mean, a month can zoom by so fast! :p

Just let me know what you need help with. :D

If you don't have one yet here is the information post (edited to make mer related) I used on the other forum to start a swap (please note I left the dates in to give you an idea of timelines):

It's time for the next round of goodies to go out! http://windstoneeditions.com/sites/all/modules/smileys/packs/Roving/smile.png Here is the information on the Summer 2010 Gift Swap!

What it is: If you enlist, your name gets thrown into a hat. You will receive the name of one person, and someone else will receive your name. Your goal is to put together a small care package for that person. Letters, candles, incense, chocolate, bath goodies, foodie goods, craft-store finds, etc. Something nice to brighten his or her day. You might even get a new friend out of the deal.

Timeline:
April 1st, 2010 -- Sign-ups open
April 30th, 2010 -- Sign-ups close
May 1st, 2010 -- Swapper notifications
May 15th, 2010 -- The last day to notify me of a back-up need
June 1st, 2010 -- Last Day to put packages in the mail

General Guidelines:
-- All US domestic packages *MUST* have shipping confirmation/a tracking number.
-- It is suggested you include at least 3 items in your package if you are getting smaller gifts; if you wish to send one large item that is fine too.
-- General price range will be $25 - $35 total spent on gift items, though if you'd like to invest more, that's fine. And $25 is not a mandatory minimum that you have to spend-- if you're good at crafts or you have a knack for finding thrift store treasures, that's cool, too.
-- Please, please, do not ask to participate if you are unsure about your ability to follow through on your end. Yes, there are generous people who have and will throw together back-up packages so that no one gets left out. No, that does not mean that it's okay to flake. Please note: *May 15* is the absolute last date to tell me that you need to bow out.

Got it? Good! http://windstoneeditions.com/sites/all/modules/smileys/packs/Roving/smile.png
To participate, please fill out this questionnaire and send it to *my email* (please make sure to type out my email the correct way rather than just copying and pasting; trying to avoid spammers!), with the subject line "Summer Gift Swap"
