View Full Version : Neoprene Glaucus atlanticus tail (aka Blue Sea Slug tail )
Ilyena

Hi Mers,
Just thought I'd start this for anyone who was interested. I'm making a neoprene tail (and top) to imitate the Blue Sea Slug and going to try and make the tail tentacles 3D by using vinyl tubing.
15011
15013
Already bought is the neoprene and a few other things, so while waiting for the paint I've started on a matching top (which in the pic is upside down..whoops)
15012
Once I finish the fluke design I'll post a pic...maybe (although I've posted a similar pic in the tail designs thread, it wasn't finalised then), but I need to put a zip in to get the monofin out and I have no idea since it has tentacles.
Hugs and fishes ^_^

Wow, fantastic and unique. Looks like you have the touch of a seamstress. What paints are you going to use? I am also working on some neoprene tails and so far my paint jobs have been total failures. Can't seem to find the right stuff...
I appreciate seeing inspiring work like yours...

^_^, thanks. I hope it works out how I'm planning, tried out the 3D part before on scrap fabric and it works pretty good, if it doesn't work on the neoprene then it'll be a wide fluke >_<.
.
I'm using Lumiere paint, by Jacquard and heat setting it after every layer, the test patches are holding up well in the water (be it only the shower but still). Aww that's so sweet :)

A couple of weeks ago, my beau and I were talking about how cool a glaucus atlanticus tail would be. I am so excited to see this come together :) Good luck!

I hope so Mizuko >_<, so far so good. I've drawn out the pattern, cut out the neoprene and tried it on, then had to re cut as it was a bit big in places.

Neoprene has been sewn together and velcro attached to the bottom 'tentacles' so I can get the monofin out. I was hoping to add a zip instead but there's no where to put one for the monofin XP. Now just waiting for the paint.

Youll look like a Pokemon :) the sea slug tail is such an awesome idea
Ilyena

Thanks ^_^. I can't see how I'll look like a pokemon?? but it's an amusing idea.
Awesome ideas don't always work out in real life... I somehow think this tail might not be as easy to swim in and more just for asthetics.

eeeee I love this!!!! I loooooove nudibranches, especially this one!! I've doodled designs based off it before but I've never seriously considered making one, so I'm glad you have!! Can't wait to see how this turns out :D I also love your top!!
Re: patterns making the butt look big... I know this wasn't a serious question, but actually, yes they all do! Because it's a measure of the circumfrence of the body, not the diameter/silhouette, tail patterns will always look MUCH curvier/more dramatic than your actually legs. Your legs aren't 2d, so the tail has to fit in not just the width of your body but the height, making the pattern look much larger than your body normally does lol. So never fear :)
Ilyena
10-12-2013, 07:27 PM

So I finally got the glue so I can stick the neoprene together before sewing, test patch it currently drying so I'll see how that goes before sticking the whole thing together. I bought a zip to hide between the dorsal so it can be easily removable, and that is about as far as I have been able to get with study and such. Though planning to move place soon so finishing may take a while longer :(.

And I still am going to do a zigzag stitch over the top, so I'm pretty sure the seems wont go anywhere...hopefully -fins crossed-

how much was your roll of neoprene...?
Ilyena
11-20-2013, 04:36 AM
I paid $200 (including postage)....but mind you I'm also making a wetsuit with what I bought and there may be enough for another tail, less elaborate though and it may have a couple extra seems.

