The other mermaid giving away a free tail is me!

I'm sorry if it feels like I'm copying you.

I promise I decided a long time ago to do this but my boyfriend/business partner wouldn't let me say anything until we had completed our 3rd tail and had a FB page up. You can even find places where I hinted at it in the forums.

I think it's wonderful you are giving away a tail too!!
I'm really into sharing information so if you ever have any questions about the process or want to chant about technique please please hit me up.

Besos!

Mermaid Oshun

Thank you Firemaid, likewise and best wishes to you as well! I will wait to announce the winner of this tail until after you announce your winner to avoid stepping on toes!
I would again like to thank all the wonderful Mers who have sent in your requests so far. Please continue to like Merdivas Studios. As a sculptor for the past 20 years I hope to share the magic of quality art with the mer community.

Thank you so much Mermaid Fenicia. I will check for it.
Please help to promote Merdivas Studios online to help to make this venture a success. I must admit I feel a bit like an underdog with the amount of likes on the Facebook page. Seeing the meager number of likes on the Facebook page set a deep pain in my heart and brought tears to my eyes. But then I though about my true goal, which is to make people very happy with my art and I made my heart resolved to plow forward against all adversity. You can never go wrong when your heart is in the right place and you try to make others happy.
I will print off all the entries to free up my mailbox. Thank you all for giving me the opportunity to serve you.

Ahhh! That's so cool. I've been thinking that when I get my tail, I would want to get some waterproof foam (or similar material) to wrap around my knees. Including such material IN the tail itself is a fantastic idea. XD

You've sold me with that statement right there, hahaha.

I have decided on ONE of the winners of ONE free dragonskin silicone tails. I have been in communication with that lucky mermaid and am finalizing our agreement now. She will be officially announced once I have all paperwork finished on the arrangement.
I may be offering a second free tail. That is in the works also currently.
Ten Gallons of dragonskin silicon is arriving this week and will be photographed here and on facebook.
Congratulations to that one mermaid with whom I have communicated privately already and the other potential from whom I am awaiting to hear.

I decided to give away TWO tails. So I am currently waiting to hear back from a few other mers before I announce the 2nd lucky mer to receive a free silicone tail.

The Merdiva Signature Scale sheet is in the works now. It will have 1 1/2 inch scales up the center. 1 inch scales vertically outside of that and 1/2 inch scales on the outer perimeter. So the scales get progressively larger toward the center. And conversely the scales get progressively smaller on the sides of the body.

lynsea
09-25-2013, 11:23 AM
That will make the tails look so much more complex! Can't wait to see it.

Mermaid Oshun

Caltuna reminds me that this is the way scales on amphibious creatures tend to be in nature... Larger scales toward the center of the body.

Caltuna reminds me that this is the way scales on amphibious creatures tend to be in nature... Larger scales toward the center of the body.

Just an FYI... Amphibians don't have scales. They can have protuberances that are roughened, but not scales. Frogs, toads, newts, salamanders, mudpuppies, etc., are all amphibians, mostly very smooth skin. Turtles, snakes, gators, croc's, etc., are reptiles, with beautiful coloration and patterning to their skin (erroneously called "scales" due to their shape. For example, snakes shed their skin in whole), but do not have separating scales as an outgrowth from cells with in the skin proper or have pillae to raise them. Fish, have calciferous scales that are grown from specialized skin cells (somewhat similar to our hair follicle) with growth rings, and the ability to replace an individual scale if lost or damaged. The only other animal, is an insect, the Butterfly, that has scales on their wings.

True! Reptiles do have larger scales toward the bodies' centerline, graded to the sides and junction of arms and legs, and diminishing toward tips (toes, tail, facial edges).

Hope this helps!

Yea, very interesting.
However, Pearl didn't say "amphibians"; she said "amphibious", which means nothing more than a creature that can move both in water or on land.
Specifically, I was saying snakes and fish have larger scales on their bellies.
It's best visible on snakes though, which was what we were discussing in that thread.

And I think we all know snakes are reptiles, but many of them are amphibious nontheless.

If it were my tail, I'd keep the fluke unpainted and put a see-through monofin in.
Then it'd really look like a fish's translucent fin <3

Mermaid Oshun
09-27-2013, 02:57 PM
I like that idea Caltuna. In fact I just ordered semi clear, flexible polypropylene for the monofin (like the hydra monofin)...even though this one will be painted.

Echidna
09-27-2013, 03:26 PM
If the paint layer isn't too thick, you might retain some of the translucency.

I wouldn't paint mine because I'd go for a white tail with very diaphanous fins, like this one
14859

Not so flashy.
A tailmaker would probably go "meh, what a boring design" seeing it lol.

