It's best if you get at least a monofin or a fabric tail to start out with, and this is HIGHLY recommended as to:

- Make sure it's a hobby for you.
- Stretch your muscles and gain some muscles so as to NOT completely stress your body out.
- Make sure you have places you can swim (as many public pools/beaches don't allow tails)

Check out the tailmakers and again, I highly recommend a first tail before going all out. I currently have a Mahina MerFin and I love it to death, I plan to make a fabric tail skin for it eventually and one day of course I want a silicone tail. Good luck! The tailmakers and reviews are your best bet but right now Merberry is just really, really swamped.

I've Done The FII Freediving Course 3x With Brandon Since I Was 16 (19 Now) And I'm A Gymnast And Swim As A Hobby So I Am Positive In My Leg Strength. I Swam In Those. . Full Body Otter Suits (which was easier than swimming normally). I Don't Really Like The Idea Of Fabric Tails. . But I Didn't Know About The Beach And Pool Thing! :0

Fabric tails and monofins are really cheap compared to the high end tails. Even though not necessary, I still think you should look into one to practice with (even Raina still has her practice tail around!).

Also, what about ab muscles? :P

SireneKalypso

XD I've Been A Gymnast Since I Was A Wee Tike So I'm Overall Pretty Strong. (except, amazingly, my arm strength still is shakey)
I Will Admit My Bone Density Is A Little On The Low Side Because Of Medication I Take, I Take Lots Of Vitamin D To.Counter It.

I'd be careful if I were you about assuming that gymnast muscles are the same as swim muscles. I'm carp at gymastics, but great in the water, likewise in high school, my friends who were gymnasts couldn't swim all that well, especially not dolphin kick. The most dangerous thing you can do while mermaiding (or any water activity really) is over-estimate your strength and ability, especially if you're thinking leg strength is necessary. If you over estimate on land you can usually recover with nothing much but a bruise or pulled muscle... But if you over estimate in water you can cramp up or sink, and if no one can get to you in time to help, you can drown.

we may seem a bit redundent when we say you may want to start with a fabric or neoprene tail instead of a silicone tail, but we just don't want anything to happen to you on your first tail swim. To go with what Anahita said, My brother is a football player, totally muscled up. Does weight lifting daily, running exercises, pulling weights across the field, the total works. But when he tried on my monofin in my tail (neoprene) He could barely lift it because of the water force and got cramps while swimming with it on. (he was fine with just the fin though. It's just that the tail created more weight and friction in the water.) So we don't necessarily think you can't handle a silicone tail, its just that usually a fabric or neoprene tail is where people start to get their body used to swimming with all that weight and friction on it.
Also, I believe mertailor silicone and neoprene tails are now $500? but I'm not sure.

Echinacea

To get the tail of your dreams, you will probably have to wait for it to be made, so it might be something to consider a fabric or neoprene tail as a cheap practice tail while you are waiting for a fancier one. Also, check around to see if you will have a place to swim with a monofin or tail - my local YMCA says 'no', but I found a local health/fitness club with a pool that is fine with me swimming with either fin or tail. A fabric tail may not make as big a splash with the local pools, too - they may get nervous seeing someone come in with 50 pounds of silicone tail draped over their shoulder, but a spandex or neoprene tail fits in a shopping bag.

The $795 is what he is saying will be the price for his new line, which should be available for purchase soon. Check Mermaid Hyli's review from the photoshoot she did with him for the new tails.

I think a neoprene tail painted with liquid latex is a really good option and will look similar to a silicone tail

I make 2 types of tails:

Beautiful Custom Designed Fabric tails- average price $200 for adults....make sure you look at my facebook page, they are not your average fabric tail ;)
and I also take a limited number of orders of REAL latex tails backed with neoprene, of those I've made 2 and have albums of both on my facebook page as well,
my latex tails are $700 average for adults, as far as I know I'm the only one offering latex tails made of real latex (not bathtub caulking)

Silicone tails are beautiful but as a new mermaid, please keep in mind they typically weigh between 30-60 lbs, can take some mers 5-10 minutes to get them on and most silicone tails cost $1,000-$3,000 and up. My latex tails weigh less than 8 lbs.

Check out my facebook pages, I have TONS of photos of all my tails on there and email me through them if you have any questions (I don't check this forum often)

Thanks and best of luck !

