View Full Version : does the world hate black sequins?

Ok, so I had planned on making my tail out of black and green sequins. I ordered some from cartwright and the greens were perfect, but the black shell sequins were so not black. They were kind of purple-y and nowhere near black. I wanted to use just shell sequins, but I think I might have to reconsider... The regular, flat ones have "bumps" on them, so they're not completely smooth... I'm beginning to think the world hates black sequins.
Has anyone found black sequins? anywhere? I've tried ebay, amazon, cartwrights, and even etsy to try and locate some black sequins (shell, preferably).

Thanks for this! I didn't see any black shell sequins. I was really hoping to make all of the tail with the shell sequins, but the ones from cartwright weren't black at all--they were kind of peacock-colored... hm. I might either have to switch to all of the sequins being the flat ones, or change my design.
Has anyone seen the black shell sequins anywhere?

sorry, I didn't realize you were looking for black shell sequins. I usually go through the places in New York City, but then again I'm very close in New Jersey. Next time I'm in the garment district, I will take a look for you and let you know what I find.

Personally, I love the idea of the peacock sequins!

I know, when they first came, my thought was "ooooooohhhhhmygosh these are so pretty!" and I wanted to do a tail made from them. and then I kept second guessing myself, because I originally put so much time into deciding which colors I wanted for my tail and I didn't want to change on impulse.... So I am trying to decide between the two. eek!
But they are so, so pretty. they alternate between greens, blues, and black (they aren't hologram, so the colors transition well), and when the sequins are all together it looks like someone meticulously blended a bunch of different colored sequins together... so pretty.

Mix them with black sequins for a real scale look, like on a koi fish!

I thought about mixing them with the black sequins maybe , but the ones I got (that were peacock colored) were the shell type, and I can't find any shell black sequins.

Ok, here's a picture of the not-so-black sequins! I think they're sooooooo pretty. The green ones ("carnival") will also be used in the tail, but I'm just trying to decide whether I want to track down "real" black sequins.

And here is a picture of the original design:

I thought about flip flopping the design, so maybe having the green at the top and bottom of the tail, and the really pretty "not black" peacock-y color to be the main body of the tail... but I don't want to scrap my entire design! Those sequins are soooo pretty, though.

I think it would be beautiful as is, with the 'black peacock' sequins top and bottom and the green in between. Those are lovely colors! Maybe try laying a bunch of them out, and see how it looks both ways?

Those are going to be gorgeous! Are you going to hand-sew them? Because gluing them could end rather badly. The iridescence is a coating and will eventually pull away from the sequins.
Maybe incorporate some of the peacock sequins up the sides, too?

Oh yeah, I am hand sewing them. I don't want to spend so much time on something only to have it fall apart after the first couple of uses! Do you think the coating on them might be an issue? I think I remember seeing someone's sequin tail where the sewn sequin and the coating separated, but didn't pull off completely because it was sewn. I am prepared for the upkeep of the tail, and I have all winter in cold, cold KY to finish it.

Ok, so I laid them out... and originally I thought I wanted the darker colors on the body, since they were so pretty, but I think Echinacea was right--- I think I like the way the one on the right looks, with the darker color at the top and bottom.
