I got to try out my mermaid tail today! It is spandex with a finis tempo monofin. My boyfriend helped me make it, and he is already talking about making another one. I am so lucky to have a guy who can sew. And besides, what guy wouldn't want a mermaid for a girlfriend, right? Anyway....

My family loved the tail, and my aunt was bragging about having a mermaid in the pool. Swimming in it went great, but the paint on my fluke came off :( Has anyone had luck painting over holographic spandex? I used Tulip fabric paint, but clearly that was the wrong choice. Any advice would be wonderful!

Have some pictures :D

That looks fantastic! Do you have any photos of it dry, before (or even after) the paint came off?

You and the tail look so pretty! :D
I've used Lumiere fabric paints over holographic before, and that held up really well. I just heat-set it with a hairdryer (instead of ironing it) and it holds up really well :)

Melaina - I didn't even think that the paint would come off the first time, so I'm kind of kicking myself for not taking a picture of it before because it looked nice. Here's as close to a "before/after" as I'm going to get:

The second picture on my first post is probably the best of what it looked like originally. It had a lot of black on it towards the top of the fluke, with lines that feathered down to the bottom. When it started coming off, it fell off in long, stringy lines. It looked like slugs were in the pool! So gross. I'm glad that I tested it in a pool instead of the beach because I would not want fish eating the paint. There is still some left on the tail, but not as much as before.

Mizuko- I will definitely go get the Lumiere paints. I just looked them up, and I see that they have metallic ones too. I might have to add some colors! Thanks for the advice.

Love the scale fabric! Where'd you find it?

Thanks everyone for the positive words! I am one happy mermaid right now.

Aziara - Thanks! I ordered it through spandex world. It was on clearance, so they don't have that color anymore. Last time that I looked, they still had gold, grey, and pink for $9.99 a yard. Spandex house also has some scale fabric. Search "mermaid" on their website :)