You're all so creative!!
Nudibranches are among the prettiest sea creatures imo.
I probably would've tried to not only base the colours on it, but make the "tailbody" look like one too.
Crawling along the poolbottom could be a problem though xD
Ilyena
11-20-2013, 07:52 AM
I completely agree with you with the prettiest, they have such a diverse morphological range.
I sketched a few times with making the body look like one but it didn't seen right/not my thing, but it could be an idea for someone else, more Nudibranch tails the better XP.
Might not be a problem as this species floats up and down the water column...though the stares one might get lol

Might not be a problem as this species floats up and down the water column...though the stares one might get lol
Oh, I can do that!
In fact, I do that a lot when swimming xD
it's done with a synchro swimming technique, sculling.
Because I found so many gross and dangerous things in the pools I go to, I usually spend some time in the beginning of my swim just floating up and down just beneath the surface, checking the bottom AND watercolumn for things.
Funnily enough, I get a lot of aggravated stares (people probably think I do it only to watch them from below ),
unless I lie still on the poolbottom.
With one exception, no-one has ever bothered to check whether I might have drowned :p

For a tail, I'd just have to make one of my snaketail models, and add some needle-shaped fins on the sides (maybe with shelf-liner?).
Not sure about the big wings on top though.
Those would make swimming quite hard.
Anyway
15929
something like this would make a nice set!

I think they closed my pool once cause of something they found in the water...but usually its ok and adults don't look at me funny. Kids get a laugh as i swim under only to smile and wave while they frantically try and get another breath just to look under again. Life guards aren't doing their job >_<
I think that is why they float, cause those fins have no real function other than for directional and stability. That last picture looks pretty ^_^

UPDATE: after a slow painting start on the second half... I ran out of paint and won't be able to get more until the new year as I'm away till the 5th Jan :(. Any who, just a picture of the second side, only just started blending the central line. 16434
I learnt if you are going to paint the whole tail, to not buy coloured neoprene, and should have just stuck to white....takes up too much paint to cover the bright blue.

Erro all,
Little bit of an update, have finished more than the pictures I will be attaching, but thats all that is on my computer at the present time.
Making the fluke 3D is proving to be harder than first thought and for future all 3D tails I think shall be left to the silicone ones.
The 3D part im working on odd view

I would have preferred to only glue the tentacles but the have to be stitched also as the glue doesn't stick them together completely. But I can say the serrated like edges are to keep predators away XP
Edit: tried making the last one visible but it's duplicating itself and being annoying, sorry

Yayy...another set back...-pouts-
So, for the fluke to have the shape I want it has to be completely sealed, which means another zip has to be put in, and hope the fluke fits through it :/.
Other than that, there are a couple of tentacles which kink/not straight, which was unintentional but awesome XP

Woo..another set back :'( <-literally. The struggle between re-seaming the whole top half of the tail and leaving it because the seams when worn bend. It's hard to explain, bend in and out next to the body.... WAIT crappy paint picture to the rescue XP 19257
So yea, also have run out of glue using it all to smooth areas, probably shouldn't have done that until I tried it on again. Any ideas on how to fix it rather than cutting my nice seams??
Mermaid Dottie
03-18-2014, 12:02 AM
So, your seams wrinkle because it's too big? Have you thought about cutting a slit in back and adding a type of dorsal frill? Do you have a duct tape dummy of your legs? That might help you fit it when you do manage to adjust it.
Sent from my C6916 using Tapatalk
I've had that wrinkle problem before with my tails. All that needs to be done (in MY case) is just to try and re size and re sew the affected areas. You'll want to be careful not to do this too many times especially with neoprene because taking out the thread can and most likely will leave holes. It should be a fairly easy fix, however, seeing how wonderfully that top was sewn!
I just found this thread today (I was off the network for a looooooong time!) The tail is looking great! One of the best neoprene tails I've seen! I can wait to see how it is finished :)
Ilyena
05-16-2014, 12:46 AM
Hey Mers.
I apologise for those who wanted to see this finished, but I have been having a little trouble finding the motivation to finish this (very very low presently, due to circumstances at home), and have been working on a few other smaller un-related mer things. I will get it done...one day, but currently it is still on my floor taking up space :/. Though that poses another question...since I have found folding creates creases and makes lines in the paint (found those too on mine when i bend it to work on it), how does one store a neoprene tail without creating more permanent creases???
Azurin Luna
05-17-2014, 09:31 AM
I have neoprene tailes, and I hang mine on a hanger with a wide roll over which the tail is draped, it will still crease a little, but when I start swimming they disappear. I don't know about pained tails though, cause mine are not painted at all.
Mermaid Kelda