There are several amazing tailmakers out there nowadays. Sirenalia is just now launching, I would definitely recommend looking into her at cost tail contest coming up. I know she's just past the prototypes phase and working now into actual productions, but even her 2nd tail ever made was a higher quality than *some people* after many years of stardom doing the same thing. It depends on what you're looking for, but the standard is all pretty much dragonskin silicone now and the rates for tails are pretty competitive and even across the board, so really it just depends on who's style you like the best and who has a good reputation with coming through on orders the way they should be. I know I'm still pining for a Merbella's tail myself...and I've always wanted a Mermaid Parties tail made by Jesse. I know there are tons of other worthwhile makers I didn't just mention, and I'm not playing favoritism, but these are the names that always pop straight to my brain.

@Sairen- I'm sorry if you felt like we were pressuring you, that's not what was intended. It's just that we see a lot of people get into mermaiding thinking it'll be easy and that a silicone tail is the only way. It's a real bummer when someone pays a lot for a tail and then sells it for a loss when they realize this isn't for them. I'm glad you found a way to make it work for you, and I'm sure you'll love your Merbellas tail :) Post pics!!

Oh jeez, I had no idea how strict and adamant everyone was on here about starting out with a fabric tail... o_o

Sairen, congrats on your start into the mermaiding world! It's awesome that you're already athletic and have had practice freediving and swimming in an Otter suit (those look like so much fun to swim in!). I'm quite honestly surprised that even with all of your experience there are still so many naysayers insisting that a silicone tail can't be done without a trial tail first. I was thinking of going for that route as well (mainly because I'm absolutely broke at the moment so I'd rather save up for just one tail that I really love instead of multiples), but considering how everyone jumped on you for it.... ugh.
Anyways, a tail is a long ways off. Aside from the fact that I have only a measly $100 saved at the moment, I'm not in shape. I need to get into the habit of working out regularly and developing my core and leg muscles before buying a tail. I miiiight consider buying a monofin to start out with, since everyone seems to think it's "training fin or no fin", but I'm loathe to drain myself of the precious little I have saved up so far... :/

I agree with you that if you're going to spend money on a tail, you might as well save up for one you really really want! I have two fabric tails and I hope to get silicone one day soon. It's up to you if you want to start with silicone! Only you know your abilities. Good luck! :)

I did see the last few posts about everyone saying that fabric tail is the best way to go. It is the best way to go, but if you don't want to go that way, don't! We're just here to advise you on what we know from experience and seen for ourselves.

The reasons most mers recommend fabric first:

-You may find when you get a tail that you don't like mermaiding after all. This actually happens a LOT. I myself have had dozens of friends hard core geek out about wanting to be a mermaid, but the minute I put them in a monofin and/or tail they they dropped that idea like a sack of bricks and never looked back. It's just not for some people.
Then there's about half or more of mers who get into mermaiding, are super gung ho for a while, then lose interest within a year or two. If you have a fabric tail it's no big deal. When you have a multi thousand dollar tail, you're going to lose a good chunk of that in resale.

-Silicone tails are HEAVY. Staring off with one you can actually injure yourself. I've seen it happen to people starting of with silicone tails, and/or starting off with a competitor monofin. You use different muscles to swim in and maneuver around in (dry or wet) a tail, so if you put a whole lot of stain on muscles that aren't used to that it can end badly.

-When you're learning, you're going to bang up your first tail something fierce! There's more too it than learning to just swim from A to B. There's different kinds of turns, there's hovering instead of standing on your fluke, there's completely eliminating that nasty habit of ever hopping around on your fluke (balance can be an issue for first timers), there's learning how to gauge where the pool bottom and sides are at all times so you don't scrape anything, ect. This can lead to a lot of scraping, ripping, tearing, all that- even if you're careful! For a fabric tail you can repair it or get a new one. For a silicone one, repairs or replacement is very expensive, especially if you have to send it back to the tailmaker. We're talking a few hundred just for shipping. I've observed a lot of mers going from nothing to silicone or from fabric to silicone have the following happen to them- they scrape off a lot or all the paint on their heels, knees, and even the fluke (I've even seen paint scraped off of the body of silicone tails), put holes in the silicone body, tear the silicone body, tear the waist line, tear off dorsal fins, tear off other extra fins (pectoral, heel, ankle), and over stretch scales from putting it on improperly. That can be one expensive learning process if you go with silicone.

