NCMerfest will be held on January 3 - 5, 2014 in Cary, North Carolina at the Triangle Aquatic Center. This will be a chance to meet new and old mer-friends and come together to celebrate what we love about all things "Mer!"

This will be the first annual Merfolk gathering of all our friends from all over. We have finalized plans to have Mermaid Raina come down and be our guest mermaid and speaker. Steve Anton will be coming to do underwater photography with his new "reef" setting.

Merwrangler Sean and I will be flying down for the weekend, hopefully leaving on the Monday. We're really looking forward to meeting everyone. I'm going to do either a talk or a workshop- it really just depends on what people would prefer. It'll be about running your own mer-business, and working with kids. I'll be mailing some books down too for anyone who'd like one. Also, Steve is going to be doing underwater photoshoots, but I also really enjoy photography and would love to opportunity to photograph as many mers as I can ;)

Christomer showed me an earlier version of the schedule, which I'm sure is still being figured out, but it looks like a lot of great fun :) I'm really excited to meet some more mers and escape Canadian winter!

I originally plan to go but my dad is having heart surgery in December So im putting mer-meet plans on hold until then.

Hahah yeah so my workshops have been cut back to 90 minutes which should be easier. I think the first day will be working with kids, the second day will be establishing your business :) for those of you planning to be there I'd love to hear your input on how you'd liken the workshops to go. I can't decide if I should do them formal or informally. Handouts, powerpoint, or just sit and talk through some points etc. Let me know ;)

In conjunction, with this we will be offering the "Adopt a Mermaid" program for anyone over the age of 6 that can swim and has the desire to be a merfolk for the day. We have a couple of professional merfolk that have decided to donate there time to this special program. Also a collection of tails have been donated to the program by a wonderful tailmaker. Steve Anton Photography has graciously donated underwater photographs of the adoptee and adopter mermaid together. We will start the adoption drive in October and pair up the merfolk with there adoptee around Christmas. We look forward to giving back to the community and support these wonderful animals.

Quick question - is there any way to get AM and PM added to the schedule of events? I'm trying to parse out how much time we have to swim, participate in events, etc and without AM/PM, the schedule is super confusing. @_@

I'm not sure the schedule is up to date actually there have been some changes. I.e. I am not giving workshops for 3 hours at a time, lol. I'm not responsible for any of that though so I would suggest maybe posting in the FB group or messaging christomer with any ideas :D :D

Ticket Update:

We are releasing 15 VIP tickets for NCMerfest this morning. These tickets allow you entry into all events including John Jay (https://www.facebook.com/aquariumsbyjohn?directed_target_id=381884125272700 ) Breath Hold class. These ticket include Merfest swag and also a private 15 minute underwater photo session with Steve Anton at the Triangle Aquatic Center pool during the weekend.



"Adopt a Mermaid" Program - Volunteer Merfolk Needed

The “Adopt a Mermaid” program will give a person the opportunity to fully experience the joy of being a merfolk for a day. We have a couple of merfolk that have volunteered to be adopted by anyone over the age of six that can swim. During the day, the adopted merfolk will spend the time with there adoptee during which time the adoptee will get a full merfolk makeover by the adopted mermaid from head to tail. A collection of tails have been donated to the program. They will then have the chance to swim together and have underwater photographs taken by Steve Anton. The adopted merfolk will stay in touch during the year with there adoptee. A portion of the proceeds from the adoption will go to NCMerfest charity of Sirenian International, Inc.

We have 12 adoption slots available. Currently 6 of them have been filled. If you are interested please send the following information:

This two part class is for those that have just purchased or want to purchase an underwater camera system and are new to underwater photography. Topics covered include effects of the underwater environment, diving skills and safety for the underwater photographer, equipment selection, setup, use and care and maintenance, camera and lens functions, underwater strobe exposure and basic shooting techniques, downloading, viewing and filing your images.

MERMAID OLYMPICS

"Where merpeople inspire with their merfeats of strength! At the Mer-Olympics, we believe every merperson has a skill and talent that is valued, and we believe in rewarding those who strive for merexcellence with merdallions.”

We are happy to announce the first every "Mermaid Olympics" will be held on Sunday, January 5, 2014. We will be awarding one of a kind mermaid medallions designed by Robin Grattidge (https://www.facebook.com/RobinStGraves?directed_target_id=381884125272700) to the top three scoring teams. The games will consist of the following events:

1. Bubble Blowing
2. Underwater Lyrical Dance
3. Underwater Pod Lyrical Dance (Team Event)
4. Mertender Carrying
5. Mermaid Golf
6. Dinglehopper Dive
7. Siren's Call
8. Flounder... Flop on the Deck like a Fish
9. Trident Toss

The events will be broadcast during the games so that those above the water can see what is going on under the water. We will open up the games for competitors on November 15, 2013. Good luck!

So I am feeling a little generous this holiday pre-season. I have had many emails about stories of why I can't come to Merfest for this reason or that! Well I am no taking anymore excuses and I am granting one Merfolk the Christmas Wish above all others. I will pay for your expenses to come to Merfest and all expenses here except for food and personal stuff. This offer is open to any merfolk in the domestic US. I have to put a small restriction on the wish. I want you to write "Why you deserve to come to Merfest?" The essay will be judged by my little mermaid and she will select the winner on the Sunday after Thanksgiving. The essay must be at least 500 words and must be convincing to a seven year old little mermaid. Please send submissions to wish@ncmerfest.com. We will post the winner at midnight on the Sunday after Thanksgiving! Good luck.

I’m looking for a roommate(or two or three) for NC merfest. I’m pretty much down to room with anyone. Both hotels are $99 a night which is way expensive but I already have my ticket and stuff. Sunday is an hour and a half about the logistics of starting up your business (the nitty gritty), very specific and tailored help with examples :)

I am driving down an should be at the hotel around 7 ish an then maybe going out to dinner. I was wondering if anybody would like to join me an my gf?

FYI Christomer post the details for the Live Streaming on the Merfest FB group. Also, for those not going on the Aquarium trip, We will be at TAC (Triangle Aquatic Center) hanging out.