You could make one of those wall/standing hangers a lot of mers seem to use. MerMatt recently posted his here: http://mernetwork.com/index/showthread.php?8052-First-Silicone-Tail-Swim&p=127667&viewfull=1#post127667

Well....it's been a while and a long journey to get this tail finished. Between getting frustrated with it and almost giving up. Blood, sweat and tears have shed. It's in its final stages of coating with a thing layer of silicone cause of all of the paint work, I don't fancy it to rub off anytime soon. The silicone has made it a bit more textured and like it's still wet. Photoshoot with a good friend of mine in the next couple of days. but a sneak peak of the dorsal area for tonight ^_^

How cute!! It reminds me of the Pokemon Lugia...I wonder if it was based off of the same sea slug? o:
Pardon my nerd moment.
"Lugia's tendency for being underwater resembles plesiosaurs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/plesiosauria). It is also possible that Lugia is based on Ryūjin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ry%C5%ABjin), a dragon who lived on the ocean floor and was the Shinto god of the sea. The two have similarities in mythology, and Lugia's Shiny colors (red and white) are the same colors as the coral Ryujin's palace (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ry%C5%ABg%C5%AB-j%C5%8D) was made of. The beluga whale (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/beluga_whale), a white whale with a similar body shape and coloration to Lugia, may also be a basis for Lugia's design and name. Lugia's back fins and tail spikes are reminiscent of the Stegosaurus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stegosaurus)."

But I hope it can swim, with the pipes inside the fluke, I'm not entirely sure, might be more of a dry/shore line tail.

Whoop, well back from holidays and tried taking my tail for its maiden voyage. I need weights as its really buoyant, especially the fluke and how much air the tubes hold if i don't submerge it completely/get the air out. Missed a few parts with the silicone and noticed the paint peeling, that part is fixed now, but a new zipper needs to be put in as part of the teeth part came away from the fabric it was attached to. Fluke is soo heavy to lift one it's full of water (see image below). It's hard to swim in, especially in the shallows, wasn't game to go deep where we went as it's a known reef that has sharks. Fluke doesn't bend much due to the pipes but I'll get used if I could move my body more. Though as this slug floats in the water column...who needs to swim lol. But I love it, just got to get used to moving in it and how it's more restrictive. Gah so happy its done (besides the zip) ^_^
Now for those who read my boring rant, here is a couple of pictures as a reward :P Though please ignore my weird facial expressions, dad isn't the best photographer and was just clicking the big button and it was really sunny >_<

Echidna: Thank you ^_^. This slug eats poisonous jellyfish and stores the poison in the tentacle things and ultimately concentrates it, therefore being more poisonous that what it ate XP.

How well does it propel you through the water?

Not quite sure as I have only recently gotten the weights to use with it and it was only shallow there. But it went quite nicely along the surface, it is more of a cruising, slow movement tail :)

^^heh, I think most tails are more cruising, slow movement, whatever they're made of xD
A speeding tail would have to look very different from the usual, pretty fancy tails with fins and stuff.
...and now I've got ideas.

Yay ideas. But yes pretty tails are more slow and graceful than built for speed :)

What a fabulous tail, Ilyena! Well done.
Ilyena,
This is a beautiful tail!! I am so inspired and really need to start on my tail! I have had my neoprene for almost a year and just have been lacking inspiration! But your tail is fantastic!! How did you seal the paint with the silicone? was it painted on? Great work! Hope you can swim better in it soon!!!