-Starting off in a silicone tail can be scary. Most people don't realize that having your legs bound together in the water until they're in the water having trouble. With a fabric tail you can have that thing of in literally 3 seconds if you need to, even total beginners can have it of in 5 seconds. A silicone tail? If you're panicking you're screwed, becuase that thing is skin tight with very tight foot pockets- it takes more time to get off. Even if people don't have a silicone tail I always advise them to learn with a tail and/or monofin with a floatation device and a safety buddy. For some people swimming in a tail comes natural. For others they just can't get it and they panic. So better to have safety first.
-Silicone tails are heavy and rubbery. They HURT when they hit someone. It takes times to learn to manuver around people safely in a pool with other people, and in close proximity. When I hit someone in my fabric tail it wasn't a big deal, or it just hurt them enough and "Ow!" and "Oh I'm so sorry!" "It's okay, just stung a bit." was all that I got. With a silicone tail you can leave a welt or worse.

Those are the usual reasons why we advise people. But it's just that- advice! If you believe you're experienced enough they won't be issues, or are wiling to deal with said issues, then go for it! We're here to support you :)

SeaSister

Thank you for posting that, Iona. :)

I really appreciate you outlining all of the precautions that come with getting a silicone tail. I found that very informative to read, as opposed to nagging "oh, you might think that you're a really great swimmer and strong and everything, but unless you do it this way you're going to probably suck."

Like I had already mentioned, I don't want to buy a tail unless I'm really going to love it and plan to keep it for a long time. That said, I don't plan on getting a tail unprepared; in the time that it takes me to save up money and tone my body, I want to do as much research as I can and stay actively involved on this site. I probably won't have the money to buy a silicone tail for a year or so (but hopefully I'll have the body before then!), and in that time I plan on making sure that it is something that I really want. There have been things that I was very gung-ho about for a while (eg, corsets and steampunk) but I realized that it wasn't practical enough to justify spending hundreds and possibly thousands of dollars on. More important than practicality, I realized that I wasn't as passionate about it as I thought at first. I was smart enough to never make a purchase. I still want to buy a corset at some point, but it's not high on my priority list. So, with that in mind, I want to make sure that mermaiding really is something for me before purchasing a tail. In the time that it takes me to save up, I plan to think very hard about how serious I am about it, work on swimming with a monofin (might buy one, but I'd prefer to just rent or borrow), swimming in lakes and the ocean, etc. etc. I understand that you can't really understand how much wear-and-tear a tail takes with regular use, or how dangerous it can be to others, until you have one, but I'm hoping that practicing with a monofin will give me a good enough of an idea. I dunno, I might make a fabric sleeve myself, but I'm useless with a sewing machine so it's not likely.

Finally, one of the major reasons I want to get a silicone tail is because it's sort of a deal I've made with myself... One of the ways that people can motivate themselves to keep working hard is to have clear, definite goals in mind. A silicone tail is my goal. Every time I feel like I want to skip a work out or quit my job, I try to think about the reason why I work out and have a job. Not only will I have a great body to show for my efforts but I'll be able to show it off in the amazing tail that I'll have saved up for. When I feel particularly depressed or upset, I'll sometimes draw up another tail design or at least brainstorm ideas for it, which always puts a smile on my face. When I'm on Mernetwork and see an amazing accessory/top/tail, I feel the urge to drop and do twenty push-ups right then and there (well, maybe not all the time... if I did, I'd already be a pro athlete rofl).

Anyways, I'm not saying all of this because I'm trying to justify myself or prove people wrong for saying "you need a fabric tail first". I just wanted to explain that sometimes people have clear, definite reasons for choosing to commit to a silicone tail... we're not all just eager-beavers wanting to hop into a tail without doing the research. :P

So yeah, I hope that clears things up. Iona, thanks again for posting that info - it's good stuff to know, and I really respect what you have to say in regards to mermaiding. :)

I get where you're coming from. I've been swimming for a long time and intend to go straight to silicone, not because I don't think there is validity in having a fabric tail first. I've been swimming longer than I've been walking. I was trained to swim with flippers on and my legs strapped together (my coach was nuts!! but it was a great training tool) and I was a top competitive swimmer before some crap happened.
I understand that people want to give advice on what you should start off with, but like you I have definite reasons and I've done my research.