Thank you to Daphne for designing the Merdivas Studio Basic Tail Template!
She has also done some wonderful work on the cover and avatar for the Facebook page.
https://www.facebook.com/MerdivasStudios
Check it out in the photos section and let me know which ones you like best! And like the Facebook page.
I will be posting my new H20 Mako Mermaids like fluke maybe today and the H20 skin in a few days.
Feel free to try the template with different colors you might like in your Merdivas Basic tail. These will be going for around $700.00 in full silicone. I want to permanently offer the lowest possible price for the best quality and design in mermaid tails.
Thank you again Daphne!

@mermaidsoph I think she just finished the tail for Yulia (The first lucky winner). I saw pictures of that tail and it was absolutely beautiful, just like the merman tail on FB ;) You might wanna take a look on facebook, I think her page is Merdivas Studios.

I am not mailing Yulia's tail yet because I believe the ankle measurements might be off. I order a new batch of silicone at the end of January and I will make it over. This way I will make it even better so it's all good.

Here are photos of the first tail. So sparkly like sequins

I just sent in an entry and got a reply saying there was no tail raffle. But I probably just worded it incorrectly

Mermaid Oshun
01-18-2014, 06:05 AM
Yes that's right. I did not hold a raffle rather a free tail contest based on a letter of request. The contest is over and Yulia won it.

In other words it was FREE not a raffle. ALL OUT OF MY POCKET. Read the whole thread and not just the first few posts.

Can i ask something? I don't want to sound greedy :) Are you still considering giving away a second tail? Just wondering ;)

Mermaid Myrthe, if you want the chance to win a free silicone scaled bathing suit you may submit your entry to the Merdusa design contest http://mernetwork.com/index/showthread.php?6760-Help-design-a-Medusa-tail&highlight=merdusa
You may also have a corset/bustier style bathing suit if you win if you mail in a corset that fits you.

"Dying child"? That's harsh. You might want to rephrase that...Maybe "terminally ill child"? I mean, ouch. No one wants to be reminded their child is going to die.

I dont have any edit capabilities on my browser for some reason. But thanks for offering the more socially appropriate euphemism. If I get the edit button back I will reword it.

Mermaid Oshun
01-18-2014, 05:09 PM
I had considered the words terminally ill initially but opted for dying for a "down to earth" colloquial simplicity and to not potentially sound pretentious. Every person will have a different perception and there is no satisfying everyone so just be yourself.

Jessica
01-18-2014, 05:21 PM
You're right that there's no satisfying everyone, but in this case I think it's best to consider the feelings of the parents and child first. Children aren't like adults, and many of them are not emotionally mature enough to understand death even if they are battling a potentially terminal illness. Labeling them as "dying" could cause the child unneeded stress and confusion. Also, many parents continue to have hope despite the odds, and continually encourage their children to fight their illness. Hope is a wonderful thing :)

giving a child a tail is a very sweet thing to do. maybe it would be best to just say that you would like to give a tail to a child battling a serious illness. :) have you considered getting involved with the make a wish foundation?

Our modern society doesn't like to contemplate death, hence all the euphemisms regarding the word ("plant protection spray" instead of bug killer is a good example too).

In earlier times, dying people and dead bodies were a common sight for everyone;
today, we tend to shut that out.
People die in closed off rooms behind hospital doors; at most, we see a corpse during a funeral.
Most children have never seen a dead body.

By now, the idea of death alone tends to make people afraid, or at least very uncomfortable.
While that's fully understandable, maybe we should try to re-realize death is a part of life.

give a tail to a child battling a serious illness. :)

and I like this phrasing very much.
I do hope the child in question will be able to wear the tail, and maybe even swim in it, at least once, and derive so much joy from it to feel much better.

Thanks for the ideas ladies. The organization which is handling this year's donation specializes in this exclusively so they totally have it under control. It will all be announced toward the end of 2014. I am actually working on the other sculpting projects first.

*Swims in shyly*

I agree with everything said here. I have had people severely harass me over the internet because of my old-fashioned views of death and my attempt to share a short life with my distant family.

...Then again, death has factored heavily in my life from a young age, so... yeah.

Golden Pearl, I think that's amazing! What charity is it through?

I have also been battling for my life for a number of years. This is why the cause for a terminally ill child is close to my heart. I personally have never been shy of using the words that I am dying, however.

Mermaid Oshun
01-19-2014, 09:49 AM
PS others who are not experiencing it may speculate that a euphemism is in order. But, I personally have come to peace with it. For me saying it is empowering because then it is not happening TO me rather I am an active participant. That may be hard for some who are not dying to comprehend and this is just my own personal way of coping.

Yulia's free tail for 2013/14 has already been made. I am going to make her a SECOND tail however because she gave 2 different ankle measurements and a new tail has to be made for her 2nd (new) ankle measurement. Both tails are paid for with my own money as a gift.
