I'm thinking about making a single large, stand-up dorsal fin to wear with my orca/shark tail.

I know there have been quite a few threads regarding this,
usually discussing how to add a dorsal fin or ridge to a tail.
There were suggestions to use corset bones to make it stand upright.

Has anyone ever made one successfully?
I probably wouldn't attach it to the tail, but put on a belt instead.

I found this
15040

it's pretty close to what I have in mind, but it's meant as a swimhelper, which means it's very buoyant, and it's designed for children 3 years upward, meaning it's far too small for me to use.

Any ideas?

Maybe you could use that one but put little bitty holes in it so it wouldn't float? It looks plastic, but if it's styrofoam your out of luck. You could use something like that jelly stuff, that they use to make dummies on Myth busters? I can't remember what it's called. But it would probably hold the form really well.

I've seen those! A little boy at a hotel I was staying at LOVED his so much and it was pretty cute although it seemed a bit dangerous to me for such a young kid--putting them in the position with their face down. =\

I'd say to follow that design exactly depending on where you want it. There's a latex tail someone has that was originally done by Fish Butts, can't recall her username, with an epic dorsal going down the back.

Mermaasai I just remembered.

That stuff is called ballistic gel, and it would deteriorate quickly in water.

One could be made from silicone with a plastic or resin structure inside to make it stand, with slots to accommodate a belt, or if you want, you could adhere it to either a silicone or fabric tail with more silicone.