Hey Koti ^_^, This tail took a year for me to do lol, though maybe a month if I had worked on it more often.
The silicone was thinned down with terpentine till it was like pancake batter then painted on...though, I got frustrated with the brushes losing bristles and gumming up that I just used my fingers and the silicone leveled itself out mostly. A couple of areas needed a second coat as a batch I made was a little too runny :P

This tail is incredible! Great job!
Wow! that looks epic and amazing, love the colours and the fins. :D

Well it was about time I swam properly in this monstrosity. Video to come from the Adelaide Mer-meet, which shows swimming and attempting to flip.

I had 2kg of weight on me, but I need ankle weights as the fluke is buoyant as well a buoy, and it took much of my energy to try and stay down so I wasn't able to stay under the water as long. Oh well. Few problems with it now but can't do much with it as this tail was a learning curve.

Thank you!!! <3
Here's the video from the days swim. Was an effort to swim in it. Should have gotten the video of putting it on, that was funny :P

You may have to adjust the quality setting.

The fluke looks really nice in the water :) Not too flowy, not too still
Ilyena

Thank you ^_^, it's surprisingly flowy considering the plumbing in the fluke lol.

Whoop, well back from holidays and tried taking my tail for its maiden voyage. I need weights as its really buoyant, especially the fluke and how much air the tubes hold if i don't submerge it completely/get the air out.

Just saw this thread, haven't read all of it yet, but was thinking... those tubes in the fluke and your issue of them filling with air/water... if you ever try that again, try some silicone sealant inside the tubes, should be able to pump it in with a syringe. That would avoid air or water getting inside of them and keep them somewhat lightweight at the same time. :) Great tail. You've given me some new ideas for fin rays in my fluke. Thanks!
Ilyena

I thought of that, but it would be way thicker than any silicone fluke out there since its almost 3-4cm thick on the thickest tubes. I can open the fluke to get the monofin out so its not entirely closed off, just needs more drainage (fault on my behalf for using too much glue).
Thank you. Glad it has helped in someways and people can learn from the problems this method involves

I am considering using boning for fin rays in my fluke... lightweight, flexible, and solid, though I can see it wouldn't give the dimensions you used for yours, I think the effect will be similar. I have already decided to line the outer edges with it so that it holds shape out of water. (spandex tail)

Great idea ^_^, wish you luck in making it and can't wait too see

Cool! I had been considering a glaucus atlanticus tail for a while but if you're already doing one I don't want to copy you. Back to the drawing board I guess, any suggestions? I like blues and blue/greens but I can't seem to find any mer worthy fish to use and not clash with my friend (who is doing a mother of pearl themed tail.

I can't speak directly for Ilyena, but a lot of mers are inspired by the same fish/animal/color, etc. Even though there are a lot of tails out there inspired by say, large mouth bass, they are all uniquely different looking. I think as long as you make your idea for having a galaucus atlanticus tail different looking from Ilyena's it will be fine. Also, nothing says you have to limit your inspiration to just one sea creature. You could do a mix between the galaucus atalanticus and a betta fish, or something like that.
Once you know your inspiration I find it helps to sketch a lot of tail designs. Eventually you will come up with a design that you love that will be uniquely you! ;)

Exactly what Alea said. I'm not the only one who has made/been inspired by the nudibranch, and certainly won't be the last. I know I'm going to be creating a neoprene tail base for someone else who has a completely different take on the blue sea slug and wants to paint their own. But every one i have seen, even though they're inspired and based on the same animal, they're all different.

Echidna: Thank you, I loved it and was soo happy when it was done. I have only swam in it twice and worn it to a dry event once. I did soo many errors I don't think I can wear it again though (dry event only), without taking the whole thing apart and redoing it, swimming with it is a great effort and won't be done again.
Thank you Lindsay!

That's sad to hear, as it looks so lovely underwater.
But I have my share of pretty tails that are hassle to swim in, I eventually decided to favour efficiency over beauty, at least for swimming.
Ilyena

I'm sure I can still use it as a dry event tail once I have the time to fix it. I have other tails till the :)
